That's bullshit. People like sports because of the excitement and drama. Has nothing to do with attention span or intelligence. It's entertainment. Unfortunately, longer seasons mean that players conserve energy during portions of the games or portions of the seasons.

I like the NBA, particularly in recent years with the revival or some classic rivalries and the number of stars that are in the league. The stars and the rivalries make for more drama and excitement. The simple fact is that the quality of the NBA games could still be increased ten fold if they shortened the season to 40-50 games.

I also love watching offenses that are 95% ISO and LOVE the fact there are illegal defensive schemes. it's only made better by the fact the two biggest stars are a rapist and a traitor. and the fact most fans can't be bothered to cheer unless prompted by a fucking organist/PA announcer just makes it fucking ELECTRIC!

the NBA can suck the fattest cock there is"

Ah yes...the good old days of the NBA...the heyday that was the 80s and 90s...we didn't have to worry about players like Kobe and Lebron running isolation plays 95% of the time

We had to worry about guys like Jordan and Drexler and Isaiah running iso plays 95% of the time

Revisionist history is awesome

I yearn for the olden days of NBA basketball where they actually played defense! Thats why an average final score in the 80s would be 134-127

Weird I know but true. Jimmy had it on in his room and for some odd reason i sat in there watching the game with him drinking beer on his fancy new HDTV.

Well maybe so

I just think its kind of shortsighted to rule out ever watching a particular sports league again based on one incident

that was halfway sarcastic. If anything it added entertainment value to have me watch again haha.

^ agree, my interest in NBA probably went down the most when the Hornets left. Fuck the bobcats. Sounds like the name of a middle school team, and tell me there is not anything ego centrist related when the original owner was named Bob.

i hope theres also some sarcasm in that comment, if you refuse to give a team a chance based on the fact that the guy who paid $300 million for it decided to name it what he wanted...let alone he doesnt even own the team anymore

although i definitely agree that they're not the hornets and i'll never feel the same way about the bobcats as i used to about the hornets

nahh the name thing does not factor into my decision. I do think it's cool #23 is the owner.
Just that by the time the bobcats came along, I no longer was living in Charlotte so its not like I am going to bob cat games a few times a year. Plus i just don't care about the NBA.

I suppose if i really had to pick a favorite team i would pull one for the home team in char-town.

this is a bad yr for the nfl and the talent level is peaking in the nba (especially at point guard, wow) but I still wouldn't say the nba is more interesting, maybe if they'd shorten the nba season like I've always wanted them to

i completely agree

well first of all lebron is bucking this trend by actually being a team player, more assists than jordan or kobe, secondly jordan probably passed moderately more than kobe but he was a much more efficient player which made him more exciting, usually he did a much better job of getting to the basket, the problem with kobe is that he doesn't just do iso but he just runs to a spot and just tries to shoot over people, it's boring in my opinion unless he catches fire

which is why I never understood people jumping on the spurs for being boring (manu and parker made many more aggressive moves than kobe did, granted they aren't as talented) when the lakers were never much more exciting, especially with all the unathletic guys like fisher in their lineups

This is when I realized that Nym410, along with this thread, are 100% fucking retarded.

I'm not here to hate on the NBA or any other sport, but you think that is why football is popular? The short season caters to dumb America?

Tell me, are you a happy person? Or is the whole "ignorance is bliss" thing a lie?

^^ partly, yes. And I amended that statement (that I guess you ignored) to "short attention span" and I stand by that statement. Also because it is quite easy to gamble on and is the most straightforward fantasy sport.

I love the NFL, but I don't think it's the end all, be all of professional sports.

And, I'm a very happy person. Anyone who has ever met me can attest to that. Do I come across as angry on the internet or something?

(and I completely DISAGREE with shortening the NBA season. there is a reason these sports have longer seasons.)

No, just ignorant.

The short attention span keeps people interested, although basketball is more fast paced and the games are shorter? Football is strategic and deliberate (much more than basketball) but caters to those with short attention spans in a way that basketball doesn't?

Also, you do know there is fantasy basketball, right? And how is it easier to gamble on than basketball?

I respect and understand nym's viewpoint, I guess there's something to say for a marathon season where all the stats get drawn out but it just has the opposite effect for me, I don't feel the fans can get any momentum about each matchup with so many of them, I guess if you're more of a baseball guy you like the long seasons, I was kind of raised on college sports

I disagree, football games can easily drag out to 4 hours. Quarters may go by without a score. There is also plenty of time where not shit is going on. A lot more attention is required to understand what is going on in football versus watching 5 players run back forth dunking the ball every 40 seconds.

We've already established that there is a line between those who believe the NBA is more interesting, and those who believe the NFL is more interesting.

However, I propose that we add a second line for those who believe the NFL is more interesting. The two sides would be:

A. Those who simply believe that the NFL is truly the better sport for reasons marked in terms of excitement, rivalries, season length, etc.

B. Those who are surprised that anyone can consider the NBA tolerable to watch and find it only slightly less fixed than your typical WWE match.

----

I'm going with B.

If anybody says that NBA defense isn't world class or that college teams play better team defense I just assume they haven't watched a game in a decade...

But anyway, I can respect you guys don't like the NBA. To each his own...

The thing is, players in the NBA are just so good offensively, that sometimes its hard to tell how good the defense is

On the other hand, in college ball, so many of the players are so bad offensively, that they turn the ball over because they suck, and thats confused as being good defense

I really don't get why people like the NBA better than NCAA ball, unless they are just in awe of the talent of individual players. I've always thought of basketball being the ultimate team sport, so watching Kobe or LeBron throw up 40 pts a game isn't that exciting to me. I also get sick of seeing the same damn teams in the playoffs every year. If you're a fan of the Spurs, Lakers, or Celtics I can see why it would be exciting, knowing that your team has a good shot winning another title. Otherwise, I think NCAA games are far more exciting- even if the basketball being played isn't phenomenal.

March Madness is by, far, the most exciting post-season of any sport. The BCS is a total joke, NFL playoffs are completely hit-or-miss, and NBA playoffs go on for wayyyyy too long.

That's a perfectly legitimate argument, as opposed to the common refrains of people hating the NBA because they don't play defense, they make too much money, or they don't give 100% effort.

i must admit, when i made this thread it was based on some nba story lines that i was excited about, namely miami heat, lakers, and celtics and some young players

but after watching my 1st nba game, i must retract my endorsement of the entire league play and focus my endorsement to the nba playoffs

nba playoffs are more interesting that nfl playoffs

I am always most hooked on the NHL playoffs... Which is odd because that is my least favorite pro league...

Anyway after pondering this thread my position is this: the NFL is best in terms of pure entertainment value, but that alone doesn't do it for me. I love the statistical side of sports like bball and baseball and that only is made relevant over the longer season and larger sample.. Proceed to calling me a nerd..
