I'm pretty good about getting to bed around 11:00pm during the week. I wake up at 6:00am on weekdays. 7 hours is usually more than enough.

Though, I have trouble sleeping.... always have my entire life (it's hard to actually fall asleep, I sleep lightly, and I wake up really easily). All in all, I'd say that I actually get around 6 hours of sleep a night, and it works for me.

"^ Sleep disorder? you should get a sleep study done"

I had one in February.. diagnosed with hypersomnia but they can't rule out narcolepsy.

So now I have this attitude of, "why bother?" I'm going to feel tired regardless so why waste the time?

it costs thousands of dollars and you have to be referred

just saying.. your insurance will say "yeah, fuck you buddy" if you don't have a reason... but if you do, just ask your doctor for a referral to a sleep center.

Has anybody tried those smartphone apps like Sleep Cycle for Iphone or 'Sleep as an Droid' for android?

You sit the phone on the bed with you and it plots out the vibrations over the night so you can tell how much tossing and turning went on vs how often you were sleeping like a stone.

had a rough week last week getting up...had to get the roomate to wake me up several times.

thinking of getting a surround system for the room to hook my ipod up to when it comes on to wake me up. nice and loud through the room.

I try to be in bed around 11 and usually have to read or watch tv before I go to sleep.
Keeping things consistent - there's family guy in the background at 11PM that makes me chuckle while I'm reading and I know that if robot chicken comes on it's getting late
If I just turn out the lights and try to sleep, I will be awake for hours worrying about stuff.
I will have awful nightmares that keep me from sleeping.

I notice that I sleep better taking magnesium about an hour before I go to bed. Gives me a bit of cotton mouth, but definitely helpful. Melatonin did not do jack shit for me.

Wow. Looking at the Sleep Cycle app reviews on the iPhone. It has over 700 reviews and a 4.5 stars rating. Its only .99, worth a shot to see how it does.

On weeknights I usually go to bed between 11:30-12:30 and get up at 7am, though every once in a while if I'm out at a bar late bump that time up to 1:30-2am. Oddly enough I can't tell much of a difference by getting that extra 2 hours of sleep. Unfortunately I'm not a heavy sleeper and am often restless in bed. I also need it very dark in my room with no lights showing, a fan blowing on me that also makes white noise, and the cooler the better.

Additionally, no matter how tired I am I cannot get more than 8-9 hours of sleep. I'm not a morning person and on weekends even if I wake up at 6-7am I will stay in bed till 9-10 at the earliest. Oddly enough I think I get some of my highest quality sleep between 6-10am but unfortunately I can only do that on the weekends.

Regardless of how much sleep I get at night (could be 6, could be 8 hrs) I still find that if I'm doing something boring at work I have a tendency to get very sleepy. In a nutshell I think my sleeping behavior is horrible but I'm not sure what can help it.

There's also the Sleep as Android app for Android users (derp) that does the same thing and is free. It will track your bed movement and wake you up at the most opportune time.

You can pay to upgrade it but I don't know what that does.

samwise have you looked into provigil or nuvigil? It is meant to make you feel more alert during the day especially if u have narcolepsy also you can still go to sleep after taking it.

^ Yeah, I have been on Provigil since February (with Ritalin on my really rough days or when I make long drives). I'm on 300-400 mg right now so I'm hoping I can decrease it soon since I'm out of that f'ing apartment..

TKE, I would talk to someone about that. One of my biggest cues was falling asleep very easily during boring tasks..

Also, check out the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (that goes for anyone). I know it seems silly but they use it constantly...

I'm not sure what this sleep thing you speak of is.

Maybe I'll revisit this thread after my son isn't waking me up 6 times night. I did get 4 contiguous hours last night though. yay!

^^^damn, i got an 11

i get pretty sleepy in certain situations, no matter how much sleep i get. meetings at work are the worse. if i'm not really involved in the meeting and i'm just kinda listening, i can't stay awake. also have a hard time staying awake when driving long distances alone. reading something for more than about 20 mins will undoubtedly put me to sleep.

it didn't start until high school, where i was bored out of my mind and would sleep to pass the time faster. eventually, it got to the point that i couldn't stay awake even if i tried. continued right into college and now i can't sit at my desk at work for too long or i'll fall asleep.

Yeah, might want to talk to someone... I went from a 23 prior to treatment to about a 15 on average (if that makes sense)

There are lots of different things that could be making you sleepy besides things like hypersomnia or narcolepsy - one thing they test for is the way you breath at night (sleep apnea) and also how much you move/wake up during the night. You might not realize your body is waking up constantly.

a CPAP machine?

the only thing that sucks about a sleep study is the amount of shit they put on you... I kept thinking how horrible it would be if you have any trouble falling asleep - there were more than 30 wires on my head iirc, then probably close to 20 on other points of the body (including this weird belt)... and they stick something up your nose and have this thing hanging down in front of your mouth (that's mainly to test for sleep apnea)

Night 2. I didn't sleep well at all last night. One thing this app doesn't pick up on is if you wake up while being completely still. I woke up at least twice last night laying on my back and didn't move. Once was around 3am and it didn't register.

^ Thanks, hopefully you haven't resurrected it just so I can kill it again

I actually put myself on a polyphasic (really more biphasic in my case) sleep cycle after my last final this semester so I could work around the clock on the write up for my undergraduate research. Basically I started at 12pm on Saturday worked on both the powerpoint and paper till my presentation on Tuesday then finished up the paper by 12pm Yesterday. After that I actually wrote another paper that was the final for a different class last night (after that research paper it was a cinch).

I have to say that this has been one of the most successful experiments I have tried for increasing my productivity. I was basically sleeping 6-8 hours a day in 3-4 hour increments. However by late Tuesday into yesterday, I could really feel myself really starting to get into the swing of things. My last few "naps" were without an alarm clock (I was just sleeping till I woke up) and were decreasing in time with the final one being only 2.5 hours. I could lay down sleep for a few hours and wake feeling pretty well rested, head to the library, work for 4-6 hours, and then go get some more sleep. My energy levels and focus were greatly increased as well. I bought an amp on Saturday in case I need some help waking up or getting focused and never drank it.

Now I have to get back to some semblance or normalcy so can work 8-5

In bed around midnight and up at 7:30 M-F. It never feels like enough.
Try to catch up on sleep with a 9-9.5 hour night either Saturday or Sunday.

When I'm working out a lot I try to get 8.5 every night. I'll really suffer for it after a few days if I don't get at least 7-8 hours.

From what I can tell I'd naturally sleep 8.5-9 hours given the opportunity. Life tends to get in the way and cut that down to about 7 average.

No caffeine past 7:00, no TV in bedroom.

I work rotating shift (3,2,1) and on call 4 days a week. Sleeping really hasn't been a problem so far but no kids, or anything. The only problem I run into is when I'm on 3rd shift off days it can be difficult to fall asleep at a normal time and I end up on the couch till 4am.

I get at least 8 hours a night, even if that means I go to bed at 8

My GF picks on me because I have a pillow fetish. I have a "sleepy" and a "huggy". I sleep on 1 and hug the other one. As soon as she gets out of the bed I hoard her pillows and surround myself with them.

I may be weird.

I hate going to bed early. Late night is the only time I get for myself really. But I'm tired all the time. Like "microsleeping while sitting in traffic" tired sometimes.

Damned kids won't let me sleep in on the weekends yet. Can't wait till they're old enough to go pour themselves a bowl of cereal and watch cartoons.
