Thank you Fuchsia for your sincere answer. I know it makes a good story of innocent fragility trampled by callous manipulation, but I don't think it quite covers it. People choose their lovers. Presumably they started with some sense of strength and self-determined will. If there never was, then it wasn't the men that created the problem. You would think that being desired would give someone a certain confidence and a certain willingness not to put up with that bullshit. Blaming someone else is rarely the answer, although I understand how others can help to bring people down.

I'm not making up some kind of "story" or trying to blame someone specifically. I do, however, think it's ridiculous that you expect that a teenage girl (no matter how pretty) should have "a certain confidence" and a "self-determined will". It's a fragile time and I can definitely see how people get into a cycle of getting taken advantage of. And while women can choose lovers, it doesn't mean they always choose wisely or know what they're getting into before it's too late. Even if they get out of one abusive relationship, the cycle of going for the same kind of guys may continue.

I'm describing some cases I've seen, I'm not trying to group all pretty women with emotional problems into one category (because who knows how many have been raped, treated poorly as children, all kinds of other issues, etc).

My main point here is that a woman's prettiness doesn't say anything about her confidence, maturity or resiliency. So that's why I'm confused as to how you're baffled at this. I mean, a lot of people ask why women in abusive relationships don't wise up and rescue themselves: if you're under threat of physical harm or death, it's not really that easy.
