My favorites so far are Inception and The Social Network. Below those would be Shutter Island, Toy Story 3, and The Town. I'm still gonna check out True Grit, The Fighter, and King's Speech. 1/9/2011 5:14:46 PM |

black swan is my favorite that i've seen so far!! also liked inception. the town was ok and def way better than i thought it was going to be, but probably not THE best of the year...or even in the top 5. a good, solid, enjoyable watch but i can't put it in the same category as something like black swan. i only mention it because i'm way behind on films and haven't seen all i need to see (i just saw inception like a week ago ahaha)
is 127 hours not playing anymore in the triangle area?
i think i'm going to see the king's speech tom night either @ galaxy or rialto. i like galaxy better but rialto is more convenient location wise. decisions decisions.
oh p.s. i also loved how to train your dragon. that movie was SO good and the black fury was soooo cute!
p.p.s. i also thought shutter island was one of the worst (plot-wise), most predictable movies i've ever seen. ever. but that is just me.

Exit Through the Gift Shop was the most entertaining, idea filled movie I saw. I'd recommend it before anything else released this year.
After that, its (in whatever order):
Hot Tub Time Machine- funniest movie of the year; best "dumb-comedy" in years I Am Comic- great if you're a comedy nerd Jackass 3D- genius Life During Wartime- there's a kid who got molested that is hysterical Please Give- I don't know if Catherine Keener has ever looked less attractive, or Amanda Peet more hot Solitary Man- Michael Douglas kills it, he puts up a Meryl Streep-level performance The American- "I prefer the films that put their audience to sleep in the theater." The Tillman Story- the gov't remains scheming liars

I liked Inception and the town. But definitely some good ones this year compared to 09 (minus the whole avatar crap). 1/9/2011 10:58:17 PM |

I'm looking forward to seeing this.
I feel out of touch with the "Galaxy" type of movie ever since I left.1/9/2011 11:06:34 PM |

exit through the gift shop is on TWC on-demand as well. I watched it on netflix a week or two ago. It's pretty good. I certainly wouldn't put it in the best movie of the year category though. but pretty interesting. particularly so if you're already familiar with the artists involved. 1/10/2011 6:07:29 PM |

Inception, for me.
Black Swan was pretty good. Still haven't seen True Grit, Scott Pilgrim, and some of the others mentioned in this thread.
I started Restrepo the other day, but fell asleep. Nothing to do with the movie, though, I was just insanely tired. I am definitely watching that again soon. 1/13/2011 5:59:39 PM |

As much as I enjoyed Inception, the Fighter, and Social Network, A Prophet has to be the best movie I saw last year. If you like foreign flicks, check this one out. 1/13/2011 8:48:46 PM |

^ Yeah, A Prophet was pretty brilliant. However, it was released in 2009, not 2010. It was one of the nominees for Best Foreign Language Film in the 82nd Academy Awards, which honored films made in 2009.

God, I really did not enjoy Please Give. I felt like it was a weird justification of materialism and beyond that, the film was just sloppy IMO. Wasn't into it.

I just watched Animal Kingdom and HOLY FUCK that is a great flick, best of the year as far as I'm concerned. It was everything I hoped Winter's Bone would be and more. Jackie Weaver is absolutely fantastic and deserving of her Oscar nod. 1/26/2011 2:14:15 AM |

It probably goes in order of (although after the top 2, a lot of them are interchangeable):
The Kings Speech Black Swan The Social Network True Grit 127 Hours Inception The Fighter
And out of just sheer enjoyment, I would probably put this at 3, How to Train Your Dragon. That movie was awesome. 1/26/2011 8:56:11 AM |

Still need to see The King's Speech, Animal Kingdom,Blue Valentine, Biutiful, and The Kids Are All Right. Right now, though, for me:
1)Winter's Bone 2)The Social Network 3)Black Swan (note: the above three are really tight and are far and away my three favs of the year) 4)127 Hours 5)The Fighter

Just out of curiosity, what was your issue with Winter's Bone? I need to see Animal Kingdom.

I didn't have an issue with it per se, just felt like it was another in the long list of good but not great films that came out this year. It never sucked me into the story like I thought it would. It might be an issue of unrealistic expectations though, where it was never going to live up to the hype surrounding it.1/26/2011 12:01:49 PM |

I hate the people who hate Inception just because they didn't like it as much as everyone else. Say it was overrated, fine, but to call it a terrible movie is just asinine.

Just saw The Town.. man what a shit movie.. all the characters sucked.. sunny days make me sad.. really?
Best so far are True Grit, The Fighter, and The Social Network. 1/27/2011 1:27:51 PM |

^^^ the fact that they didn't even try to explain the technology is why I was able to "buy in." If they had tried to explain it realistically at all, it would have been too much BS. But they basically just said "here's this thing we made, it works, onto the actual story." 1/27/2011 4:46:43 PM |

finally saw the social network and winter's bone. both were great. i LOVED winter's bone. almost as much as black swan. the social network was obviously great, but i knew that going into it so i wasn't AS wowed just because my expectations were already super high...kinda hard to avoid the buzz surrounding that one. still fantastic, though. winter's bone was awesome.
i really would like to see the king's speech and blue valentine and 127 hours before the oscars. dunno if it'll happen though. blue valentine is playing at 7:10 at the colony tomorrow so i might go to that if i have time.
right now i'd have to say black swan and winter's bone are my favorite so far. honorable mentions: inception and how to train your dragon. 2/8/2011 12:19:50 AM |
