Quote :
"Tennessee coach Derek Dooley had been optimistic all along, but now it's official: Junior safety Janzen Jackson has re-enrolled for the second session of summer school, paving the way for his return to the football field this fall.

Jackson has been dealing with personal issues and withdrew from school during the spring semester. He didn't participate in spring practice, but stayed in Knoxville and got a job. Dooley has been extremely patient with Jackson and left the door open the entire time. The second-year Tennessee coach said the reason he went out of his way to help Jackson was because Jackson has been committed to helping himself.

Of course, it doesn't hurt that Jackson is a key component on defense. He's the kind of safety that makes everyone around him better and is a big-time hitter.

The Vols have some potential in the secondary, and getting Jackson back will help to solidify things back there. Junior Prentiss Waggner, a second-team All-SEC selection last season, can play both cornerback and safety, while sophomore safety Brent Brewer just started to scratch the surface of how good he can be last season after playing four years of minor league baseball.

Tennessee also brought in a pair of heralded junior college defensive backs -- Byron Moore and Izauea Lanier. Moore, who spent a season at USC before transferring to Los Angeles Harbor Community College, will compete for a starting cornerback job right away.

Jackson, though, is the one who makes it all go back there, which is why this will be a huge fall camp for him and the Vols' defense. He's been working out on his own, but he hasn't had any contact since the bowl game last December.

The other factor to consider is his emotional state. He's run into several issues off the field during his career, and this is his final chance to show that he's matured.

Tennessee's defense will be looking for playmakers and leaders this fall. The Vols need Jackson to be both."

I hope he got his head right... last thing this program needs is any more distractions and second guessing of Dooley's decision to allow his return

that being said, I look forward to some bone crushing hits out of our back field this season!

the way they make it sound it was almost Dooley's suggestion for him to take some time off... I have no idea what the issue was/is but Dooley is pretty hardcore about shit like this so for him to give his blessing for JJ to take the summer off basically it must have been something big. I dont know if its family health issues, got a girl knocked up, or what.

Quote :
"A few months ago, GVX247 co-worker Ryan Callahan and I packed into my car and traveled around the in the South — mostly in the South, but a few other spots — and spoke with some of the region’s top prospects.

Tennessee wide receiver commitment Drae Bowles of Jackson (Tenn) Christian School
We followed the path of Tennessee’s annual Big Orange Caravan and decided to start our own tradition: The GVX247 Recruiting Caravan.

Shockingly, we didn’t strangle each other during the journey.

Ryan and I have been great friends for years despite agreeing with each other approximately 2 percent of the time. We both love to argue, but that’s not why we disagree. We disagree because we legitimately view so many things differently, and we both tend to get annoyingly arrogant with our opinions — the difference being I always admit I’m a bullheaded, and he never will. He’s one of the best people I know, but he’s too stubborn to admit he’s stubborn.

I’m a Cubs fan and Ryan is a Cardinals fan, and that tends to become our dominant debate, but are disagreements don’t stop with sports. Politics, music, barbecue restaurants, ice cream flavors ... it’s never personal, but we disagree about everything. All the time. We both love sports and good-looking women and hate terrorists. We disagree about practically everything else.

But when Ryan and I walked out of Jackson (Tenn.) Christian School toward the end of our trip, I made a bold comment that even he couldn’t debate. He probably tried, but he couldn’t.

“Wow. That’s a great kid, and a great-looking athlete,” I told Ryan. “That’s (Derek) Dooley’s kind of kid. He’s going to want him bad.”

That “great kid” was Drae Bowles, considered one of the nation’s top wide receiver prospects and the second-best prospect in Tennessee, according to 247Sports.

Perhaps Ryan was exhausted after spending way too much time with me in consistently confined places, but he just nodded and said, “Yeah.”

Vols football coach Derek Dooley
Not his typical, “Yeah, but...”

Just, “Yeah.”

Admittedly, the sample size was small — a few phone conversations and one face-to-face interview — and I don’t speak with nearly as many prospects as Ryan does on a daily basis, but there’s no question that Bowles has been my favorite kid to deal with in this class.

Dooley and his staff have recruited several likable kids the past two-plus years — trust me, it hasn’t always been that way around here — but Bowles would stand out in any class.

For starters, this isn’t a charity. Nice kids don’t always make nice players, at least not at this level, but Bowles definitely passes the SEC eyeball test. He’s one of the more physically impressive high school wide receiver prospects I’ve seen. He looks more like a linebacker than a wide receiver, but he runs like a wide receiver. But even that great first impression wasn’t nearly as impressive as the following hour.

Bowles, the oldest son of Madison County Sheriff’s Office Captain Dexter Bowles, is polite and honest. He looks you directly in the eyes and says, “Yes, sir.” When he speaks about the full college experience — not just football — you believe him. He’s confident, but he isn’t cocky. He doesn’t think he knows everything. He’s a humble kid who puts things in their proper perspective: Faith, Family, Football. In that order.

I can’t think of a higher compliment to give a young man than the standard, “I’d be happy if he showed up to take my sister or my future daughter to the prom.” That’s exactly the feeling I had after our lengthy conversation. This seemed like the kind of kid you’d want a female family member to marry.

“My dad has always taught me and my brother to carry yourself in very (mannerly) way,” Bowles said that afternoon. “I’ve just learned that trait growing up.”

The only problem at that point was the past — not Bowles’ past, but my past in this business.

If I hadn’t been fooled on several previous occasions, I would have been sold right then and there. Unfortunately, though, some kids quickly learn how to carry themselves differently in the presence of adults, and I’ve read more than one arrest report while thinking, “I never saw this one coming.”

When Bowles left the room, Ryan and I turned off our recorders for typical small-talk with a player’s coach while watching highlight films. Standard stuff in this business. The only thing that stood out this time was JCS coach Matt Underwood — a young man who also leaves a good first impression, despite his beard being the only thing that distinguishes him as a non-player — making sure we paid attention to the clip of Bowles punishing defensive backs as a run-blocker.

Usually we watch touchdown after touchdown.

Not this time.

“This one’s my favorite ... wait for it ... wait for it ... boom, baby!” Underwood said while watching a clip of Bowles absolutely annihilating some helpless-looking cornerback into the turf.

Underwood then rewound and re-watched the play a few times.

“I love this stuff,” he said. “Kid’s just a football player.”

Before finally moving onto the next play, Underwood had one more thing to show us about his favorite run-blocking clip.

As soon as the whistle blew the play dead, Bowles helped the defender to his feet and patted him on the back. He then jogged back to his outside linebacker position as if nothing had happened.

This kid seemed too good to be true, so I had to ask Underwood a simple question.

“Is Drae really that good of a kid?”

Most coaches, especially when you turn off your recorder, will at least be fairly honest with questions like that. They’ll tell you if a kid is disingenuous or a tad rough around the edges, or if he’s just a normal kid who means well but occasionally finds mischief.

Underwood didn’t flinch.

“Absolutely,” the coach replied. “What you see is what you get. He’s always like that.”

Underwood told us Bowles constantly texts him inspirational bible verses — about one per day on average, but sometimes a little more or less. How do we know the average? Underwood showed us his phone. There was a large bank of Bowles’ texts, and a quick glimpse showed a surplus of faith-related messages.

“He’s just a great kid,” Underwood said. “Everybody around here loves him.”

UT fans will probably feel the same way.

The challenges Dooley inherited with the Tennessee program in January 2010 are well-documented, and they are not debatable. He was the Vols’ third head coach in three years. His roster was depleted to a hardly-manageable level in some spots, and a handful of the players — including some of his best players — had serious issues off the field.

It was anything but overnight-fixable. It was, as Dooley’s former boss Nick Saban said several times while rebuilding Alabama, a “process.”

Bowles is the latest in a lengthening line of players who could expedite that process.

I don’t pretend to know how well some of Dooley’s prospects will fare on the field — no one needs a reminder of how ridiculous the SEC is on annual basis — but I do know that UT’s new coach is trying to rebuild a proud program on a foundation of character. And I respect that. His 2011 signing class had higher than a 3.0 core high school GPA and higher than a 20 average ACT score, and a vast majority of them were pleasant to deal with during the recruiting process. That trend has continued with his four-and-counting Class of 2012.

Dooley’s Vols will have their struggles, on and off the field. Everyone does. As former UT coach Phillip Fulmer was fond of saying, you can’t put more than 100 college-aged males together anywhere in the world and expect everything to be easy. Problems are inevitable, but recruiting good athletes with good grades and good character references should help the situation.

Kids like Drae Bowles — a great prospect and a seemingly great person — could really help the situation"

got two more over the last few days:

Aiden Hill, a RB from Ohio (interesting, we get a few from there, like Ben Martin who was a 5-star, but not many... wonder if this is due to Ohio State's issues)

and

Nathan Peterman (haha, Peterman) a QB from Jacksonville, FL who I don't know shit about and probably will never see the light of day with Bray a sophomore and the Gatorade National Player of the Year coming in as a freshman in Worley.

ok... we could still get hit hard, but still, BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Quote :
"KNOXVILLE -- One of the most important developments in the University of Tennessee's lengthy case with the NCAA was former coach Lane Kiffin receiving a failure-to-monitor charge instead of the Volunteers' football program.

The university's response to the NCAA, which UT released to the Times Free Press on Monday, explained the details of why Kiffin, who left UT for Southern Cal after one season, was given the charge. After receiving the NCAA's Notice of Allegations in February, UT formally responded in May and went before the Committee on Infractions in June.

Contained in the 190-page document is UT's reply to each of the alleged 10 major infractions against the men's basketball and football programs, the school's self-imposed two-year probation and the other punitive actions the school imposed on former and current football and basketball coaching staffs.

While the document vividly describes the downfall of UT's former basketball staff with transcripts of the conversations former head coach Bruce Pearl and assistants Tony Jones, Steve Forbes and Jason Shay had with NCAA investigators in which they admitted to the lies and attempted cover-up that ultimately led to their firings in March, the football portion of the case is still shrouded with some mystery.

The NCAA lumped four separate recruiting infractions of a secondary nature into one major infraction, though two of those violations involving former assistant David Reaves are heavily redacted to protect the identity of former or current UT students.

Now the offensive coordinator at New Mexico, Reaves allegedly had UT students contact football recruits illegally, which UT disputed in its response, and his involvement in two members of UT's now-defunct Orange Pride hostess group attending a high school game in South Carolina is the biggest mystery in this case.

"The university does not believe it is appropriate to cite Kiffin for failing to monitor Reaves in that instance," the response states. "Rather, the weight of the evidence is that Reaves acted on his own and without notice to Kiffin. However, as the head coach, Kiffin was ultimately responsible for all employees of the football program."

As for the 16 impermissible phone calls during a Jan. 3-9, 2010, contact period and the impermissible in-person off-campus contact of then UT recruiting intern Steve Rubio with administrators at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., UT said it provided Kiffin with enough information that he should have prevented the violations.

From December 2008 to January 2010, UT's compliance staff "provided no fewer than 135 rules-education items" to football coaches and administrators.

"When the university began hiring the former football staff ... the compliance staff immediately began a campaign to fully educate the staff on all aspects of NCAA rules," the response states. "The compliance staff was particularly focused on rules education for the football staff at that time because several of the football coaching staff members were returning to college football from careers in the National Football League."

Brad Bertani, UT's associate athletic director for compliance, said he "vividly" remembered having conversations with the staff "about the impermissibility of certain contacts" just a month before the illegal calls were made.

During the 2009 contact and evaluation period, UT's senior associate athletic director David Blackburn said Bertani and coordinator of football operations Kyle Strongin "were in frequent communication about the permissibility of the coaches' activities," according to the response. Though Strongin also confirmed he relayed Bertani's messages to the coaches, Kiffin said he "did not recall" the compliance staff providing any specific information on illegal calls.

On their recruiting trip to Florida, Kiffin brought Rubio because he attended St. Thomas Aquinas and his familiarity with the area would help Kiffin more easily navigate the area. Rubio had no contact with any prospects while in the school, speaking only with his former coaches and teachers, according to the response.

Blackburn said he specifically told Kiffin on the eve of the trip and Rubio during the trip that Rubio wasn't allowed to enter any schools. Kiffin said it was a "rare circumstance," so he allowed Rubio to enter "to see his old buddies."

"In both instances," the response said, "Kiffin was in a position to have prevented the violations before they occurred."

UT's ability to pin the failure-to-monitor charge and the illegal recruiting on former coaches, along with corrective actions and cooperation with the NCAA, should alleviate the NCAA's pending penalties, which could come sometime next month.

"The university is deeply disappointed that these violations have occurred," the response states. "The depth of the disappointment is matched only by its commitment to doing whatever is necessary to restore the reputations of its men's basketball and football programs. That commitment is perhaps most visibly evidenced by the hiring of Derek Dooley as head football coach and Cuonzo Martin as head men's basketball coach. Both men have impeccable reputations for integrity and compliance with governing rules and regulations.""

Hope this is true.

Quote :
"Other than what it has already self-imposed, the University of Tennessee athletic department will not be hit with any further sanctions from the NCAA, multiple sources told the News Sentinel on Tuesday.

The multiple sources requested anonymity because the NCAA is set to announce the findings from June's Committee on Infractions hearing Wednesday.

Former men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl will receive a three-year show cause penalty while his three former assistants - Tony Jones, Jason Shay and Steve Forbes - all will receive a one-year show cause penalty.

Pearl said Tuesday that he has not been told the length of his penalty.

“I have been told today that we will be informed tomorrow,’’ Pearl said. “I know the decision is made and we’ll find out tomorrow. But I believe others probably know what the penalty is.’’

Jones said he was also told on Tuesday that the penalties would be announced on Wednesday.

“I don’t know what the penalties will be,’’ Jones said, “but if it’s true that we will receive a show-cause penalty for not being forthcoming, that’s disappointing in light of the instructions we were given by the UT legal counsel.’’

The two major violations levied against the football program were found to be secondary violations and no further penalties were levied against the UT program, former coach Lane Kiffin or former assistant David Reaves.

The "bump" violation committed by Pearl and Jones days after it was learned UT had received its Notice of Inquiry from the NCAA was not considered a major violation, according to sources.

Before the June hearing, UT self-imposed two years of probation for the entire athletic department, along with various self-imposed penalties in both the men's basketball and football programs.

Pearl said he’s still mulling over a head-coaching offer from the Texas Legends of the NBA Development League that’s reportedly worth $500,000 a year.

“I am still in the decision-making process on that,’’ Pearl said.

More details later online and in Wednesday's News Sentinel."

yeah, that really really sucks. By FAR the best player on the defense, they never said what it was but apparently he has some really fucked up shit going on at home, not sure if that had anything to do with the dismissal or not

Quote :
"“Our program has devoted a tremendous amount of energy, resources, support, and care in an effort to help Janzen manage his personal challenges,” Dooley said in the release. “I will always be there to help him as a person, but there comes a time when a player’s actions preclude him from the privilege of playing for the University of Tennessee football team.

“Although I’m disappointed with this outcome, we will never compromise the long-term organizational values and goals we maintain here at Tennessee.”

Jackson spent time away from the program throughout spring and the first session of summer school dealing with undisclosed personal problems in hopes of coming back for another season with the program."

Heat index in Knoxville is 103.

Six Montana fans have already been taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion, I hope the players are similarly impacted.
