I would compare firefly to star wars, not star trek, I just saw serenity, it was more of a space opera type about adventure and fun then star trek

Firefly is star wars without George Lucas and the copyrighted names.

Think about it.

It becomes very easy to imagine a star wars series or movie with competent leadership.

In other words, it would print money.

well the premise of the show was to be a space western, and most westerns are set in the post-civil war era.

^^ I actually saw Serenity first and then watched the dvds. I agree that the pilot isn't nearly as funny as some of the later episodes. It mainly serves to set the groundwork for the show in terms of plot and characters. Trust me, there are some very hilarious moments.

yah one thing i really dug about the show was the reconstruction elements as well.

I thought it was a neat idea and def generated some interesting characters and stories throughout the series.

Regarding original question why Firefly "could have been the star trek of our time" if it wasn't cancelled by Fox, I interpret this as why it could have become a Star Trek-like franchise if it wasn't cancelled by Fox. Star Trek-like meaning, ongoing space travel/adventure with a crew aboard a starship.

After having watched several amazing shows like this, Arrested Development, and Pushing Daisies on netflix - which were all cancelled in their prime - I've come to believe that there is a "right place at the right time" element for the television format that has to work out for a show to take off. Television networks are always mucking around with the competition, marketing, demographics, and timeslots that it makes it difficult for pure goodness to get the exposure it needs. That, and people are dumb. I mean, if I want to believe humanity has a chance in the long run, there has to be a compassionate explanation for why shows like these are cancelled, but Survivor and American Idol (Simon Cowell insults you show) thrive. Right?

With the inception of netflix and hulu, I hope that the traditional cable paradigm tanks. Maybe then, programming people will take a longer view and produce content that lasts - my understanding is that Firefly has done well with dvd sales and/or syndication as has Family Guy.
