It seems like more and more games are doing that these days.

I was surprised at how small this game is. It's only like 2.5 GB. I know size doesn't really matter (that's what she said) but I would have thought that a game 15 years in the making would have had more substance to it than that.

I never understood by people thought this was going to be good. Everybody expected Chinese Democracy to be the shit after 15 or so years too.

Really? I never thought this and I'm pretty sure 90% of the people thought it was going to be a shitty game too. It's kind of like the Serious Sam games, shitty game but fun if your drunk. Pretty sure that's what they were going for.

I mean the game has been made and remade how many times? People were just happy that it's finally out of the vaporware status, no matter if it was the shittiest game ever made. They just want to be part of the gaming history.

I have been watching gameplay in justin.tv, and it basically Duke Nukem from 1998 with 2011 graphics. Not a totally bad game, you should just keep in mind that its a follow-up to Duke Nukem and its just more of the same with a graphical upgrade.

I see tons of quicktime events. QTE are the worst thing to happen to video games in the history of video games. They kill immersion as well as player creativity and player development. To use them in Duke? Shameful.

Life re-gen is the second worst thing ever to happen to the FPS genre. It panders to the impatient, casual 12-year old gamer who has no clue what made last decade a far better decade in gaming. That it's being used in DNF is the second nail in the coffin (for me). They did try to add some flavor to it (ego vs. "life")......don't care.

And the two-weapons-only system...it was a horrible experience in the demo, and appears to be the same in the full game. And grenades are different class of item (and therefore key/button)...another unfortunate development in FPS gaming this decade. This was a pain in the ass during the demo, so I assume it will be during the game.

It appears vehicle use is only in third-person in the full game as well. You know, I'm okay with the "every sixth level is going to be a vehicle level because this is a modern FPS and teenagers think running over enemies is AWRSOME BRA!" mantra if it's done properly (see Half Life 2).

Will await the $14.99 point in a few years...

replace years to months. pretty sure this will be in the bargain bin sooner than you think. This isn't a COD valued series.

The only FPS game I have seen so far (granted I hardly play games), that combined a first person shooting and vehicle system together to look and feel right, was Far Cry 2. Granted that game was pretty good, the things that were bad about it really kept it on the mediocre level. To me, those things was mainly the lack of immersion, even despite it basically being an open world sand box FPS. To me, with all the advances in gaming, the ONLY way to make a 3rd or 1st person game is for it to be open world sandbox. I hate totally linear games that feed you through a level with scripted events. As Wyloch said, it kills immersion and creativity/strategy. Anyways....

I hate games that tack on time limits for no reason. That kills player creativity in as much as you have to rush as opposed to taking your own approach.

After that I've got protect missions, specifically because the object you are protecting nearly always has the dumbest AI. They'll gravitate toward enemies without a care in the world. And then there's the games that realized they couldn't get the AI right, so they opted to let you issue the wait and follow commands. The escort/protect mission then becomes. Tell companion to wait, clear ahead, walk back to the companion and tell them to follow, repeat ad nausea. If they're going to do that you might as well not include the worthless tag-along to begin with.

QTEs are at least 3rd on my list.

A quick survey of reviews will show you this game is being almost universally shat on. Avoid unless you want a drunken evening of reminiscing about the golden age of gaming.

Wow. They should have just given that guy the copy for free and made an event out of it to get free publicity... unless there are hundreds of people cashing in their pre-orders, in which case it's nothing special.

Still they should have knocked off more than $10. The guy paid $10 down in 2001. That's probably $15 in today's money. Besides, from what I hear this game is bad/average enough to go below $39.99 in the next month or so.

And in 1993 you couldn't even look up and down.

Someone told me on another thread, I thought it was class quake, but its doom. I think MGS4 would fit the map design since it was only 3 hours of actual game play and 8 hours of cut scene. I literally got so frustrated with cut scenes every 30 seconds that were back to back in some cases that I never finished the game.

I too would not agree with that statement. I never made that statement.

I think the sweet spot really was 1997 - 2002. Technology was sufficient for ambitious game designs to be achievable. Since then it's been all downhill.

I would include hl2 as part of the sweet spot since physics really became a big part of the map designs, although downhill after that. We could just write that off as a fluke for 04... and then add portal to the mix. And if you don't include open world fps like oblivion or fallout 3 minus their buggy as hell craptastic engine.

I think the best 2 years of gaming was 1997-98, in fact I even made a thread about it once I think.

But I don't think it's gone downhill from 2002 at all.

BTW do yourself a favor and play the Deus Ex: HR preview build. It's incredible.

Instagib on the 3 towers map was teh awesome.

1. MGS games aren't FPS
2. MGS games have always strived to be over-the-top "interactive movies"

It matters in a discussion of map design in FPS. You want me to opine on level design in fucking Pac Man?

And MGS2 was trash. Raiden is a bitch.
