Ill agree, VA sucks ass for speeding tickets. Though surprisingly In the Hampton Roads area all the interstates are signed for 55 mph, though if youre not doing at least 65 youre going to get run over.

I do not see how Virginia's misdemeanor which can be elevated to felony reckless driving at a speed in excess of 80 mph is not a violation of the 8th amendment. On the free way 81 is 11 over when the speed limit is 70mph.

In my opinion this is clearly an excessive punishment for the crime.

IIRC, I-85 is 70 on the VA side of the border and it drops to 65 when you hit NC.

I-95 is now 70 in VA, it upgraded a bit ago. And in the 30 miles of it near Emporia, I routinely see more cops than in the remaining 150 miles between there and DC.

Yeah I-95 definitely has 70 mph for quite a bit of it, and when I drove up from the Tennessee side (I think I-81?) there was also 70 mph

Yesterday, there were only 2 cops on my side of the highway near Emporia. But 295 around Richmond had 6. Including one that looked almost like he was dug in to a hill in the median. Some poor sot was so interesting he was handcuffed and had 3 cars and a wrecker stopped on the side of the road with him. I'm guessing $175 to a lawyer ain't gettin' him off the hook.

i commute to the DC area from Raleigh weekly and lately i have been seeing more cops.
not too many during my block from 345pm - 750pm / only saw a few on both highways

last week though i saw cops, troopers and sheriffs everywhere

I used http://www.powellandparrish.com/ -- lawyer got it dropped to Improper Equipment. $121 in court costs + $150 to the lawyer.

Not sure if it will be any different for you since it's 11 over and I had a spotless driving record prior to this.

Thanks Stein. I've had tickets before but my license is spotless right now; the last points were dropped almost 2 years ago. I'm worried about the 81 part since for some reason as soon as you're going over 80 mph you become an enemy of the state

I'll look into that tomorrow when I'm back in Raleigh.


Also, it would now seem that I-95 in VA is 70mph in lots of places now. More than before that's for sure.

So I just drove back from Maryland (was up for the NCSU game) and while driving through southern Virginia the following happened:

I was cruising along going 78-79 mph in a 70 mph zone and was following a large Chevy SUV (fuel mileage drafting benefits FTW). For some reason (traffic maybe) I was a few hundred yards behind the Chevy and wanted to catch up so I stepped on the gas for a few seconds and sped up to 91 for an instant and then coasted back down to speed as I was just 4-5 car lengths behind the Chevy again. Just after I took my foot off the gas I noticed a HP unit under an overpass on my right standing next to his car clocking people. He didn't even flinch as I went by, so to the best of my knowledge he clocked me when I was going 78 or so and moved onto another car before I sped up

yeah, $250 is the pretty standard rate elsewhere, so $350 sounds reasonable for VA. Might call around to a few other places, though...it's not like you're hiring Johnny Cochrane. Someone might do it for $250.

I used Miller-Ceracuolo for $135 (+$120 in court fees) for droppin my 80 in a 70 in Emporia to defective equipment.

Pretty sure that $135 is a flat fee for speeding tickets, look them up before you drop $356 instead of just $235.

The problem is that they are out there writing tickets because they can, not because they should. I've been stopped in Emporia and on I-85 in VA for doing only 11; total crap. Unless you are doing some interdiction, look at why you are stopping people. Any monkey with a RADAR gun can stop a car or write a registration ticket. But do you write someone because you can or because you should?

Last year I got stopped on 85 where it drops of 70 -> 65 ->60 or so? Totally deserved that encounter.

I'm trying to decide if I should just pay my ticket for 79 in a 65 in Carroll county, or pay a lawyer $$$ to maybe do something about it. Any thoughts/opinions, lawyer suggestions for Carroll county?

My last ticket was from Dec 09 for 81 in a 65 and I used a PJC in NC (I don't *think* a VA conviction will affect that, right?).

Driving to Martinsville today for NASCAR and I knew to do the speed limit because VA are bitches about that but I was going down a highway that was two lanes, huge median, two lanes (similar to 40) where the speed limit was 60 the whole way. Apparently I missed a temporary sign on the side of the road that said because of the race the speed limit was 45. Crested a hill with 2 other cars cop is there and of course the cop pulls me (only one with an NC tag) so I got a 59 in a 45. Total bullshit. I was 100 yards from parking!!! I honestly thought I was doing under the speed limit the whole time.

That's what I ended up doing. Gonna set me back at least $400 (lawyer and court fees) but they seem to think they can get it reduced to a no-points offense.
