3.5 years and still going (we will end up married, just haven't quite gotten to the formal proposal.)

Some friends of mine got married on the tenth anniversary of their first date, and were both 25 at the time. Six years later and they're still quite happily together. Marrying your high school sweetheart isn't the right decision for a lot of (most?) people, but for some, it really can work out.1/31/2011 10:47:11 AM |

for sure. We got married on our 9th anniversary of dating (which was 2009, at which point I was 25) and I couldn't imagine not being with her. However, I definitely won't say it is for most people. Some people just get lucky and meet someone they completely click with early and then don't grow apart/into different people as they grow up through college etc. That's how it was for us at least.

Couple years with daughter's mom. Whole time was pretty unpleasant at best, and I never would have had anything approaching that kind of patience had my little girl not been involved.

The situation was verrrry complicated. My parents wouldn't pay for a wedding until I finished school so that's why we were engaged for so long. Plus he was an abusive psycho who told me he would kill me if I left him(and gave me plenty of reason to believe it) so I was scared to death to leave him. Even when I did leave him I was afraid to date anyone else 1/31/2011 2:27:16 PM |

^^ no. i'm too busy to be nauseated at the moment. i think it was also more the i could figure out where a year of my life went feeling, than the LT relationship feeling. i was like 5 years? where is the 1 year i can't remember?! but then i realized it was 4 and felt safe again.

Probably a question for a separate thread...
But for the people who were in the 3/4+ year relationships...wtf happened?? I couldn't imagine being with someone that long and not having it work out. I guess what I really mean is...what happened after year 2/3 that you didn't know before then? 1/31/2011 9:18:23 PM |

sometimes relationships continue way beyond their expiration date, for many varying reasons. perhaps after the first couple years you just resign yourself to being miserable for the rest of your life, then eventually you realize you don't have to put up with that and you deserve happiness!

Then again, we were also very young and it turns out he's a giant asshole so it all worked out for the best.
I feel like for something to happen to the relationship I'm in now, it would probably have to be something very, very major to end things. Like DV, being cheated on, etc.

marriage is one reason relationships continue past their expiration date
perpetual optimist over here
on the OTHER hand marriage gives some people incentive to work on problems harder than they would otherwise, i guess.
what is DV?
also i know someone who was in a relationship, no marriage, for 9 years. and she wasn't young (well THAT young, it didn't start in high school or anything). that shit is crazy. i wonder how many years of that were suck years. like the last 1? the last four? i mean, damn.

domestic violence
PS.... guess what I get to deal with when I graduate? Marriages ending because the people are carriers of recessive disorders, or a similar situation
No joke.

oh yea domestic violence.
damn....your career field is super interesting though. so people end marriages because they won't be able to have healthy children with their spouses? i guess that would be really devastating for some people...to find out that they were either a) infertile/spouse can't procreate or b) have a high chance of having a kid with a genetic disorder
i've said it on here before though i just can't imagine going that apeshit over having my OWN genetic kids. if i really wanted a family, i'd just adopt (or find some other alternative). but i know that everyone is different, blahblahblah now i'm on a huge tangent...
