she is in a bitter custody dispute with the father of the child. article doesn't say that the father asked her what she thought their child was, but i guess she was just trying to say "the child is black, i am black, you are white, so i get to keep the child".

I don't understand being proud of something that you had no control over. I'm not proud of my skin color. I'm not proud of my nationality. Those things are just coincidences, really. I can be proud of my achievements, for instance, because I consciously pursued a path that led to them.
I don't know where I originally heard this Sam Harris quote, but I think it says what I'm trying to convey: "Whenever we get at the truth, we transcend culture, we transcend our upbringing. The discourse of science is a good example of where we should hold out hope for transcending our tribalism."2/7/2011 11:00:32 PM |

On the other hand, if you were raised and supported and identify with a certain cultural, racial, or ethnic group, then how do you feel if that same group perceives that you have abandoned them, and are no longer part of their group?
It is likely that based on the way she was perceived as a child, Halle grew up identifying more with blacks than whites, even though I think she was raised by her white mother. If that is the case, then her personal identity draws association from them. Now, as an adult, when other members of that group are labeling her as an outcast, it may be difficult to deal with. Not saying that you can't be perfectly comfortable not associating or labeling yourself in any way, but she may feel like a bit of a ship without a port if she cannot associate with the black community.
And I'm not evaluating her position, just providing a possible rationale. 2/7/2011 11:39:37 PM |

^^Yeah, I could see why she would feel that way. The fault isn't really on her end, it's on the end of the people out there that would mentally exclude her from "their group." 2/8/2011 12:01:30 AM |

Umm, you could ignore the 'group'?
I understand that as a child it is important because for children it is a big thing, the sense of belonging, and that's how they make friends and stay happy.
But she is 40 now. She has whatever friends she has, and they will stay her friends no matter who she sleeps with. What does she care about the greater black community in how they see her? Does it really matter to her/affect her whether they think she has abandoned them? They can have exactly zero affect on her or her happiness. So maybe she should grow out of this tribal mentality now that she is an adult...?
^ The fault IS on her end too; she is perpetuating this mentality. Every piece of trash thrown into the sea pollutes the sea. You can't say "but this is just a small bottle cap, it won't really matter". And actually in this case, it is not just a bottle cap, but a whole shipment of bottles she is dumping into the sea, seeing as how her celebrity status gives her a very wide audience.

This comes up a bunch with mixed babies. I don't think that it is so much about racism, more than it is people trying to hold on to their culture. If she wants to raise the kid up as a black child around her family then so be it, fine by me.
But, I don't see how this should be a determining factor in custody though, which I am sure complicates things. 2/8/2011 2:59:08 PM |

nope.
but white people don't generally agree on everyday situations where they factor in race, so i had to pick ones where they WOULD agree...
The point is, the average American would think of that baby as "black" or at least wonder "what race is she? Definitely not white"

Data from similar past situations with other people?
And, UH NO. Only the white supremacists and generally posh classists holding on to whiteness/Englishness/Britishness would think of that baby as BLACK. And that's what 10%, max 20% of the population. You would have to be blind (or racist) to call that baby black. (And I am talking about White Americans only here... I have no clue how many Black Americans would think of her as black, because apparently, a lot of them seem to subscribe to the "one-drop" theory)

So? That's just curiosity, not racism or hatred. Nahla obviously doesn't look typical caucasian... (because she is 1/4 black) so what's the harm in asking/wondering what kind if mix she is?
