It's a comic book movie. I wouldn't have minded them using normal WW2 weapons, but I'm also glad they had Hydra and Red Skull because I'm a comic fan.

Also, Cap is more realistic than many superheroes but he's still well above any human capability and having over the top action is necessary. If there wasn't crazy action why would they need Captain America? What would make him unique?

Besides, don't we have enough generic World War 2 movies?

The current big budget comic book movie genre has been going strong for over a decade and doesn't seem to be slowing.

Also, the movie isn't really geared towards children, it's geared toward sci-fi and comic book fans. Exit polls showed the majority of people watching this were over 25.

Yes, they have been making comic book movies for a decade, but how many have been considered "Good"? Batman, Spider-Man, Iron Man, X-men...and that's it? I've seen about all of the comic book movies out of straight nostalgia even though I rarely walk away pumped afterwards and I believe that's why a lot of people watch them. Nostalgia.

Ask yourself this, would this movie be any good if it was an original character? I think it would have been a complete flop. That is going to catch up to the industry when they run out of recognizable characters to milk.

I also don't understand the insistence on staying completely true to the source material. I was a huge comic book fan growing up, particularly of the mutant universe of Marvel, but I have no problem with the latest X-Men movie taking liberties for the sake of telling a good story. No, you can't substantially change the characters, but removing *pew pew* laser guns and COBRA style bad guy costumes doesn't take away from the character.

Depends on what you mean by good. Plenty have been great selling and entertaining movies, such as The Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Captain America. Multiple movies in most of those franchises you have listed have been good, it's a significant percentage of the franchise.

There have been some flops but that's true of any genre, and superhero movies generally make much more money than other genres. They are far from exhausting material, whether you think it's a good thing or not. If they don't want to use the less mainstream heroes there's always endless sequels and reboots that are sure to make money.

Also they can make successful movies out of less recognizable characters by introducing them in one or more movies and making spin offs. Most non-marvel fans probably didn't know who Nick Fury was before Iron Man, but he's going to get his own movie after the Avengers. Also if they proceed with the Ant-man and/or runaways movies we'll see if the less recognizable characters get

Would the movie have been good if it was an original character? I don't know, it wasn't an original character, it was Captain America and was true to the character. If they aren't going to be faithful to the character then what's the point? There were no problems with the latest x-men movie, they changed some chronology and some backstory as always happens in the movies but the characters are faithful to their comic personalities and powers for the most part.

Hydra is an organization bent on conquering the world through technology. Having them use the same uniforms and guns as regular Nazis would be like having Superman wear a black trenchcoat.

SPOILERS REGARDING BUCKY & CAP























In the comic, Steve and Bucky are trying to disarm the bomb that gets sent to blow up NYC. Bucky's arm gets caught on the bomb, and shoves Steve off into the ocean. The bomb blows up in the air, so we are lead to believe that Bucky dies. In the film, they have stretched the possibility of Bucky surviving that fall very thin. Bucky survives in the comic books, captured by the soviets, and turned into an assassination machine - only activated when he has someone to kill/a mission.

The reason why Bucky is important to stay alive, is that in the Superhero Civil War (which I think would make a fantastic movie), is that Steve gets assassinated. And Bucky picks up the shield.

Yes, as AndyMac mentioned, Steve is again Captain America in the current book. In fact, I'm almost 100% positive that he was brought back into the role recently because of the movie coming out. I kinda wish he would've stayed in the Commander role, and Bucky could've kept being Cap. Ah well.

Personally, I've enjoyed this little Marvel experiment where they've generated multiple, stand alone movies for different characters that are interwoven into a larger Avengers storyline. It's been fun to watch, and I hope they pull off the actual Avengers movie to cap it all off.

I liked it more than First Class and I didn't see Thor. Definitely going to see it before Avengers comes out though. I thought Captain America rivaled the charm of Iron Man (the movie I mean). I think people are hating on it because it's taking WWII and fantasizing it a bit. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I liked this so much more than First Class, but that's probably because I've been a diehard X-fan for years and can nitpick the hell out of it. I have a decent knowledge of Captain America, but not enough to know every detail.

I thought the movie was pretty bad. Thor straddled the line of cheesiness...Captain America took it a bit too far. I was pretty disappointed...and I'm easy to please with movies.

The only redeeming part of this movie was the Avengers trailer after the credits. That and Hayley Atwell's tits. They tried to hide them, but those bigguns are impossible to hide.

to me, the theme of the movie was "of course"

like of course the bad guys have surveillance cameras in the 1940s, they have plasma rifles.
of course the car has a rocket boost button.
of course there happens to be a random chain that cap can use to swing etc etc

i thought it was entertaining and fun.

I didn't have problems with the "there's no way that could happen" stuff. I had a problem with the cheesy acting. Tommy Lee was the only redeeming character in that movie. Horrible accents, corny jokes, etc. I liked Thor and Green Lantern...I disliked Captain America. Probably the most disappointing movie I've seen this summer. I hope he doesn't fuck up Avengers.

Who knows? There's a ton of actors in there already. I'm willing to bet it's mostly going to be Robert Downey Jr. anyway. I'd bet Avengers is essentially going to be Iron Man 3.

I saw this movie the other night. It was great. Well all liked it, but this is what happened: One of my friends, who we'll call "Smitty Bojangles") left the theater early to do who knows what. The rest of us stayed to enjoy the late night experience.

Ten minutes after Smitty leaves, an usher comes down the aisle and starts calling out: "Is there a Smitty Bojangles here? Anyone in the audience named Smitty Bojangles?" My friends and I grab his attention and explain that Smitty left. The usher told us that somebody was on the phone and said it was extremely important that they talk to Smitty.

"Who is it?" i asked."

"Some girl," he said.

"Oh..." I had a pretty good idea who it was. Smitty's mental girlfriend. "He's gone, and we have no idea where he went." I explained.

The usher said, "OK," and walked out of the theater. Two minutes later, the film comes to a sudden stop, the lights flare on, and 3 theater employees come into the theater. Everybody in the crowd is groaning and asking what's up? The usher from earlier points at me and says, "That's the guy who knows him."

The manager comes over to me and says, "There is a person on the phone named (we'll call her Skanky McTittle) Skanky who need to speak with Smitty. She says it's an emergency."

I explain to the manager that Smitty is gone and none of us have any idea where he went, but I'll be more than happy to talk to Skanky on his behalf. Of course, everyone in the audience is pissed because of the disturbance, and they all burst into cheers and applause when I leave the theater. Nice!

It wasn't even my fault. I'm not the one who called a movie theater looking for somebody.

Anyway, I get to the phone and ask Skanky what the deal is. "What's the emergency?" I asked her. I knew she was a little dramatic.

"There isn't an emergency," she says. I just really want to talk to Smitty." FU*$!!! She's got to be kidding, right?

I said, "Are you telling me that you called a movie theater and had the manager stop the film and walk through a crowded audience just so you could talk to your boyfriend?"

Her reply, "Yes. Where is he?"

I explained that I didn't know where he went, but I added a few nuances to the story. I told Skanky McTittle that Smitty left with 2 hot dunk chicks and probably wouldn't be home until way late.

"What?!" she fumed, "Who are they? What are their names?"

"I don't know," I told her, "they are just a couple of girls who seemed to like Smitty. Can I go back to my movie now?"

I slammed the phone down after telling her NOT to call back again. The manager and the ushers overheard my side of the conversation, so they were onto what was really happening. I asked them to please not stop the film if Skanky called back. She was clearly mental and besides, Smitty was not even at the theater.

They said it was cool and I stumbled back to my seat in the dark theater. I missed the next few minutes of the movie (in addition to what I already missed from being on the phone) because I had to explain what had just happened.

Finally got around to seeing this. It was better than what I was expecting it to be, but I've actually seen the other Captain America movie from about 20 years ago. The bar couldn't have been lower.

I found the CGI in the beginning where they spliced Steve Rogers' head onto a small body to be very distracting at times. If that wasn't CGI then I don't know what happened because it looked very strange at times.

If you count graphic novels as comic books, then you have to throw Sin City, 300, and Watchmen into the mix.
