dude we were talking about dumb&dumber. You are definitely a super faggot if you dont like dumb&dumber.

It's a top 25 all-time comedy by all accounts. For most people it's a top 5-10.

This isn't like we're arguing over something debatable like whether or not you like There's Something about Mary or Forgetting Sarah Marshall. This isnt a chick flick wannabe comedy like 50 first dates. This isn't a stupid funny comedy like It's Pat. This isn't even a funny/eh comedy like Deuce Biggalow.

We talking about Dumb&Dumber. Not a game, not a game, not a game. We talking about Dumb&Dumber.

Nobody and I mean fucking nobody that's seen the hangover is going to be interested in ever seeing that again. I'd rather fuck a girl I met at PB's in 2004 that's gained 30 lbs since then again then spend what seems like 3 hours watching that movie."

Holy shit, you're detached. You really think guys in that demo wouldn't watch The Hangover again? It's probably the most popular comedy of the last 5 years. Which was more popular than the hangover? Superbad? Knocked Up? 40-year-old virgin? Old School maybe, Wedding Crashers maybe, Anchorman maybe...

What's your idea of a "good" comedy? The genre obviously doesn't even have to be a complex premise to be good (Animal House, Airplane, Planes, Trains + Automobiles). Four guys go to Vegas and ridiculousness ensues.

^lol woah woah woah

you can like the hangover (i do), but to say that anchorman only "might" be more popular/funny is really just daft.

this doesn't speak to their comedic merits but The Hangover did over $450 mil at the box office, while Anchorman grossed less than $100 mil...it's pretty clear which one was more popular.

dude do i really have to list whats funny? i did that on page 1 pretty extensively.

^ OH NO HERE COMES THE GROSS ARGUMENT.

The gross argument proves exactly what my post said. It appeals to a wide audience.

My 60 year old parents belong to a club of people who drive 30 minutes to town once a month to watch a movie at the theater and eat at a "local" restaurant (they rotate establishments).

Most of the people in their group are in their 60's and 70's. They are by most accounts "well off" as they all have networths over $1MM and a few have networths in the $20-$40MM range. They loved the hangover.

Would they have loved Anchorman? Nope. Would they have loved Dumb&Dumber? Nope. Would they have loved Zoolander? Nope. Would they have loved Wayne's World? Absolutely not.

Those are all classic elite comedies.

So don't tell me a movie is great because 70 year old men with their 58 year old wives had a grand tooting time at the theater before they got grilled ham steaks.

Seriously dude grow a pair or just admit you aren't a comedy lover.

Old people smell funny.

So if a movie does well at the box office it is automatically not funny anymore?

He's acting like Anchorman/Zoolander/Dumb&Dumber were cult classics or something. Millions of college frat boys quoted that shit incessantly just like they did the hangover. We're not talking Rocky Horror Picture Show.

will ferrell comedies are in a different category than other comedies. they all have their own special comedic ways... it is hard to compare those to things like wedding crashers, hangover, etc...
i'd put hangover in my top 5 comedies.

I watched dumb and dumber last night, just to refresh my memory of it, and I gotta, say, not nearly as funny as a lot of the other movies mentioned in here.

Waynes World, Airplane, Hangover, etc... are better.

I think Dumb and Dumber was one of the best comedies ever, but like someone else mentioned, it's hard to watch comedies a second time. It's just not funny when you know whats coming.

I actually just watched the Hangover for the first time a month or so ago. Had never heard of it before (it came out during my stretch of when I cut of cable, so I never saw any previews of it). I thought it was pretty funny. That being said, I won't go out of my way to watch it again. If it ever shows on regular cable channels and I happen to catch it, I might stop and watch it. It would just depend on if there was anything else on.

And my opinion on some other movies listed ITT so you can know whether or not I'm detached
Supertroopers - Awesome
HTTM - eh, glad I didn't pay to see it
Wayne's World - Awesome
Zoolander - amusing, but won't make any favorite lists
I can't stand Will Ferrell or Jack Black, so anything with either one of them in it is a sure bet that I didn't find it funny

why do people even bother arguing over which movies are funnier? Seriously, people have different ideas on what is funny. Just say agree to disagree and move on with your lives and let some normal discussion go on in a thread. Humans...

Because writing a movie like Anchorman off because "I can't stand Will Ferrell or Jack Black, so anything with either one of them in it is a sure bet that I didn't find it funny" is an objectively wrong opinion.

Since we are discussing comedy preferences here, I thought Sideways kind of sucked.

A lot of pretentious people really loved it but I only laughed at a few parts.

I, too, have a strong dislike for Sideways

and a shitton of people I like/respect absolutely love it

it's well written and well acted, but I absolutely HATE wine culture so I probably went in wanting to hate it

[Edited on March 1, 2011 at 3:31 PM. Reason : it's really the whole wine thing that brought it down for me]

I loved Sideways...but I do think you have to have at least a little wine knowledge (or just have been around it by working in a restaurant or something) to get more lulz out of it. Although I'm definitely no expert, I managed a wine bar for a little while, and it definitely hit that shit on the mark (the discourse between Giamanti and Haden Church when they were hitting up the wineries was spot on).

Good question.

Never walked out of a movie either. I don't think I've even thought about it. Actually racking my brain right now to think of the most recent horrible movie I've been to.

i had to screen "Cats & Dogs" when i was working at a movie theater to make sure it was put together correctly. that is the most i've wanted to walk out of a movie.

but seriously, this thread is terrible. maybe the hangover isn't your favorite comedy, but don't try to act like it wasn't funny. whether or not a sequel will hold up to the 1st, who knows...

My dad and I walked out of a movie once. The only time I've ever walked out.

We left that movie and snuck into Starship Troopers.

I can't even remember what it was now, it must have been so bad my brain shut it out.

merlot fucking sucks movie be damned.

Wine snobs are really fucking gay, but if you go by taste you should immediately knock out every white and a few reds from any discussion.

Cabernet is the only wine I drink or order, period.

Unless someone else paid, then I drink it unless its Muscadine then I order beer and liquor simultaneously.

I thought sideways was good, comedy gold no but a solid movie.

The hangover isnt a horrible movie, its just realllly gay to watch it more than twice.

Just get on the internet you can spend 4-5 days in vegas for $500 and have your own life instead of acting like you're there through moderately funny make believe scenarios.

SPOILER ALERT: HE WAS ON THE ROOF AND NOW HE'S SUNBURNED OH MY GOD THINK OF THE SHENANIGANS WE JUST WENT THROUGH TOGETHER ON THIS JOURNEY WE PAID FOR CERAMIC PLATES AND MESSED UP A TOTALLY HOMO 60's VERSION OF A MIATA THAT BELONGS TO THE FATHER IN LAW.

Comedy is dialogue not situational. Anyone can think of a oh wow my girlfriend caught me fucking the secretary comedic situation. Not just anyone can write words that make you want to punch your own mother in the face.

The Other Guys is the best dialogue in a few years but Wahlberg's character makes the movie a one hitter.

When the next waynes world, anchorman, zoolander, super troopers comes out you'll know it. Dont try to force it or you'll be the dude who bought Knocked Up.

i would say MOST people dont enjoy comedies.

Most people say that the cable guy is too dark, freddy got fingered is stupid, hot rod is dumb etc.

dont even get me started on its pat, the ladies man type movies.

So no, most people do not enjoy comedies. If you can believe their rhetoric and what they say about them, most people actually loathe comedies.

I guess I am just extremely uncultured/unsophisticated/unhip or something.

I just watch movies to be entertained, mediocre, good, bad, whatever.... I laughed at cable guy, and I don't need to sit around analyzing it for it to be a "good" comedy for me.

I also listen to the radio, and enjoy it.
