Yep, that's true. My brother-in-law is a marine, he told me the same thing. His MOS is a aircraft mechanic, but he, and all other (at least enlisted) marines have to be proficient with an AR.3/22/2011 11:36:20 AM |

Haha, I was at MEPS 2 weeks ago and this dumb ass 17yo kid signed up for Navy Corpsman. Went ahead and took the oath and everything. He came back from his liaison into the waiting area bragging about how he was gonna be sailing the world on a big ass ship, taking it easy and doing basic health checks. We all had a good laugh when he realized his ass was gonna be imbedded with marines and headed to A-Stan. Poor guy seriously about puked on the floor 3/22/2011 11:49:50 AM |

Today we took a 4 hour thai cooking class and learned how to make 4 delicous dishes. Staying at a great resort on a private beach lounging by the infinity pool reading in the sunshine and relaxing in the jacuzzi in the moonlight. This is living!" |

i don't know what you guys are talking about regarding corpsmen. all HM's in the Navy are called corpsmen (it's the name of the rate and the only enlisted medical rating). corpsmen are not just the guys who serve with the marines (those are a specific NEC within the HM rate).

every military guy I know complains that their branch has turned into a bunch of pussies over time. My brother used to say that in the early 90s. 3/22/2011 12:19:57 PM |

every branch must do this. in the marines, everyone is just trained as an infantryman.3/22/2011 1:09:28 PM |

My pet peeve is when Marines say they don't need special forces in their branch because they are all elite. First off you do have special forces types (Recon Marines), second....quit acting like a douche.
...and I say this with all due respect to the devil dogs 3/22/2011 1:47:07 PM |

every marine has to shoot so many points in a rifle qual test to continue make it. all marine officers have to qualify with rifles and pistols. also, im pretty sure the navy and air force dont get to do live fire range exercises where they run down a field and shoot at targets along with live artillary, mortars, aircraft. only army does it on workups to the country and if they are in combat or the specific support roles in which they see combat. you dont see cooks in the army doing that.

this matters somewhat because the air force does do things but there is also navy aircraft and marine aircraft that do the same job. however, there are more air force people just watching the skies and they have all the heavy bombers and stealth stuff. if you ask whose going to do the air work in libya....its the navy and marines. also, marine corps has "cyberspace" guys hiding in a bunker somewhere too.

actually, no only medical guys who are attached to MARINES are CORPSman. notice the CORPS part. means with the marine corps. if you go into navy medical offices on the base, yea some randomly call each other corpsmen because they were once deployed with marines and now arent. OR they just call each other it for no reason. THEY ARE technically hospitalmen and instead of just being seaman or Petty officer 3rd class or whatever. they are on paper, hospital-man 3rd class.
Quote : | "every branch must do this. in the marines, everyone is just trained as an infantryman" |
that is not accurate because not EVERYONE in EVERY service fires a weapon in a qualification aspect. the navy i know dont require you to pass it, you just get to shoot it. to be a marine, you must pass the test with a minimum grade or you dont go on. Also, yea, all marines are taught infantry to a degree and then either go to infantry school or MCT. MCT teaches them just some extra things like tactics and whatnot but infantry school is where they teach them a lot more about being infantry.
I too hate sea stories...sometimes we have some information thats not completely false or true. try to be accurate but if you are really talking out your ass...just shutup

it's really not that hard

yes, there are "blue-side" and "green-side" corpsmen. They are all "hospitalmen".
There is a shitload of other incorrect stuff all through this thread. I don't feel like speaking to it all at the moment. 3/22/2011 8:08:44 PM |

hospitalmen is not and has never been the name of the rate
it has always, always been "hospital corpsman"
i don't know how to make that any clearer than linking to the navy.mil page that spells it out in black and white
