"I've got to agree that I haven't seen anything ever done about the Tobacco Road cellphone cheating"

Yeah it's sucks, I'm dealing with effin adults here, tell them not to cheat, and still there are those few who do.

And it sucks b/c Tobacco Road trivia has gotten so big that it's hard to deal with when there are 75+ people there sitting both upstairs and downstairs. They have stopped allowing trivia players to sit upstairs, unless it is completely full.

However, if cheating was as terrible as the couple haters on here claim, no one would ever go. Yet this past week, 14 teams and 73 people so keep hatin all you want...

And for what it's worth Diva, I know if you have been before you hear me announce no cheating. i've tried the being a dick approach to cheating and it just doesn't work. So now i just deduct from the scores if i see a cellphone out or suspect it b/c they are getting every question right... So while you may not "see" me doing it, i try my best to deal with it.

And like i said, they are adults. If they are going to cheat it's just the type of person they are....

How about announce the repercussions of cheating to the crowd?

It's easy to say "hey guise I deduct points if I see it" and not ever show proof of doing so.

Call out the groups you found cheating. Public humiliation is a hell of a drug.

Better yet, have an assistant go around and covertly take pics of the offending cheater in action. Show the pics on a big screen while announcing point deductions and round scores

When I ran a trivia night I told people if they needed to use their cell phone for any reason they had to go outside and wait until the round was done before returning to their team. Cut out people claiming, "I was just checking my mail!" etc.

i know diva, it's just tougher to catch people with such a big crowd. If Im on one side of the room i can't see everyone on the other side. I trust people to act like adults but when $100 is on the line some people are just losers...

I try to call out people when i catch them, make a scene, but like i said the people who cheat are just that way... If I call them out at the table, then they'll go to the bathroom to look stuff up... So instead I just make sure that their team doesn't win...

I remember when you guys came in and it was around the time when they let people sit upstairs and play. A lot of people were complaining to the owners and play but they have put and end to that. Things have gotten a lot better with everyone in one room.

Got any other ideas or are you looking to make some extra $$$ busting heads at trivia nights???

*Edit*
See i can do those things at the other places i host at, it's just the amount of people and space involved that makes it difficult at TR. I have no problems seeing the whole crowd at Brewmasters and can keep a better eye on everyone...

Where did you used to host at WolfpackGrrrr?

Nearly every team at TR trivia is cheating. Your trivia business sucks. In addition, a guy was bragging about having access to wherever it is that you steal questions from. Fuck you and fuck your small business. Buy a fucking ad.

my group bounces between hibernian and tobacco road.. unfortunately never seen any true consequences for cheating at either place, and i know it occurs sometimes. but we usually do well enough that we don't care _that much_

Oh it was in Japan so smaller crowds than you're dealing with. If I had a huge crowd to contend with I'd definitely get a helper and do the photo thing haha. Only once did I have a cheating issue and it was a guy who was a giant douche nozzle in the first place so no one was surprised.

The cheating is even worse than Saucer trivia and that's saying a lot.

But guys it's too hard to enforce the rules. I just want to sit on the stage and ask my questions.

I'll come say hi. You'll probably recognize me. You're absolutely full of shit if you claim to write all your own questions. If I can get this guy to spill the beans I'm going link that shit here and you'll have to steal from someone else.

Sure my team has gotten a couple questions wrong, but I don't understand why people have to cheat.

They aren't what I'd call "trivia" ya know?

So you are actually telling me this guy you know has access.....to the internet???

i've been making questions for over 5 years, have them cataloged at home.

I never said i write my own questions, i think of categories or a theme, then go on the internet and make questions using wikipedia. Sometimes i use old jeopardy categories from this site:
http://www.j-archive.com/
so there ya go, knock yourself out.

yeah i have picked over internet trivia sites for questions but i have gotten questions from all over the internet so post whatever site you want... There is no way to tell what categories i am doing ahead of time nor if i am using one of the 1000 i have already made at home...

you're going to be really upset when you find out Alex Trebek doesn't write his own questions too

Who cares if he gets the questions online? If people didn't cheat it wouldn't matter.

Do you write your own questions? Do you subscribe to a service? Do you lift questions from a free trivia site?

^^ I don't care - I would expect him to subscribe to a trivia service rather than waste time writing questions. He's the one that claimed to write his shit.

That's why you don't let people go to the bathroom during the round.

Also, the only trivia I've ever enjoyed in town is old Kings/Neptunes trivia, where the rounds are things like ten song identifications using only the sound of thunder at the beginning of the track. Does your trivia have similarly wacky rounds, or is it lame everyday shit like "Who directed Stagecoach?"
