Andy Katz was just on Sportscenter, and he was just randomly throwing out names that would consider the job. Guys that don't even have ties to the East coast.

damn tempted to create a "Pack Insider is the worst fucking thing in the history of anything" thread over this:

Gary Williams retiring. Maryland knew for a while already have things lined up. Won't be a huge name I'm told.

"I started thinking about it last year after we tied Duke for the ACC title," Williams told The Post’s John Feinstein in a telephone interview. "I've been doing this a long time and I thought it might be time to do something else. After [Debbie] Yow left, I thought I might enjoy it more this year and I really did like working with Kevin Anderson. He’s a straight shooter. But I think I’d been worn down by the previous 15 years [with Yow]. It grinds on you."

What a giant douche.

Quote :
"The D.C. area location, the ACC and the history of the program make this a job that could command interest from VCU's Shaka Smart, Villanova's Jay Wright, Gonzaga's Mark Few, Notre Dame's Mike Brey, Pitt's Jamie Dixon, Butler's Brad Stevens, Minnesota's Tubby Smith and Texas A&M's Mark Turgeon. Most if not all will pause to at least think about the potential. Of course, a number of them are quite happy in their current situations like Brey, Dixon, Stevens and Few. But it is a significant enough job to cause someone to pause."

Andy Katz being a turd sandwich.

so if we had really pursued one of these guys last month only to have found out that he had already been lined up for the MD job, I could see why Yow flipped her sh!t

I'd be shocked if Stevens, Few, Dixon, or Wright left their current schools. Even Shaka leaving would surprise me...he just signed a new contract and seems committed to VCU.

And yes, Katz is a douche.

And there's no way I believe that MD has known this for a while...if they did, they would have told GW to go ahead and retire sooner rather than later so they could move on with the hiring process instead of waiting till May to even start.

Maryland is a better job than NC State right now. Not even really close. Recent success and one of the top three or four most fertile recruiting grounds in the country. If they kept a quarter of the Baltimore/DC kids they made a run for and lost out on they'd have a ton of success.

Sweaty just got bitter about the AAU game he played harder than anyone until he started losing kids and threw a tantrum.

[Edited on May 5, 2011 at 11:15 PM. Reason : think of the kids they've lost out on the last decade - half are NBA stars now]

Definitely. Third best job in the ACC...still, a distant third to Duke and UNC. But easily third best in the ACC.

the mop kids at Maryland are excited, they won't have to wipe more sweat off the court from the coach than the players anymore

I live in DC and when he retired yesterday, I posted "Happy Trails, Asshole," and no one understood. Apparently most Maryland fans I know don't understand why we don't like them (the fish doesn't know it's wet?).

Lots of Sean Miller talk on PP.

If he takes that job over us, I will be very

IF that does happen, I would begin to think Debbie Yow was the reason we didn't get him.

i'd also think that if he did go to UMD, that he should never come to Raleigh without multiple bodyguards, because there would be lots of people who would hate him.

it wouldn't be pretty.

Watching the press conference Gary seemed to do a lot of "selling" of the program. I mean plenty of it was sincere I'm sure, but then he got into trying to justify how good of footing the program was on, which isn't the case. They've got a serious rebuilding job on their hands over the next 2-3 years. Jordan Williams is gone and two of their three commits have already decided to re-open their recruitment. I did like how he talked specifically to the students about how there actually are good people in this world that will help you out, and when you find them take full advantage of them and learn all you can from them.

I think that the Maryland job may be better than ours at the moment because of their more recent success/name recognition in basketball, but I don't think that it is so much better that Sean Miller would strongly consider it, and not think twice about State. He's still in the same comfy spot he was in during our search...good school with bball recognition, top recruiting class coming in, just won (regular season) conference. With the exception of Duke/Carolina, moving from PAC10 to ACC at the moment doesn't really seem like much of a jump up...particularly given that he is in such good shape right now.

Maryland job is definitely better than ours. Current recruits might actually remember Maryland winning a national championship during their lifetime...none of them were even born when we last won ours.

Plus, the DC/Virginia area is a hotbed of basketball talent. You could field consistent NCAA teams if you just shore up the local talent.

And as been said a bazillion times...they don't have any Duke/UNC teams in the area. They kinda have Georgetown (DC area), but even they're in a decent conference.

It shouldn't be enough to lure someone away like Miller...but it might get Smart or other big name mid major guys to think twice.

kind of sentimental about him leaving. if nothing else, he was one of the last remaining coaches around from a time when acc hoops was still a real juggernaut.

^^^^they could have been a more relevant powerhouse had GW gone after players that had handlers or made demands of him, like demanding playing time/certain positions etc.

he was way too stubborn to pull in top talent in the area, dudes were always going to UConn or something

Why are people pretending MD is a good job in the media? The same media that calls US a crazy fan base.

"Maryland has compiled a short list of candidates to replace retiring basketball coach Gary Williams and is waiting to hear back from one contender to gauge his interest in the job, according to a source with knowledge of the seach.

The list includes Arizona coach Sean Miller, the source confirmed.

But Miller is not the candidate that Maryland is waiting on, and Maryland said it would be incorrect to label Miller as a frontrunner although he is clearly in play."

That would be some epic shit if Miller went to Maryland. I'm not entirely sure I'd blame it on Debbie...hell maybe Gary talked him out of NC State and told him to go to UMD

Any other reasons for Gary's sudden retirement besides him getting old?
