I bet it's worse than just a crappy Fiero, it's been "lengthened" (cut and welded) and on heavier wheels...

If you still need practical due to it being your only car, an Evo or STI may be an option. I'm about the same height and have plenty of head room in my Evo VIII and can comfortably carry 4 people or baggage for a trip if needed. Not to mention that it was a blast in the snow/ice this winter.

Mine is an '03 and I got it with about 34k miles 6 years back for $24k so there should be plenty to pick from all through your price range.

I don't need totally practical. Just the ability to go to the grocery store or Best Buy and pick something up if it's called for. I could definitely make the Lotus work, but being the only car it might not be the best decision to get it. However, I don't mind making bad decisions if the car is awesome.

Isn't a lotus pretty much the exact opposite of daily driving practical? What can you pick up from best buy in that thing...a pair of headphones?

I bought a full tower case, hard drive, keyboard and a bunch of small stuff from fry's one time and managed to get it all in the passenger seat.

Gotten a full grocery cart of groceries in the trunk.
And two comforters, 3 pillows and two sets of sheets in the passenger seat before too.

It can fit more than you'd think in a pinch.

I might just buy a new car from now on, every single time I call up about a used car on a website I get the same message. Oh that sold about 15 minutes ago, but we have this in the back. I don't want the one in the back, I wanted that car
