You should tell your supposed best friend that this is quite rude for his fiance to ask the television back. I would suggest to him that her dead beat brother can deal with having a place to stay and using the television in the living room or he could go to a pawn shop and buy one for himself if it is that important. Asking for a gift back is low. It definitely shares with you the kind of person you are dealing with.

personally, I would be ashamed even to ask for the TV back after 18 months

this dude sounds like he's pretty whipped...not only is he allowing his fiance's brother to move in with him, but he's willing to pull a dick move like this purely because that brother, who isn't entitled to a goddamned thing, wants a big-screen TV

most would be, its impolite and in incredibly poor taste

did the fiance grow up in a trailer park or something, how does she not understand how rude this is? its just not how you have social interaction with friends, you don't do stuff like this.

that being said, the polite thing now is to return the tv. you are under no obligation to do so, but thats the classy response.

that's my plan. i sent him a text back saying i had not had time to look for a new one and was trying to finish furnishing and paying off the essential pieces of the condo (since i didn't realize i was going to need a new TV). and his response was "oh haha it's ok. I forgot about it so i wanted to check with ya"

meaning "my fiance keeps asking me to get the tv back from you"

This is a tough one... but yea, the TV is yours. It's kinda dick to ask for more than the base though.. just because he gave it to you. But I think your best bet is simply explain that he GAVE you the TV and you intend on keeping it.

Also, it's pretty rude to ask for the TV back... I'd leave the fiance out of it, this is purely between the two of you. Let him work out his "family" issues.

For fucks sake, the deadbeat brother-in-law is already living in his house, and already has a 30" TV in his room.

If the deadbeat brother-in-law bitching, then that shit needs to be addressed, stat.
If the wife is bitching, then that shit needs to be addressed, stat.

You need to be a good friend here, and tell your supposed best friend to find his testicles before they're thrown down a deep dark hole never to return. It's WAY too early in the relationship to cede all the power to her.

And if you make the unfortunate decision to cave here, return it sans base so you can recoup some of your $, and/or as a wedding present.

Quote :
"You gotta say something better than that"

Yeah that was my initial reaction too. This shit requires a conversation, not a little parting comment with no sting. At that point you're just co-signing the deadbeat brother-in-law's ungratefulness and/or the wife's bitchiness

The fiancee is sooo not classy.

What was she thinking? Tell her to go stick a TV remote up her butt.

if you don't give it back the fiance will eventually push you out of the picture after marriage.

if you do give it back you let that slutnose win, lose $150, and are bitter toward their new partnership if you aren't already.

maybe you should just keep it and tell them both to fuck off since you're gonna lose your "best friend" anyway.

^ This.

If you give it back, do NOT give the base back with it. If you do that, then a free (USELESS) gift from them to you has become a $150 (USEFUL) gift from you to them. Fuck that dude, do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT give that base back with the fucking TV. If you do this, you will have lost YOUR balls as well. Only one man has lost his balls so far, do not join the club.

Clearly this is going to be a problem. Clearly she intends to ruin your friendship with him. This isn't a matter of her not understanding that it's rude. This is an issue of her directly trying to fuck up your friendship with him. It's either you or her and at this point I think you are going to lose your friend regardless. So, either keep the TV or give it back without a base. DO NOT BE HER BITCH, SHE ALREADY HAS A BITCH. You are going to be pissed off when you give this shit back with the base and then lose him as a friend on top of it. I don't care how much money you have, we're talking about principles here dammit!

Slave Famous is correct. Your best friend wants that TV back for using or selling. He is blaming it on his girlfriend.

Scenario 1: Friend's girlfriend's brother does not feel properly accommodated with a 30-inch television. He actually complains about it. Friend's girlfriend cares about her brother's petty complaint. Friend's girlfriend recalls TV gift from 18 months ago. Friend's girlfriend has the nerve to pester her boyfriend about getting it back.

Scenario 2: Friend wants TV back. Friend has to come up with way to ask for it back without looking bad.

Maybe there's something about entertainment/story-telling that makes us so quick to overlook Occam's razor.

Also, stereotypes. Use your steroetypes, people, but use them wisely. I know all us girls are horrible "slutnose" bitches, but you seriously think we'd go all selfish for a TV...for our brother? Is there a gift certificate for shoes stuck to it somewhere? BECAUSE WE LOOOOVE SHOES!

For sure, but the more likely scenario is she has an issue with him/their friendship...that's opposed to the friend wanting the TV back for selling/etc when a)jeepin4X4 would know what ends up happening with the tv, so doubtful on the selling or using somewhere else, and b)he can get another tv from work in the near future

^yeah, it's definitely not for selling/pawning. He's not like that. It's mostly A) to get one over on me/ our friendship because she probably thinks I freeloaded a TV from "them". She's had it out for me for a long time, sure I tried to talk since into him at first but since then have stayed completely out of their way. and B) to pamper her poor brother who has nowhere else to go.

he already took her in as a charity case, and was oblivious, so i'm sure this is nothing.

Ha. I hear you, but in this case it might not be about a TV, it may be about establishing control and having someone wrapped around their finger. So to answer the question, yeah. Women have done worse for less.

it's really a lose/lose situation for you at this point. your friend *gave* it to you right? not just let you *borrow* it and just never got it back or seemingly didn't care. he verbally gave it to you right?

Give them the TV and the stand and count it as their wedding gift.

You are a complete pussy if you give him the stand. HE DID NOT GIVE YOU THE STAND. Give him back ONLY what he gave you. It's ridiculous you're even giving the TV back but I'd be damned if I'd also lose the stand in this ridiculous situation.

I predict within three years of this marriage you will have zero contact with this guy anymore.

Hey! I was just in a similar situation!

I let someone BORROW something indefinitely. About six months went by and I couldn't get the guy to return it to me. At that point he felt entitled to it so I had to take it from him. Now I'M the asshole.

^^ yes you are. You either

A) give a person the object
B) loan the object for a set period of time agreed upon by both parties
C) do nothing

Didn't realize this was a difficult concept...

Why would he keep the stand? Maybe he could resell it? I'm still for give it all, and be done. Last thin I want is a stand I can't use for anything else sitting around reminding me of how some cunt ruined mine and a friends relationship. Unless it is a universal wall mount, then I'd keep it.

If he's planning on buying a TV he will need a stand. It is HIS stand and the friend has zero claim to it. Besides, I know women like this fiance and experience tells me these two won't be friends for much longer.

wat? to me, lending someone an item (regardless of for how long or even with no time-period stated), and straight-up giving it to them, are two totally different things

if somebody lends me something for a long time, I'm just grateful that I get to keep it for so long...I don't start thinking it's mine

granted, I've occasionally been "lent" video games and other items which the person never asked for back...but if they were to come and ask, even like five years later, I would give the shit back immediately and be like "Thanks again, dude"

The problem is it often seems people never succinctly say, "I am lending this to you for now. I will need it back. Please don't fuck it up or lose it kthx,"and you end up with shitty situations like these.

I believe this is a ploy from the fiance to put a wedge in your friendship. Give the tv back and sell him the stand if he wants it. But your next step is to visit and watch tv with your frend as much as possible. Become friends with the deadbeat brother if you have to. I'm sure there is an xbox somewhere in the house. She will hate it and you win.

I think you are at least getting a blow job from the dude's fiance.

1. It's her brother that wants the TV. Let her give you something for the trouble.
2. She must be pretty good at it if she's got your boy is asking for something back that he gave you.
3. It might break them up, and then you'd have your friend back, although, you may not want a frind w/ no backbone.

i think you guys are confusing the "stand". it's not a universal tv stand, but the plastic "base" that usually comes with a new tv that allows it to sit. so yeah, after giving this tv back i would have zero use for it.

give it back? what a flaccid penis. the correct thing to do is say no and keep it. you just fucked yourself and your friend for letting a shitbag fiancée and her deadbeat brother walk all over you. grow some balls and brains and put this bitch in her place instead of feeding her fury.

You should tell him that the least he can do since he's getting this tv back from you after so long is to lend you the 30" box tv in the spare bedroom until you can get a new one. Then once you get outside throw it on their lawn and beat it down Office Space style. After that's done and they're standing there watching you, flippantly toss the bat to the ground and call the fiance a cunt and if your friend ever wants to be your friend again he knows how to find you.

If it was me, fuck if they get that shit back without paying me $150. It's not like you bought the stand for fun. It was necessary to use the tv you were given. I would much rather have an accident loading it up than give some douchebag a gift back. if I'm going to lose $150, might as well enjoy pissing the douche and bitch off.
