page 2 of video games. 5/24/2011 10:08:24 AM |

I'd say that I've easily played over 100 hours, possibly 200. However, I get 10 weeks or so off for summer, two weeks for winter, and a week in the spring. I'm mostly nocturnal when I don't work, so I spend a lot of the long hours up gaming.
Video games represent a hobby/interest for me. I read about games and gaming culture pretty much daily. I went to PAX this year and the year before. I'm fascinated by any possible applications they have for positively affecting our world (a la Reality Is Broken)
Still, in addition to these hours gaming, I read 70+ books last year, and I'm working on that same goal this year. I also play board games, and I'm learning tabletop. I cook. I dance. I write.
In short, I don't think the number of hours one spends gaming says anything particularly insightful other than how one prefers to spend his free time. 5/24/2011 10:32:21 AM |

I do a lot of things with free time. I work out, I go out to meet friends for drinks, I play video games, I watch TV, I play tennis/basketball, I browse the internet, I go to the pool.
I'm thoroughly uninterested in whether or not other people think those activities are cool or proper. I like all of them.

I like how the one guy says he reads, dances and cooks, then the next guy says he watches tv, surfs the internet and goes to the pool.

I'm not sure I could put the hobby aspect of gaming any better than Byrn Stuff did. I've also used gaming as a social activity. My MMO days made me a lot of friends that I still retain. I've made some really good friends at PAX (I went to the last four), and none of us are defined by our gaming. Of course through both those things I met some omgsad people, but they were a minority. I do think it's funny how quickly this thread took a defensive tone, though, with most assuming their response would get them judged. Haters gonna hate.

I identify as a gamer as well, but with the exception of one or two very few of my "real life" friends are gamers and I still manage to spend time with them regularly. Gaming is no longer a minority activity, especially if you count casual/social games.
In the end its all about balance. There are plenty of reasons why gamers have the stereotype that we do, but those people are in the minority nowadays. Most "gamers" are as well adjusted as the non-gamer. 5/24/2011 11:02:03 AM |

Heh, I've acknowledged that I've easily given months if it not years of my life to gaming and other pursuits.
In the book Sum, the other presents several views of possible afterlives. In one you relive your entire life in collation. Imagine two decades of sleep. 10 years eating. 40 years where you do little but blink. Then comes the years of every gaming experience you've ever had.

I probably game at least an hour a day on average. I'll go days without playing but then play for like three hours on a weekend or something. 5/24/2011 11:39:59 AM |

GT5 logs all the driving you do. I'm sitting at around 48,000 miles since the beginning of December. However two thirds of that (i'm guessing) is from automated races where I'm not actually sitting in front of the console. 5/24/2011 12:06:39 PM |

I do think that I have spent too much time on videogames. I used to play A LOT. I wish I had learned guitar or read more instead while in high school.
I gave up videogames for lent to focus on guitar but took up cooking for some strange reason. Just in a few weeks my cooking has improved drastically. I work out a ton but still can't find time to play the guitar. I guess I have become disinterested.
However, videogames will always be my first love and the thing I go to when I want to unwind. When I was in college I had no money and was super stressed from school. Used videogames where cheap and fun and frequently a social event. I didn't have my parents filling my pockets so I could drink at PBs or EV every Thursday then study for my PRT or communciations exam for 15 mins in the morning.
Actually I guess I could have afforded PBs. I was def a nerd.

Depends on the game, but you can go to a site like this. http://www.bfbc2.eu/
The first spike you see is last summer and the second is from this summer.

I dont have a smart phone, i hardly interact with my computer outside of work, no mp3 player, and a very short attention span. I really have never enjoyed video games and didnt play them much at all growing up. I had a Mario Cart phase in college, but that is the only game that i have more than 10 hours of playing.
i just dont really enjoy them, meh 5/24/2011 1:33:13 PM |

I've been playing a lot of Mario Cart lately.
I'm a little ashamed, now.
To be fair, I've been trying to be a bit of a "non-gamer" lately, so you got me....

@grimx My last month was:
Quote : | "49 hrs Borderlands (360) 13 hrs Prey (360) 7 hrs Portal 2 (360) 2 hrs L.A. Noire (360)" |
About 10 hours of Borderlands was hiding on a box at the end of Claptrap Robolution to farm the absurd low drop rate achievement items.
This has by far been my heaviest gaming month in a couple years but I definitely need to revise my 100 hrs/yr number up a little.5/24/2011 3:11:42 PM |
