it's 120 miles. Gorman Street is exit 295 and it counts up to 420 which is College Road. you aren't really out of Raleigh til 315, you're in Fuquay by 328, Newton Grove 340, Warsaw (good exit with tons of food) at 364, Wallace at 385, Castle Hayne at 405, 140 Bypass to Highway 17 at exit 416.... there are smaller towns in between but these are the best for food (all have Smithfields)
I don't think it's that boring. I like that I can literally count miles and time within 3 minutes when I'll get to wherever. It's a 70 so if you do 80 you'll get there in about an hour and a half. Not a bad trip at all. The 77 miles to Greenville have less "civilization" if you've ever made that trip.
[Edited on May 25, 2011 at 3:39 PM. Reason : each exit corresponds to a mile marker. i.e. exit 295 is 45 miles from exit 340*] 5/25/2011 3:38:17 PM |

i regularly make that drive from southwest Raleigh in 2 hours, i believe his time. I've only gone over that time if I live at rush hour on Friday and hit traffic until the 70 bypass. I speed, but I'm rarely the fastest person on the road heading down.
also, i won this thread on page 1

I dated a girl at UNCW when I was at State. I would try to beat my previous time every time I drove down there. Fairly sure I broke the 1:20 mark several times. I usually kept it between 80-85...but fuckers when 90+ on the regular. So it wasn't difficult to get there under an hour and a half. 5/25/2011 5:03:25 PM |

Oh God I hate that shit. Had to go through there in April, doing it again in 2 weeks, by the time those go away near Petersburg I find myself looking left at every damn gap in the trees.
As to the OP, it's not a huge deal. Probably longest you'll go is 15-20 minutes without an exit (there's very little immediately before Wilmington), and almost all the exits have gas, food, or both.5/25/2011 5:50:16 PM |

The last time I went from Wilmington to Raleigh there was an accident that must have shut the highway down completely. We were stuck not moving at all for at least an hour. I finally got to the point where I just pulled off at the nearest exit, took narrow country roads, and just made it up as I went to get home. No map, no gps. Still better than that traffic jam.
I hate that highway.

The part between Kinston and New Bern is soooooooooo boring to me...granted it's 70mph....but it's a long stretch of NOTHING.

the stretch between Raleigh and Wilmington becomes quite familiar because you see the same thing over and over (farm land, random nice house, trailer, nothing, farm land, random nice house....you get the point). i don't get how a 120 mile drive can induce such anxiety in someone but to each is own. i could see if you had to drive 1200 miles by yourself - but not a trip that takes less than 2 hours.

and that is if your flight is on time plus you'd be taking a prop jet/puddle jumper.
