I'm tempted to stop watching this show on principle, just because I'm fucking tired of the annoying teenage child character stereotype

unless a dinosaur eats him, then I'll never miss an episode

Pretty awesome I thought. I'll be watching it, I'm also afraid it won't get past 1 season but it seems to have a lot of Lost elements so maybe it can capture Lost's audience and succeed. If not, hopefully season 1 is good at least.

Only 2 other potential planets that can support life in our system and they are both pretty hostile to life and would be almost impossible to meaningfully alter within a reasonable time frame. And getting to other systems really is impossible.

they are traveling 65 million years back in time to another dimension

But, this doesn't really bother me.

I liked it overall though, i'm excited to see where to season goes.

Feels like their colony was stupidly planned out.

They have the factory technology to mass produce vehicles, weapons, ammo, medicine, et cetera, but not the ability to retrieve ore except from that one quarry?

Teenage motif is really annoying, wish they'd taken a different angle.

Also, the 6'ers just feels like a LOST plot WITH DINOSAURS. Especially when they were looking at the formulas on the rocks.

I just know it's going to be Lost-esque. SPLINTER GROUP IS NOT WHAT IT SEEMS. OTHER FORCES AT PLAY. PROTAGONISTS QUESTION THE MORAL CREDIBILITY OF THEIR HOST GROUP. WHO IS THE REAL VILLAIN? Et cetera.

The people fighting and dinosaur fighting for the last hour gave me a serious headache.

It needs less fighting and more shirtless weeding.

I agree about Stephen Lang, I was worried he would be an exact copy of his character from Avatar

and I also agree about the son being annoying as shit. I'll be watching more, theres a lot to build off of. I'm glad theres not a bunch of bad CGI dinosaurs running around in every scene

^ Yeah that's true, they should have at least shown a dead dino near her to show she got mangled but still killed the slasher.

And speaking of, why do their guns suck so much? I don't think they killed or even seriously wounded a single dinosaur the whole time.

so, unless i missed something...

it's a one way trip to 85 million years ago. then nothing can come back through the fracture from past to present. it's a different location/dimension/timestream because the probe they sent back was never found. they expected the probe to survive intact for 85 million years?

when jason and taylor were hiking up to see the view of the colony, talking about the 6ers, jason asked if they had cheated the lottery and if taylor had asked someone (couldn't make it out) about it. taylor says he hasn't asked because he doesn't know who in the future he can trust.

so they can communicate with 2149 earth? why wouldn't they call for serious military support to defeat/control the 6ers (like, at least hinted in the episode that the 6ers certainly wouldn't be much a threat after the next pilgrimage)? hopefully this isn't writing on a rock, or another probe thing.

overall, ignoring minor shit like armored dinosaurs, wooden security fence, dinosaur chewing kid's leg with dull teeth, haha dialogue, seems like an alright show and a premise with potential.

I thought he said "who from the future" by which I think he means people who have recently come from the future and might know something.

I don't think there is any 2 way communication, or if there is we don't know about it yet.

I haven't seen the end yet. Had to put the babies to bed around 8ish. I did enjoy the first hour though (once they finally got their butts back in time).

I mean, despite the temporal handwavium (hopefully that'll end the technobabble because it'd seem out of place in a show like this) and the way it vaguely reminded me of old PTEN pilots (like Hercules:The Legendary Journeys or the Babylon 5 pilot, but particularly Island City [if anyone else remembers that]) I enjoyed what I saw.

I wonder if it'll be on Hulu or if I'll have to find other ways to see the rest of the episode.

there has to be some sort of communication back to 2149, or else Shannon would have never brought it up. My guess is it can only happen when the portal opens, which doesn't seem to be a regular event. So there must be a way to send communication out during one portal and then you wait X amount of time for the next portal to receive an answer.

Did they make it clear if they are producing their weapons and transports on Terra Nova or if they came through the portal?

That sounds about right (as far as communication goes). I'd guess that they could theoretically open the portal from their side but they don't have the equipment or power source set up to effectively punch a hole in the universe on a consistent basis.

Plus they briefly alluded to the trips being scheduled. I don't remember exactly, but either when Commander Taylor was initially interrogating Sheriff Daddy or shortly afterwards one of his subordinates made a reference to the next incoming group already being scheduled.

As far as communication, well Stargate already covered the idea that when you punch that sort of hole in the universe certain signals might be able to go both ways instead of just the normal one-way communication. Not that that means anything for Terra Nova, but the idea's already out there.

Angry Teenage Male needs to get over it quick, or get eaten or shot sometime this season so he'll at least be somewhat useful. An extended story arc of him falling in love on Terra Nova and accepting it is going to get tedious really quickly.

I liked Pre-historic Lisa Simpson. It probably helps that she looks a lot like a cousin of mine.

Sheriff Daddy needs to lighten up. But I guess time in jail will do that to you. One thing I didn't catch, how long was he in jail? If he was in jail for an extended period of time where was his daughter the whole time? I didn't quite catch what they did with her after finding her in the crawlspace.

he was in jail for two years. There was a time jump and a "Two Years Later" caption right when Doc was visiting him in his cell. the exposition never really said what, if anything, happened to Zoe as Jim got the worst of it for assaulting the cop.

I thought they made it clear that it was a one way trip, returns aren't possible. It also doesn't really look like a "portal" more like they just zap something and it's transported back. I assumed someone carries the schedule for upcoming pilgrimages with them when they are sent back.

If they explain how two way communication works then sure, but right now I'm skeptical.

I don’t think the regular rifles would do too much, and im guessing they are trying to be eco friendly by preferring to chase away dinosaurs rather than just brutally mutilate all of them.

I wonder though if they can choose how far to go back, or if only certain times are achievable. It seems to make more sense to go back after all the dinos are dead, when the mammals started to take over things.

I was pretty confused at the end.

I didn't understand what the 6ers were saying about the rock at the end. Were they saying that Taylor's son did the drawings to drive taylor crazy? What do the things on the rocks represent?

also, can they communicate with the future? i can't gather an answer from reading your responses.

^^ Regular assault rifles would certainly kill those slashers quickly enough.

^ Yeah Taylor's apparently had a falling out with his son, who has apparently figured out something big about Terra Nova and is making these drawings just to show his father how close he is to cracking the secret. And apparently they can communicate with the future a little bit only when there's a new pilgrimage coming through.

THIS

That was my number one fear going in, I figured they would try to saturate it with as much CGI as possible to try and make up for a sub par show. Aside from the giant centipede on his hand I think the CGI looked pretty good. I'm impressed with the visuals for just a standard network TV show. I gotta say I was skeptical going in but I really liked it.

I'm pleased that the military guy from Avatar is playing a good guy this time. Stupid rebellious/predictable teen shows up in just about every show, I don't get why they keep doing it but I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. I'm sure he will inevitably fall in love with the new girl and at some point his old girlfriend will come through the portal to make some stupid drama that nobody will care about.

As for the Sixers, I have a wild idea. Maybe all this time travel ISN'T on a different timeline and the Sixers are actually ancestors of people trying to stop something from happening? Maybe the equations on the rock are the dude's son trying to mathematically figure out what will affect the future?

^^

based on what?

it took 86 bullets to kill Tyke the elephant when it went on a rampage, and it took a while for it to die, and dinosaurs seem like they would be heartier than this relatively small elephant.

The only thing I could think of would be that the slicers have a lot thicker skin and possibly some sort of natural armor. Elephants didn't evolve in a land surrounded by constant threat from larger predators so they never had to develop anything like that to survive but these little dinosaurs had all sorts of shit trying to eat them all the time.

Still, bullets from an assault rifle should have no problem penetrating any natural shielding that they have developed.

They definitely aren't playing him as a "good guy". If anything he seems to be the same character as the actor played in Avatar, just without the genocidal inclinations. Of course, without those it seems like more of a dick wad military boss role

Character..... Actor...... Character actor? What?

/ my iPad auto-corrected dickhead into "dick wad". I guess that counts as "technically correct."

Taylor was portrayed in a good light in the pilot, but all of the signs are there that he's an autocratic maniac. I'm sure that will be a big focal point in the near future.

Also, 9.2 million viewers for the pilot. Not outstanding numbers (2.5 men had 20 million) but a good showing for Fox.

Didn't they say something about how they needed to get a certain type of bullet because their normal ones (tranqs?) didn't puncture the skin of one of the dinosaurs?

^^two different weapons. during the rescue they were using tranqs. Taylor made it clear to aim for the soft underbelly of the slasher for the tranquilizer to hit. You could tell it was a different weapon when Jim fired at the one behind his son. The kids were using standard weaponry while trapped in the transport.

^^ I fully expect to see those dinos in stores soon. They reused the Tyco designs once before in the 90's and not rereleasing them (if the show's successful) would be foolish.

I had the T-Rex. I still haven't found it's equal in the toy aisle.
