Nice blurb in the AP article:

My thoughts exactly! Sooooo sad!! He was such a hero and a Wolfpack Legend who bled RED and WHITE faithfully. R.I.P Lorenzo Charles!! Definitely sending prayers to his family during this tough time.

great post. i have to compare that to a post i read on ESPN today that was just horrid and full or missing words.

I was 9 years old, a budding state fan, we all had to watch that game at my uncle's house. My dad was in Saudi Arabia at the time. The leadup to the game by the network just showed Houston dunking like crazy on everyone, as if that's the only shot allowed in basketball. And I remember vividly saying to my mom :"this game's going to end on alley-oop". I just thought it would be state getting creamed by 25pts or so. I kept thinking.. how are we gonna beat anyone who has a guy called: Clyde "The Glide" Drexler?

I still remember the final sequence of events even better than the replays. Unimaginable joy. We immediately left Dunn and went to Raleigh. It was a madhouse. Toilet paper was everywhere. Bon-fires glowed in every direction. Drunk college kids way up in trees and light posts. And Lorenzo after he dunked it, looked as if he had done something wrong, maybe he thought he was going to get called for goal-tending or he didn't beat the clock...

the more I think about it, the more I realize that we need a statue of him/that dunk in front of Reynolds

Anyone remember that T-shirt that listed the first names of the five players?

Sidney &
Thurl &
Cozell &
Lorenzo &
Dereck

or something like that.

I've been trying to find it unsuccessfully.

We need statues of that, Jimmy V, Sloan, Case and Thompson outside of Reynolds and the RBC. All we have right now for our basketball program is our history and for whatever reason we aren't doing all we can to honor it.

I love that there will be a Lorenzo Charles commemorative patch on the jersey's this year though.

^^ Go to ESPN.com and download the podcast. You won't be able to SEE what they say, but you could still hear it.

kornheiser talked about it for like 10 minutes on his radio show, if you really want to hear what he has to say about it.

I listen to it every day. The podcast delay is ridiculous from ESPN 980 here in DC though. I don't get it from ESPN.com.

The full-length show is split into two 40-minute files, which is great because that's exactly how I long I walk my dog twice a day.

Dude was definitely beastly, and a true champion.

Most of us weren't alive when he played, but he was a legend here, and it's a sad event.

Sports Center had the dunk as the #2 most dramatic moment in sports history today. #1 was the 1980 USA men's hockey team beating the Soviet Union in the semi-finals of the Olympics.
