i have no idea, but in communism i would imagine so. still, he's huge over there, and should have a shitload of money.

i remember reading somewhere that the "haves" generally keep a higher percentage of their money in China, but i don't care enough to find it or research it.

i thought there was some condition that China would only let him play in the US if they got some high percentage of his salary, he's not your average taxpayer

i'm sure he's got plenty of money though, and i don't feel like scanning through a bunch of wikipedia sources for the details

I think sports going down might be part of the economy's full collapse. People always make jokes about how we could never have another civil war because everyone would have to pause for sports but sports are almost off the table.

Economic pressure is the cause of these problems and making it harder for each side to compromise. The same thing is happening in our government. Hell, our government BARELY avoided a lockout. How can we expect these guys to. NFL and NBA may be gone while college football is dealing with huge allegation dealing with player benefits. In tough economic times, players are coming from decreasingly good family situations and in need of more and more help.

The economic trouble is fucking up everything.

That might be plausible if these were the first labor struggles in the history of American sports

A few questions for you to consider:

1.Have the NBA and NFL ever both locked out at the same time?
2.Were the previous lockouts basically a battle over who would lose pay or were they actually a battle of who would take the fair share of revenue increases?
3.Were the previous lockouts also at economic downturns?

If you can rule all three of those out then fine.

Tree is definitely right yao had to give up like 70% of his salary to play in the NBA. I don't recall the exact percentage but pretty sure it was more than half

"Reports have pegged Williams’s salary between $200,000 and $350,000 a month, or $2 million to $3.5 million for the 10-month Turkish league season. Raznatovic said that Williams, 27, would get between $1 million and $5 million, plus a car, housing and the tax breaks associated with playing overseas. He will also be provided with a security guard, driver and personal assistant, all of them available 24 hours a day. Ataman later told SI.com that Williams’s deal would be paid for by a sponsor."

i'm shocked more young players don't play overseas. it's a pretty sweet deal.

my ex gf used to live with John Goldsberry's girlfriend in college. he was a PG at UNCW, some of you may remember an NCAA tournament game where he lit it up from 3. anyways, out of college he was offered to play in Germany. they gave him $750,000 for 2 years, paid for his apartment, gave him a car to use, and had a team concierge-type guy always available. they even paid for plane tickets to come back to visit the US.

after he played out his contract, another German club offered him a couple million for a few years. my point is, the perks are awesome, plus you get to live in another country for a while. some people aren't open to that kind of experience, but i would think some guys coming out of college would try something different for a few years.

whether or not there's a season, Javaris Crittendon almost certainly won't be playing, he's been charged with MURDER:

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/6899974/former-nba-player-javaris-crittenton-charged-murder

Quote :
"ATLANTA -- Police said late Friday that former NBA player Javaris Crittenton, who was once suspended by the league over guns in the locker room, has been charged with murder after a woman was shot on an Atlanta street.

Police spokesman Carlos Campos said police have secured a murder warrant for the arrest of Crittenton, who played at Georgia Tech, in connection with the shooting death of 22-year-old Jullian Jones on Aug. 19. Campos said Crittenton is not in custody and is wanted.

Atlanta police Maj. Keith Meadows told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Friday night that Crittenton is believed to be in the Los Angeles area. He said the FBI is involved in the investigation.

Jones, a mother of four, was walking with a group of people on the city's southwest side when a dark-colored SUV drove by and she was shot by someone inside the vehicle, police said.

Investigators say they don't believe the woman was the intended target. Campos said the motive appears to be retaliation for a robbery in April, in which Crittenton was a victim, Campos said in a statement.

Messages left for an agent who has represented Crittenton were not immediately returned Friday night.

Crittenton most recently played in the NBA with the Washington Wizards and was involved in a gun altercation with Gilbert Arenas. He is on the roster of the NBDL's Dakota Wizards.

Crittenton didn't play last season because of an ankle injury. He was given a 38-game suspension by the NBA after he and Arenas acknowledged bringing guns into the locker room following a dispute stemming from a card game on a team flight.

Crittenton pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge on Jan. 25, 2010, and received probation. He wasn't re-signed by the Wizards.

The Charlotte Bobcats signed Crittenton to a non-guaranteed contract before last season but he was waived Oct. 15.

Crittenton was the 19th overall pick by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2007. He played little with Los Angeles and was sent to Memphis in the Pau Gasol deal his rookie year. He was traded to Washington in December 2008.

Crittenton averaged 5.3 points and 1.8 assists in 113 NBA games."

" NBA players delivered a resounding but risky response to one more ultimatum from NBA commissioner David Stern: See you in court.

The players' association rejected the league's latest proposal for a new labor deal Monday and began disbanding, paving the way for a yet-to-be filed lawsuit and throwing the 2011-12 season into jeopardy.

Negotiating went nowhere, so now the union is going away."

What kind of convoluted asshole question is this? If you're a fan of the league, you care about them not having a season. If you only post in NBA threads to shit on the league of overpaid thugs that don't play defense, while simultaneously singing the praises of the college game featuring scrappy players, maximum effort and 53-49 finals, than of course you don't care. You're probably happy that your sportscenter highlights won't be dominated by countless clips of overgrown gorillas soaring above the rim and grabbing their genitals in celebration.

Given that there's maybe a dozen NBA fans here on a good day, its not surprising that there hasn't been a huge outcry. As long as there's football on TV, basketball, for most of us, plays second fiddle. We'll only start to really care and make a fuss come January and February when there's nothing on TV but CSI and Purdue-Wisconsin.

Besides, 82 games is too much anyway. Every football game is important. In professional basketball, no one really starts paying attention until after Christmas. I still think they'll savage some kind of season, and I would be upset, but not devastated, if they cancel the whole year.

It's really surprising after the baseball and hockey problems after their post seasons that either sides think that not getting a deal done won't be horrendously damaging to future earnings.
