Look, I understand there are accidents. I understand it's dangerous.
I'm not saying that you shouldn't were a helmet. I am saying you should have the freedom to wear a helmet if you don't feel safe. I'm am saying you should have the freedom to wear leather if you don't feel safe. You should also have the freedom to NOT wear one. It should be your responsibility. Not anyone elses.
If you wipe out on a bike, you're more likely to die than if you get in a car accident. It doesn't mean that we should take bikes off the road. Likewise, you're more likely to die without a helmet than with one on, but it doesn't mean we have to sacrifice our freedom just because someone that isn't you is afraid of death.

NADIA: For days, Mumpy would listen quietly as the elders discussed how only an eye surgery could save her father's vision and a kidney transplant her brother's life. But both surgeries were beyond the family's meagre means. So, Mumpy hit upon a plan, which to her 12-year-old mind seemed the answer to all troubles. She would kill herself, which would save the dowry, too, and her organs would give her loved ones back their lives.
Mumpy did stick to her plan. But the suicide note in which she had scribbled down her wishes was found the day after she was cremated." |

You're not just screwing yourself. Riding without a helmet places a burden on society. What's going to happen when your family can't afford the $Texas medical bills? Who's going to support them financially after losing your income? How can they afford funeral expenses? What about lost work time while they recover from losing a loved one?
Dying in a grisly, preventable accident doesn't just harm you. If you believe that then you're being a selfish prick. 7/7/2011 3:20:24 PM |

+1 for no law. I hate nanny laws. If there was no law, would I still wear a helmet? Sure, I'm too pretty to die. If you're not going to require full-face kevlar helmets, back braces, full leathers, steel boots, gloves, windshields and throttle governers, why require anything?
I've heard no consistent argument for the law existing. Protecting your face from debris so you don't get hit and fly into oncoming traffic? Why does the DOT allow open-face and half-shell helmets? Decreasing the load on the health system after a motorcycle wreck? Intuition would tell me that helmets would provide an insignificant benefit. (^ if you have that much to lose then the adult decision would be to stay off a bike altogether) Why allow motorcycles at all?
Is it anyone else's business whether my gf keeps the baby? Nope. Whether I allow smoking in my private bar? Nope. Whether my mom marries her partner? Nope. Whether I decide to wear a helmet? Nope. Get off my lawn with that shit. If thousands upon thousands of experienced bikers that are well aware of the risks choose to ride hatless, there is zero reason not to let them.

When you hit someone with your hand, you cross the line When you spray paint someone else's property, you cross the line When you trespass on privately owned property, you cross the line*
What do all these have in common? You are invading someone else's private space.

GeniuSxBoY is ruining a good point.
We, as Americans, should have the right to do whatever we want so long as it does not impede on our fellow citizens' rights.
From drinking chocolate milk at lunch to shooting up heroin in the comfort of our own home. Wearing seatbelts and helmets isn't going to make you or anyone else on the road drive an better/worse. If GeniuSxBoY falls off his motorcycle, cracks his skull and dies, its no sweat of anyone elses back. 7/7/2011 4:40:04 PM |

So then you should or shouldn't be required to put a child in a car seat? Cause you're affecting someone else's life but there's only harm if you're in an accident...
Or what about DUIs? If you dont get in an accident you don't hurt anyone else but you have the potential to hurt someone else through your actions.
I'm not trying to provoke you. Just trying to figure out the lines you're drawing. 7/7/2011 5:27:44 PM |

Well, children are underage and aren't able to think for themselves. I think 16 or 18 olds -- children becoming sexually responsible according to society -- are well qualified for choosing to wear or not wear a seatbelt. So yes, to protect children under 16 or 18, a law should exist for seatbelts.
Ideally, it should be upto the parents to be responsible for protecting their kid. If the child dies from the idiocy, negligence of the parents, no offense, but God is the one that gave that kid to an idiot.
Sucks to be that kid and it does suck to be a lot of the kids in the world who have shitty parents or are born in place like doo-doo yugoslavia lol.
I'm not saying you can't help kids! I'm saying it's none of your business. You can try to make it your business, but don't get butthurt when they tell you to fuck off.

The rules of the road should be "ride at your own risk".
However, if you actually get into an accident and it's proven to be your fault (guilty), you should face supremely tougher punishments than someone who wasn't drinking and driving.
If someone sober hits YOU, and you're DUI, you should NOT be ticketed for anything. I think it's ludicrous. Even with the DUI laws in place, I know 7 out of 10 people who drink, also drive themselves home, and manage to make it. Let society be responsible for stopping drunk drivers, but don't hold them accountable for stopping drunk drivers. It's not your fault for him doing what he's doing.
Of course, with drinking and driving, if it gets out of hand, it needs to be moderated just like trolls on a forum need to be moderated once in a while. But just don't let a few fools ruin it for everyone else.
