New York is one of the most expensive cities in the world, people in the city have no problem spending money regularly, or did you not happen to notice the crowd of people standing around outside the restaurant?
Yeah, it's better quality than most other places...doesn't mean it's not tourist food 7/13/2011 11:14:51 AM |

There are different types of tourists. Theres the type that go to sbarro or some random place in midtown, spend all their money on traveling or shopping and then theres the foodie tourist. I'm the foodie tourist and only go to the best places in every town. Those places are usually loaded with other foodie tourists because locals only go to them on special occasions/staycations.
Its not practical to go all thee way to little italy past tons of good pizza only to wait a few hours and pay a lot more for pizza on a regular basis.
Don't make lombardies out to be some gimmick that only attracts tourists because its not. It attracts tourists because its the first, best, and has been consistently rated as amazing.
Also its pretty clear that many new yorkers and you in this thread are hard line hipsters and anything that is popular can't possibly be good. http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-june-1-2011/me-lover-s-pizza-with-crazy-broad?xrs=share_copy listen to him

He talks about how New Yorkers eat at inferior places all the time for convenience but if you want to show somebody the best of ny then lombardies is where you want to take them. Not that all the other places are bad but if you only had one shot then there or some of the other coal oven places is where you would go. 7/13/2011 11:55:22 AM |

Jesus dude, take a fucking second to read and think before you spend any more time typing out any more diarrhea
Stewart mentions Lombardi's, Totonno's, Grimaldi's, Arturo's, JOHN'S, JOE'S, and some other places. Two of which (I've capitalized them for you in case you missed it again) I mentioned on the last page to which you replied that they, along with Ray's, were like the bbq chains of the south.
I have in no way suggested I don't like Lombardi's, that it is any kind of gimmick, or doesn't have good food. I've simply stated that it's the place where New Yorkers typically take tourists who want to feel like they are eating good NY pizza. But MOST of the time, regular New Yorkers go elsewhere because (A) They like to avoid lines and (B) most New Yorkers would NOT consider Lombardi's traditional New York pizza, regardless of whether or not it was the first pizza place. 7/13/2011 12:08:51 PM |

Fair enough. You were saying something different than what I was saying. I was saying it was the best in nyc while you were saying it wasn't traditional. Its clearly not traditional nyc pizza. Also, in the context of him mentioning the later places. He was listing the best places first and then he was like you could at least have gone to a place like joes or johns.
A is convenience B is pretty much quality

There was a period when I went to Arturo's like once a week. They have a super creamy and delicious bolognese sauce that's phenomenal, and a different (yes, different) "meat sauce" that has a really great homemade quality to it. Between those and the pizza I guess that's why I was there all the time.
Also they have awesome t-shirts...small Arturo's logo on the front, on the back it just says "Eat Pizza" over a kid's drawing of a pizza...explaining it now it sounds stupid, oh well
Also, not to beat a dead horse here, but I found this quick debate while looking for a picture of the t-shirt I just described

i went to ny for 3 days and had a really hard time sleeping, so i'm not sure i had fun but we got a pass that let us visit the top of the rock, the empire state building, the met, MOMA, museum of natural history and take the boat ride to the statue of liberty for like, 75$ each? that kept us pretty busy. one night we walked from the boat to central park through times square one night and stopped by the giant macy's (though it was christmas season, so that was mostly to look at the window displays). we spent another evening just walking around central park. 5/2/2012 2:27:39 PM |

Last weekend a buddy of mine was here so I took him and his girl on an unofficial food tour of some of my favorite places...There were 4 of us and hit 11 different places (all walking) so we just got something to share at each place. In the end it took just under 5 hours and cost everyone around $20 each in food. They had a great time, as did I since there were all favorite restaurants of mine. Here was our order:
Baked by Melissa on 14th (tiny cupcakes) S'Mac (mac n' cheese only) Pommes Frites (fries with tons of sauce choices) Crif Dogs (hot dogs) Puddin' NYC (wasn't on the plan, just walked in...they have pudding) Luke's Lobster (great lobster, crab, and shrimp rolls) Katz Deli (pastrami, corned beef, matzah ball soup) Sugar Sweet Sunshine (banana pudding) Rice to Riches (rice pudding) Shanghai Cafe (soup dumpling - I actually like Joe's a tiny bit better, but it's usually a madhouse)
We then walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, but that's a commitment after doing all of the above. I wanted to throw a pizza place in, but by the time we got around to Pomodoro everyone was pretty full, plus we just did pizza as a meal another day. Nonetheless, Artichoke would fit in right before S'Mac, Pomodoro right after Sugar Sweet Sunshine, or just pick some other place...

going to the city Thurs to next Tues. I've already checked out this thread and the ones linked on the first page, and we've got a LONG list of places to visit and restaurants to check out, some of which I'd classify as "touristy" but that's OK.
flying in EARLY thursday, then we'll be using dial 7 instead of a cab to get from LGA to where we're staying in stuy town
i think there's still a few twwers around lower manhattan, so give me some more places around east village to visit!! 9/11/2012 11:55:36 AM |

and for the people who say its too crowded... you're ignorant and stayed by the tourist traps. In the middle of the week mid day or after 7pm you feel like you own the streets when you wander around. 9/12/2012 8:49:13 AM |

we got back last night, on the tail end of that huge storm system.
walked through central park, saw a tiny fraction of the Met, walked through times square, grand central, diamond district, top of the Rock, meatpacking district, boat tour around Manhattan, 9/11 memorial, battery park (ows lol), washington square/NYU, union square, saw Fuerza Bruta (!!), and walked a LOT around the east village
we hit a few restaurants/bars mentioned in this thread, although we didn't do many of the popular tourist places (Katz, etc)..
it is such a positive contrast to where I live now, and even to Raleigh.. it makes me seriously want to move there I currently live in a town where the population is <6000, i have to drive half an hour to get to a decent bar, and i know NO ONE. compare that to NYC.. there is only one winner.
i'm pretty sure I could talk my fiancee into the move, and she's got a guaranteed job if we do decide to do it...

Top of the Rock - $25 ($25 to go to the top of a building? fuck that)
Empire State Building - $25 (again)
Metropolitan Museum of Art - FREE (whatever price they list is a "suggested donation" so pay what you want)
MOMA - $25 ($14 students) (a little steep - mine was always free w/ my student ID)
Statue of Liberty, Ferry Fee - $17 (the BEST views of the Statue of Liberty are actually from the Staten Island Ferry which is always free - on Liberty Island the views suck and you see much inside the statue)
All told that pass is kind of a deal if you want to go to the top of lots of things. I'd say save your money and walk the Highline. Spend what you save on a dinner or a show in Brooklyn and some drinks.9/23/2012 1:43:05 PM |

Cab from LGA shouldn't be more than $50 and that time of day to UES, you can probably make it under 25 minutes. If you're feeling cheap, the M60 is pretty easy too. 1/22/2013 12:05:47 PM |

WTF are you talking about? It's the CLOSEST airport to Manhattan you twit.
Jesse, from LGA you can take a bus across the triborough bridge into Harlem and go south from there to the UES. Or you can take the bus to the N/W subway line then transfer at Lexington Ave onto the 4,5,6 to get to the UES. Or yeah take a cab which is the faster option.
While there be sure to hit up the Blind Tiger and Peculiar Pub, both on Bleeker. Great beer spots. Astoria Beer Garden is the only original beer garden still around in the city, but it's in Astoria, Qns. The Standard down near the meatpacking district has a pretty sweet Bier Garten of their own, its fairly new. Yeah just walk to 86th street and hop on the express trains (4,5) or go down to 77th and take the 6 (local). If you take express you'll have to transfer to local at 14th street stop, or just hoof it. Not a bad walk.
And of course you can always hop on the L train (at 14th street) and take it a few stops into Williamsburg and visit the Brooklyn Brewery 1/23/2013 10:39:52 AM |
