most certainly, he is a wingnut. But his wingnutism is not inspired by religious devotion.

Not religious in the theological sense. But he does seem to be inspired by the sort of confessional tribalism religions like Christianity promote. I mean, the guy said he was defending Christendom from Muslims. That position makes no sense whatsoever without the societal fractions caused by religious identification.

And I'm not sure theology didn't play a bigger role in his philosophy than what you suggest. I haven't read his manifesto, but those who have report that at some point he makes the common apologist argument that the Enlightenment could not have occurred had it not been for the ideological foundation laid down by Christ and the Christian Church. (Again, though, I haven't read the stupid thing, so I can't verify if he makes this argument or how he goes about it if he does).

All that said, I do think the best way to classify this guy is as a xenophobe.

Exactly. The guy doesn't seem to say "I am doing this for God." He more seems to say "I'm doing this cause I hate Muslims". Moreover, somewhere I saw that he said, specifically, that he was Christian in a cultural identity way and not in a "I have a personal relationship with Jesus" way.

For all I know, the guy is religious as shit. But from what's come out so far, it seems more like he has a white/European/monocultural ideal in mind more than a Christian one. (Hence all the references to "cultural Marxism," whatever the fuck that is)

Maybe lazarus is right in this case, that without religious distinctions this wouldn't have happened. But I have a sneaking suspicion that in a world without religion he still would have been pissed of that brown people were coming to what had been an all-Nordic country for centuries, bringing with them new languages, cultures, foods, etc.

Or maybe it would have happened no matter what. The guy is clearly a lunatic, and just as clearly to my knowledge everyone he killed was a fellow Nordic type.

He's clearly not doing this out of religious zeal. He already stated that he knows such an action goes against fundamental Christian ideals.

Could be. I'm obviously not saying that religion is the only thing that leads to tribalism. But I don't think it's debatable that religion plays a huge, overwhelmingly negative role in the relationship between the West and the Muslim world. The sooner people stop talking about the need to defend Christendom, or, say, the need to outlaw caricatures of Mohammad, the sooner you will see that centuries-old wound begin to heal. Is there any question that if people stopped thinking of themselves as primarily Christians and Muslims, and started thinking of themselves as democrats, or secularists, or just plain old human beings, that at least most of this needless animosity would abate? Or is it true that it all really boils down to economics and that none of that actually matters?

Funny thing is the only thing I would like to see Christendom defended from is the Christian "wolves in sheep's clothing." Also, I'm fairly sure that the Jews need more defense from the Muslims than anyone in Christendom does.

For the love of fuck, can we stop having the same god-damn discussion in every thread. There are far more relevant things to discuss here, like the specific effects of immigration on Scandinavian society.

Well, I guess they don't really need defense, they can defend themselves well enough as it is, but I'm saying historically the conflict is between the Jews and the Muslims. The conflict between the Catholic church and the Muslims wasn't really a conflict it was more like a wholesale slaughter. And they killed/ enslaved a multitude of Jews as well.

Europe's Right Wing: A Nation-by-Nation Guide to Political Parties and Extremist Groups

Some claim Anders Breivik was a lone wolf, a madman, but others see in his manifesto the signs of an ideology that has spread across Europe

I'd argue that it is more a case of scandinavian society's effect on immigration. Scandinavians by and large want to have their cake and eat it too. They are quick to point out how they take in a disproportionate number of immigrants when compared to the rest of the west and how they allocate more funds toward relief than others. However, many of these immigrant populations are relegated to de facto second class citizens. In these previously homogenous societies, the 'natives' openly look down upon and resent immigrants.

Breivik may indeed have been a lone wolf, but there are sizeable populations in each scandinavian country that share his basic views.
