Also, there's a TON more classes being offered this semester at http://www.cs101-class.org/hub.php
which is organized by Stanford professors Andrew Ng (the ml-class prof) and Daphne Koller as part of their competing startup called Coursera. very interesting to see how these two competing startups have evolved separately out of the same Stanford initiative.

Education is huge and hot right now--a lot of the intelligentsia talk about how broken it is and there are many TED talks and books about it. There are Venture Capital firms here in SF that only focus on education.

Unfortunately, the 100% isn't as impressive as it sounds :\

in the 2nd or 3rd week, they had some bugs in their HW grading software, so they changed the policy such that your final grade was determined by the highest of either your average HW grade or your final exam grade

the final exam ended up being super easy, i'm sure there will be many 1000's of 100%s for the course

but i will happily pat myself on the back for being noticed by the staff. hopefully i can score a sweet job out of it

Won't kill higher ed, but would and should change it.

When the US has a population like China's, 4yr undergrads where people dick around on a campus are going to be relegated to the very wealthy, while the rest of the middle class learns via high quality (ideally) heavily computerized system.

Any others? The first one I listed has the biggest variety and number of courses. The coming courses on the first 2 sites are starting between mid September and October, and last for 8 to 12 weeks. Udacity only has a few courses, and most of them are on the site permanently, you can do them whenever you want.

I went through all the course listings on all 3. Since I am jobless now, I have selected about 5 or 6 courses that I will do starting in a few weeks, and another 5 or 6 in spring. Most revolve around programming, statistics, and data. But there is one that is in a completely different field, and something I have been interested in for a while:

http://www.coursera.org blocked in Sudan, Cuba, and Iran, because it is classified as a "tradeable service" and so it glass under the sanctions imposed on those countries.

This is ridiculous and completely illogical. As usual, sanctions never affect those in power, only the common man, woman, and child.

that's a lot of progress in such a short time... it makes sense though. I was telling someone this a few years ago-- MOOCs are the future of education, and they were completely against the idea. They have a young child and were mournful of the fact that their kid might not ever get a "college experience". I brought up that in the future, the "college experience" will likely just be relegated to the very wealthy, and this horrified her even more.

Based on the recent GOP debates though, doesn't seem like they want to do anything to make real colleges more attainable, so the future I envisioned might come quicker than I expected.
