I can't help but chuckle at how naive some people are about the reason for the bombings, 66 yrs after the fact. 66 years removed from a world war and they look for excuses to make the US look evil and bad. It's like they're bored and just want to feel self righteous about something.8/8/2011 8:48:11 AM |

They started it.
They also were willing to fight to the last person. They had begun training civilians with bamboo spears to try to kill as many invading soldiers as possible. Surrender without a shot at killing the enemy is/was considered a massive shame. Once the emperor realized that the US could wipe out large portions of population without a fight the only way out short of futile suicide was surrender. 8/8/2011 2:19:04 PM |

To the present date, total combined American military casualties of the sixty-five years following the end of World War II — including the Korean and Vietnam Wars — have not exceeded that number. In 2003, there were still 120,000 of these Purple Heart medals in stock. There are so many in surplus that combat units in Iraq and Afghanistan are able to keep Purple Hearts on-hand for immediate award to wounded soldiers in the field." |

I feel like the invasion would have been a long affair that would give the Soviets an opportunity to attack northern Japan from their territory in China under the guise of opening a two front war to expedite japanese collapse. Ultimately this would have lead to a divided Japan similar to Germany or Korea, costing the US an important ally in the western Pacific and providing another flashpoint for WWIII. 8/8/2011 3:17:49 PM |

Not at all surprised by this thread. A bunch of U.S. citizens defending the atrocious acts of their government, after being taught (by government schools) that those acts were defensible. This is exactly how things play out when state violence is used on civilian populations.
The U.S. military dropped not one, but two nuclear bombs. Why? Because the U.S. wanted unconditional surrender. Winning wasn't enough. The U.S. wanted it all, and our leaders at the time were willing to kill as many innocent civilians as it took to get that outcome.
It's never okay to intentionally kill civilians. Period. It's morally fucking wrong. The fact that the majority of Americans still defend U.S. actions during this time is shameful. 8/8/2011 7:16:17 PM |

Yes, it sucks that a bunch of civilians died but a) these were strategic military positions boasting large military industrial complexes. It's not like they were dropping these bombs on a residential suburb. b) a land invasion would have costed many, many more lives. c) Japanese civilians were indoctrinated into believing they fought for the emperor using pitch forks if necessary against the enemy. There would have been extremely messy guerilla warfare, as evidenced by the invasion of Okinawa. d) I suppose they could have dropped the bomb on the emperor's palace, but that would have extremely destabilized the nation and led to a complete clusterfuck.
Unless of course you were referring to Japan's current stance on the Pacific War. If that's the case I think you'd be surprised what the average Joe thinks the cause and effects of the war was over there. My favorite were the museums in Hiroshima and Kure that, in my opinion, intentionally mistranslated US military documents to support their theory that we dropped the bombs on them because we didn't want to sell them crude oil 8/8/2011 11:43:10 PM |

Japan had it coming. The civilian argument holds no weight. They attacked Pearl Harbor while they were still at the negotiation table.
Now I just wish we would have nuked Iraq and Afghanistan. Why waste American lives when we have the weapons and technology to end wars without putting troops on the ground. 8/8/2011 11:52:22 PM |

Afghanistan was a safe haven for Osama. Add Iran to the list. We should nuke them too. (Atleast cut off aid)
Iraq was unfinished business. We owed them one.
I find it entertaining that Americans seem to think there are morals and "rules" to war. If Japan had had a nuke in WWII you better believe Hawaii would have been blown off the earth. You soft hearted idiots are the reason events like 9/11 take place. There should be no rules in a war.

Is it morally wrong? I guess it depends on what your stance on morality is.
If view every person as being equal and you weight the harm done to each individual involved in the conflict, bombing Japan is better than an invasion that would have led to higher casualties. If you can minimize casualties and bring a quicker end to fighting, how could it be morally wrong, unless you apply a double standard to civilians over soldiers, which to me is morally reprehensible that anyone would say that it's ok if military personnel kill each other while standing on the other aisle claiming that civilians shouldn't die.
Not to mention that if we did not bring a quick end to the war on the pacific front, not only would more US and Japanese people die, but also more Chinese people (the government led schools never go into the Japanese occupation of China when talking about the Pacific front of WWII, just that Nazi's are bad the Japanese bombed pearl harbor but never going into the true horror of what the Japanese did to China).8/9/2011 12:37:54 AM |

^^ Naw, the scaring of the Russians was the bonus. The war had to end one way or the other and a land invasion would have been costly, both in casualties and dollar bucks.
Quote : | "If Japan had had a nuke in WWII you better believe Hawaii would have been blown off the earth. " |
Truth. Our sin was completing the bomb first. You can't believe for one second that if Japan or Germany or England or any other country in the war had gotten there first they wouldn't have used the bomb. One can debate whether the second bomb needed to be dropped, but considering that even after the first one the US and Australian militaries were intercepting messages from the Japanese military planning on continuing attacks, I can understand why the decision was made.8/9/2011 8:39:45 AM |

Quote : | "Godzilla is one of the most recognizable symbols of Japanese popular culture worldwide and remains an important facet of Japanese films, embodying the kaiju subset of the tokusatsu genre. He has been considered a filmographic metaphor for the United States, as well as an allegory of nuclear weapons in general. The earlier Godzilla films, especially the original, portrayed Godzilla as a frightening, nuclear monster. Godzilla represented the fears that many Japanese held about the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the possibility of recurrence.[" |
