I am listening to 98.7FM out of LA right now though, and this station beats the shit out of anything rock related in Raleigh.

People have said this about California for years, and yet they continue to be the nation's leader in technology and research. Maybe it's because having a university system that's top class and being a research hub is better for companies that need smart workers than being able to pay as little as possible or being able to pollute as much as they want (but you think Al Gore invented global warming, so whatever). I'm not particularly proud when companies relocate manufacturing jobs to the South. They're doing it because we've got a captive population of people who work for nothing that have a lower level of education. In other words, we're their Mexico. Whoopie.
right?

If I have an advanced degree in some field, why the hell would I want to move to a "business friendly" state like South Carolina? I'd want to go somewhere with the infrastructure for research, like California or Massachusetts.

And then there's the Prop 13 issue, but I doubt you'd consider that a problem, so why bother. Gotta cut taxes for big men like me, don't ask me to care about anyone else, I'll do it on my own (by not caring about anyone else but myself).

^no doubt CA has it's draws, but despite all that you just said the state's population (when excluding the influx of hispanics) has been declining for years.

I also find it curious that the only two states I ever see tourism advertisements for are Michigan and California

So immigrants don't count? Are they just warm bodies that don't contribute anything?

And I see subway ads for tourism in Florida, West Virginia, Virginia, South Carolina, and Alabama all the time, so your anecdote isn't correct.

And as someone who knows more than a few people who have left, I can tell you exactly why they've left: housing prices and the cost of living is through the roof, and housing prices are still high even after the bubble (compare to Florida, or the Midwest, where they're through the floor) Most people I know there have stayed because they think the rest of the country is crazy (and really just as unemployed as they are).

Seriously, when people talk about the places they want to move in this country, the only "business friendly" state anyone even mentions is Texas (but only for Austin, unless you're in the military) or Florida (because you're old). Who the hell ever saves their money and dreams of moving to South Carolina or South Dakota?

If you're creative or smart, you have plenty of reasons to move to Cali, and that will continue to save it.

yeah I visited CA this summer and I was very impressed. Now I know why everybody wants to live there. the driving sucked though.

I'm thinking of moving out there when I get out of the Navy. is San Francisco any better for getting around without a car? I visited San Diego, LA and the Central Coast.

SF is much much much better for getting around car-less -- public transit in the city is pretty good and you can take bart in from the rest of the bay area (you'd definitely need a car to get around if you're living/working outside of the city though)

Yeah the Bay Area is one of the only places in CA where you can get by without a car. If I lived in SF, I'd consider going carless, but I rather enjoy being to drive whenever I want

It's not Manhattan or anything, but it's certainly feasible.

Actually my observation is spot on, b/c it's my observation. Those are the only TV commercials I see and since I don't take public transportation (who does in Raleigh) I wouldn't be exposed to that type of advertising.

And the hispanics population comment is valid b/c that means FEWER people from other states are moving into CA than leaving. How obtuse are you people?

How obtuse are you to think that any of the people that get business from HISPANIC IMMGRANTS OMG give a shit.

Let's be like Texas and have terrible schools, the most minimum wage jobs, bad healthcare, horrible transportation, maniacal leaders (and yet they still have very average unemployment and per capita income)...oh, but there's oil wealth and globbul warmin is fake and you can be a cowboy!!!11

And I live in another city, obviously (I didn't mean the Subway Sandwich Shop).

He's got a point. California is riddled with Hispanics. And Asians. And Samoans. Oh, and the gays. When you take them out, there are very few "Americans" left.

Also, the population numbers of NY would be significantly smaller if you excluded the Irish, Italian, Polish, Jamaican, Cuban, and Middle-Eastern demographics. Much, much smaller.

And really, when it comes down to it, the "true" population of NC isn't that high once you exclude all the Blacks, Hispanics, and Women.

Goddamn, who are all these people in My America?

Personally, I'm very glad there are true Americans like TKE-Teg who refuse to live in California because they listen to Glenn Beck and enjoy NASCAR. Keeps my sky high rent a little lower and I don't have to listen to sound bytes at the bars I frequent.

Nascar is actually getting pretty big in CA, even LA. Its like the cool new thing. The hip hop station was giving away nascar tickets every hour last time I was there.

This is a tired argument. Anybody who knows how to manage money would rather get paid more with higher cost of living than get paid less with lower cost of living.

Property values are sky high but rents are really not that high especially since the crisis. Getting a place in downtown Raleigh is more expensive than decent areas of Cali.

Quote :

wrong. San Diego has one of the best I've ever seen. BART is too damn expensive and getting around public transit in SF is confusing as hell.

I learned it in 2 weeks just visiting and never have that much of an issue with it even when it's been a while. Also, agree, and the general idea here is you are actually out doing shit like surfing, hiking, biking, skiing, rather than living in a 3000 sq ft house being a hermit.

Also about people leaving, if you look at job postings on hackernews for example about 50% of them come from California. Raleigh has a whopping 1%. If you're an actor go to LA, if you're a developer go to SF. They may be losing jobs but they could lose half their jobs in my industry like 4 years in a row and still have more than NC.

BTTT: KROQ has been the seminal station of the rock industry for about 2 decades now, maybe longer. That's like comparing the US to Bhutan

Wow, you've got me pegged. Not a fan of Glenn Beck at all. And I can't stand NASCAR (an opinion I've voiced on TWW a bazillion times). You'd probably be shocked to learn I never fired a gun up until 3 months ago. I do know how to ride a horse though, so I guess Texas is my calling...

My comment about Hispanics isn't racist in the least bit, but I know you want to jump all over me b/c I'm not enamored with CA. In general the Hispanics that immigrate to this country aren't as educated as the general population (esp in CA). So if you could take off the race glasses then you could see the implication of what i stated.

on a daily basis, without hopping on a plane or driving for hours to get to the beach or mountains...

you can be in a dense city like SF and drive for less than 20 mins and be surfing in the pacific or hiking through a redwood forest, or you could be living in LA and hike up through desert canyons. there is nothing in NC that even comes close to Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, Kings Canyon, Mt Shasta, Napa Valley, etc

the thing about California is that there is a mixture of urbanity and wilderness that's not found anywhere else in the world. it's fine if you don't like the politics or diverse populations, but you aren't doing it right if you're not taking advantage of the gorgeous weather and scenery on a daily basis

^^ the whole "because we're out living life" reasoning isn't new - it's been used in NYC to defend the crazy rent prices there, too. apparently everyone with a large house and a lot of land is a hermit

I've got no problem paying more for where I live. If it makes a person happy what is the diff. Plus ya you can do all that in ^ in NC but now where it's all within an hour. Well u could but if u wanted to do weekly or even once a moth u waste all the time getting to those places and spending money on trips. Besides skiing everything I love to do including sea kayaking, snorkeling, cruising the boardwalk ect is all within 15 mins and so is big city life... Plus can't go to Mexico or have Vegas close in NC

There are a lot of rednecks in California. Have you been to Bakersfield? It's almost as bad as Fayetteville.

Anything not within 45 min. of the coast is pretty bad. The only place worse might be South Georgia.

Indeed, I don't live in CA and I still see the advantages. I don't know how you couldn't, unless of course you only like video games and sports bars. On the food front too, the entire foodie movement that just got to Raleigh 5-10 years ago was here half a century ago. You can get real Mexican food, Japanese and Chinese as well...

Yeah, as someone who knows teachers in CA, I can say that it's largely the fault of the most dysfunctional system of government in America. You need more money? Too bad. Too many students in your class? Hey man, Prop 13...don't raise my property taxes, sucks to be you.

Give NC enough time under the current assembly and they'll find a way to match this.

Sacramento is basically on Raleigh's level in terms of things to do and scenery, but with a heftier pricetag so that makes some sense. I think the Bay Area, San Diego, pockets of LA, SLO, Santa Barbara, and Palm Springs are miles away from anything in NC though
