I enjoyed Days 1 and 2 and most of Day 3. The last two matches (DRG vs. Coca and Coca vs. Bomber) really were disappointing to watch IMO. I was really pulling for Nada and Hero

What's with the canned crowd noise?

The crowd can't see the casters, they aren't up on stage. They're on the other side of the curtain behind the stages.

What all games were there?

From what I've heard, it was Halo, SC2, LoL, Black Ops, and MK9. Were there any more?

I get that, but why do they feel the need to add obviously fake crowd reactions to the casters' comments to the broadcast?

This was an entertaining event, to say the least. The number of socially inept beta male gamers was through the roof.

I mainly watched the SC2 events and League of Legends. As a LoL player, I was much more interested (and much more knowledgeable) in that, but for whatever reason they were unable to do spectator for LoL on Saturday. I hope that LoL and DOTA2 continue to grow in popularity.

It isn't fake.

I understand that you're not used to people actually enjoying things, but believe it or not, it does actually happen.

The crowd reaction in the video I posted was actually from the Halo area. The SC2 crowd laughed but was overshadowed by the other crowd.

^Correct. Everything is live. If you hear a "canned" crowd, it's probably from another stage not directly behind the casters.

I think I saw some Asian kids from this event eating lunch @ Saucer. They were with an interpretor (I assume) and all were drinking water. The one kid ate his chicken wings with a fork... I was thinking he did it to not affect his fingers for gametime

I saw that REO was there for MK9 (finished 2nd at the EVO tournament). I'm sure he won. That guy would have wipped my ass with every character.

Actually, this is the first time MLG has featured LoL/DOTA.

the DOTA games (LoL, HoN, etc) actually draw a much bigger crowd than Starcraft at this point.

Yes, it's true. It makes no sense for me to think that crowd noise that corresponds in no way whatsoever to a video isn't canned.

And you didn't immediately think that if they were in fact using canned crowd noise, they might do so in a way that corresponds to the video? Have you never watched Wimbledon, a gymnastics meet, or any other event where there's more than one thing going on at the same time?

We're talking about a video game competition being covered on the internet. I have no expectations for production value.

Sure have, and in person that makes sense. I'd think that a pair of commentators presented in the way those two were would be in some sort of sound isolation, though. In cases where sound isolation isn't entirely possible (for example, crowd noise from Arthur Ashe Stadium spilling into the Grandstand), a reference is usually made to the origin of the noise, in order to keep li'l ol' me from being confused. That goes back to production value, I suppose.

I can tell you that, at least at this MLG, they didn't. Not by a longshot. LoL didn't even get a big screen. In fact, it and MK9 were probably on equal footing popularity wise.

So you're saying they should've made a reference to the other crowd noise every time it happened over the course of three days? Then knock the production value because you don't understand the event you're critiquing? You're so up your own ass it amazes me you can breathe.

I still love how you jump right to "canned noise" because you're literally incapable of understanding that people enjoy things in a way that doesn't have to be described as "ironic".

^ yeah like I said, this is MLGs first go with LoL.

I can't remember the exact tournament, but I think it was during either MLG Columbus or Dallas, but there was a DotA tournament going on as well and it got in the range of 200k viewers over its weekend where as the SC2 streams for MLG got around 80k (and that was record breaking for SC2).

There is a reason valve just put up 1 million for first place in their recent DotA 2 tournament.

No, but considering they've obviously got a production budget, and they know they're handling an event where there's a lot going on, spring for some sound isolation.

Where does this idea come from that I hate everything? I fawn over at least one new record every week in the Music of 2011 thread. The crowd noise was oddly timed and sounded canned. That's not me hating on a gaming event, it's just an observation of something I found strange.

Please explain how this would work, so we can further understand the depths to which you don't know what you're talking about.
