I do feel sad for the victims of 9/11. I feel equally sad for the thousands of U.S. and foreign lives that have been subsequently lost in "the war on terror." I regret that Americans were so petrified by fear that they allowed the government to squander our good fortune. 9/11 was a fork in the road for the United States; we could have behaved either courageously or foolishly. We, unfortunately, went down a very dark path when faced with that decision.
9/11 was a tragedy for everyone reading this...in very far reaching ways. Perhaps we will take these hard lessons to heart and demand that our leaders do the same.

What's sad about this, is that we reacted almost exactly the same way we did after the Maine blew up.
And the only real reason why I remember this is because I was in my 11th grade history class learning about the Spanish-American war on Sept. 11.
And on a somewhat related note, my brother is a history professor and tells his students that Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders would sing their anthem of "Stop. Drop. Shut 'em down open up shop!" before battle.9/12/2011 1:13:22 AM |

I don't mind waiting in line while some TSA guy gives me a reach-around, but at least afford me the decency to wear my shoes while doing it. 9/12/2011 1:42:10 AM |

People need to find closure one way or another, hopefully the memorial helps. But I doubt it. People need to stop one upping their suffering. A lot of people suffered in some way as a result: between wars, being witness to the attacks or the aftermath, direct loss in the attacks, or just feeling bad for those that died because youre a sympathetic person. Instead of bickering and being petty assholes, if people realized everyone suffered to some extent that day and found some common ground to unite behind (much as we did in the weeks after) we could move forward together and repair the fucked up shit that has happened since then.
Instead we argue about the wars. We argue about monetary policy, we argue about national security...
Its assholes like this that help perpetuate all that. I never thought I would pine for the days where the worst thing plaguing our nation was a president who got a blow job and lied about it. 9/12/2011 2:09:03 AM |

As far as big deals are concerned... 9/11 is a big deal.
If people want to over exaggerate their grief, let them. This is supposed to a free country. Tolerate it. It's not hurting you.
Put in your cheap ipod earplugs and turn the volume up if it's bothering you. 9/12/2011 4:06:50 AM |

yea except for that pesky thing where the alarmism, overreactions, and racial hatred that 9/11 drums up ruins everything
