Ummm, the peppered spray people were penned in with fences while a police chief steps up, sprays them and then slinks off into the crowd. Fucking pathetic......

Watch the video more closely. The fence was just blocking the near side and was extending down the sidewalk, not penning people in (hell do you notice how the 20+ people who are there at the beginning of the video disappear after the pepper spray? They weren't penned in anywhere). And the girls were clearly not trying to move away from the fence as they were facing it.

It looked to me like they were stretching the fence beyond its originally intended range.

Are you a moron? Where were the women supposed to move to when they were being kettled? Did you watch the video?

They have the right to express their opinions though legal protests. They also have the right to be complete idiots.

Same here, that and they complain about having debt from their education. Sorry that communications degree didn't make you as marketable as you seem to think you are. Enjoy the chants and V masks.

I fully agree with the cops in those situations, as I do with most other Protest/Mob situations... if your goal is to go out there and cause trouble, don't expect there to be a lack of repercussions. You have the right to protest, but you have to do it right, so you aren't endangering others, or causing a problem for the rest of society as a whole

used to be that if you went to protest, you would do it expecting to have some heads busted, some pepper spray sprayed, and a good chance of getting arrested- you were willing to stand up for you cause despite these risks...

I think a big factor that people aren't considering here is that the pepper spray incident happened in DC. The police here are USED to dealing with protesters. There is a protest literally 2-5 times a week. Most of the time, they can handle the situation without any violence.

I don't see what changed here...

they should just pepper spray anyone who looks, acts, or smells like a hippie...its probaly not the right thing to do but nobody will really care because they are hippies

I long for the days before pepper spray when you would just get your skull cracked with a billy stick.

Oh my God, usually I'm a whole lot more aligned with the ACLU than the po-lice, but this would be a great time for some police brutality. They need to break out the firehoses. Shit, they ought to figure a way to combine firehoses with pepper spray. That would be fucking awesome. Nah, drone strikes are the only solution that would be both sufficiently effective and poetic.

This is what they're doing:
Quote :
"#OCCUPYWALLSTREET uses a practice called "Human Megaphone" to help deliver a speech to the masses. Public address systems and megaphones have not been allowed by the NYPD through the entire occupation. Guess this is how people addressed large crowds before electricity."

Although that one guy has a megaphone, so I'm not sure why they're doing it. Maybe they weren't allowed to use a high enough volume for everyone to hear? At any rate, it's not just some chanting ritual.

I mean I don't think the underlying issues they're protesting would be resolved if they all got jobs in the stockroom at Office Depot or whatever anyway so

That's nice. Did you know the average length of unemployment right now is 40.5 weeks?
