Quote : | "Sooo, what your saying is, you can't bench 135?" |
when i used to lift, 145 was my 1RM bench (BW 140 lbs). i never lifted in HS. started lifting in college and reached the 145 in about 6 months. i was pretty good at the deadlift (300 lbs 1RM) and incline leg press (450 lbs 1 RM), and not bad at squat (225 lbs 1RM).
i was able to improve the latter 3 lifts rapidly, but the improvement in bench was extremely slow (and frustrating).
i intend to get back into lifting when i am 50 9/28/2011 5:54:47 PM |

The countries around india like pakistan and banglidesh all suck at sports too and they all have like 25% of the worlds population.
Quote : | "and the sky is blue. why would you? i haven't seen many americans competitively playing table tennis, badminton, or squash. also, in much of the world outside the US (i.e., countries/cultures that have been around for much longer than the US), sports are mainly played as a tradition and for leisure, not for competition. the few who do end up in competitive sports tend to get into sports that their national compatriots are already famous for. that's why you will see dominant countries/cultures in many sports." |
those sports are not widely played and not even really pure athleticism sports. sure they have tons of skill but so does golf and nascar.
Running and swimming are sports in their purest form. Anyone has access to run or swim because there is water and ground everywhere.
Soccer is the most popular sport in the world because of how easy it is to play.
The eating meat thing has gotta be the answer. Sure you can get protein from other places but the amino acids have to be completely reassembled as opposed to AAs from animal flesh being more similar to the ones your cells need.9/28/2011 6:19:54 PM |

you missed my point completely. my point was basketball, baseball, and football are american/western sports. asking why indians don't play them is like asking why americans don't play badminton or squash. they just don't. it is quite presumptuous to expect the whole world to play basketball or any other western sport. i never said anything about those sports requiring athleticism. but since you brought it up, you need to be a pretty good athlete to play squash, badminton, and cricket.
why don't many americans eat curry? why don't many indians eat burgers? stupid questions, really.

you go jogging or swimming in pretty much any place in india and people will stare at you as if you are mad (unless you live in some gated community or in a rich neighborhood). it is a different culture. people don't run there for fun or health or exercise. it is an alien concept. again, let's try not to be so narrow minded.

are you an expert in biochemistry and/or nutrition? eating meat doesn't make you athletic. you don't need meat to run or swim or play basketball. and btw, AAs are liberated from any protein you eat and then assimilated into your body. chunks of meat don't just get incorporated into your muscles. DIFFERENT CULTURES. that's the answer. (and the other reasons i gave on the previous page)9/28/2011 6:53:31 PM |

the chinese do it and so does everyone else. does india have a more closed culture than china? I don't think so. it doesnt work the other way aroudn because we don't have 20+% of the people in the world. if we did, we'd have good people at everything. And yes, americans do eat curry. Americans eat everything. You need to be a good athlete to play badminton? Really? That is what people do at the gym if they are too fat/unathletic to do anything else. The best athletes in the world play soccer football or basketball because thats where the most money is.
Inidia is never anywhere near the top of the medal count in anything and that is a measure of placing in sports that are global. Usually the countries with the most people are near the top but the indian region is the exception to that rule.

The same thing can be said about most of the world, even the us. You still manage to get .00001% amazing runners which means india should have just as many elite runners/swimmers as anyone else with their huge population.

yes i am an expert. that is what my degree is in. AA's are like legos that make up huge lego buildings which are proteins. Every living thing makes proteins but the blocks are put together more similarly in animals than they are in plants because animals have more similarity in genes. This means the protein from meat is much more efficient for the cell than vegie protein. Your body digests the food but it doesn't break it down all the way to the atomic level.
Different cultures is obviously the answer that we are investigating the charge for. Every other culture in the world produces more eltie athletes.9/28/2011 8:33:50 PM |

Squash and badminton, at a competitive level, both require a hell of a lot of athleticism. They are extremely fast-paced, explosive sports that involve lightning-fast reflexes and a lot of quick lunging and stretching to reach shots. It's nothing like backyard picnic badminton.9/28/2011 11:08:41 PM |

Until recently it wasn't something looked upon as culturally significant. They've only been unified country for about 50 years. So the organized sports thing is just beginning to kick into gear. India's culture is generally hard for Westerners to understand. 9/29/2011 12:45:22 AM |

The reason China does so well at the Olympics isn't because of their population. It's because they have athletic scouts scouring the countryside, sending children to boarding schools where they do gymnastics for 6 hours a day.
India does poorly because like OEP said, sports aren't a highly valued part of their culture.

Sports are human nature. India has plenty of athletes. They just aren't good compared to the rest of the world

How so? Do indians not have access to legs? Do Indians eat a diet that is the same as the rest of the world? India has access to soccer and running. They have all of these global sports but they are horrible at them. Of course it isn't valued in their culture. Thats the point of this thread.

The athletic indians aren’t smart enough to leave the country.
You only see the poindexter ones who were daring enough to come to the US.
Their population is ~4x ours, so not only do they have way more unathletic, scrawny, nerdy Indians, but they have plenty of fat, dumb, burly Indians too, you just don’t see them.
Look up the origins of the word “Thug." 10/15/2011 3:10:00 AM |
