Moogfest also has an even more niche appeal than Hopscotch and only targets people who like one particular genre/sub-genre.

i could count on one hand the number of artists the last two years who appeared at Moogfest that i could give two shits about.

using a synthesizer genres your band

itt

might as well put the beach boys in that genre while you're there.

i'll connect the dots for you and your intentionally obtuse trolling, mang.

Quote :
"Moogfest is a three-day electronic music festival that takes place in Asheville, North Carolina, United States, every year since 2010 towards the end of October. "

some stuff that fits into Moogfest is right up my alley, but it's focused on one type of music, although that type of music does have varying sub-genres.

in general, it's just not my thing, hence the reason why only a handful of the acts who have participated are worth my while. i know, i know... you're shocked to have heard this for the first time, but you see, i don't pollute threads with my bitching to make sure everyone on the board knows just how much Moogfest doesn't appeal to me. this is obviously a novel concept for you.

(i also can't justify the cost differential between Moogfest and Hopscotch. and, i'm just talking about the tickets themselves; i'm from asheville, so i have plenty of places to stay, but the insane prices for nominal acts that would hold my interest just doesn't do it for me).

The ticket price for a regular Moogfest pass was the same as a Hopscotch VIP pass, so I don't see your point as far as ticket prices go. The lines weren't as bad at Moogfest for regular ticket holders and very few things reached capacity.

Sorry you can't get down with a band that uses synthesizers, but I can't get down with Mouthus, Filthybird, the Tomahawks, Xiu Xiu, etc etc.

I can appreciate this viewpoint, but I would like to point out that the term "electronic" has become less of a genre and more of an umbrella term in recent years, almost to the same extent that the term "indie" can now be applied to a variety of bands whose actual music can be placed into a whole array of genres.

In other words, bands like TV on the Radio play a unique fusion of shoegaze/funk/jazz, while a band like Fleet Foxes plays fairly traditional folk music, and yet somehow, both fall under the umbrella of "indie." It's the same with the term "electronic" these days; you have guys like James Blake, who play very minimalist music and bands like Cut Copy that make more or less homages to 80s music, but both are often referred to as "electronic" music. Even if you look at the Moogfest lineup this year, there are no similarities whatsoever between Crystal Castles' music and Amon Tobin's music, for instance.

As Scrumples hinted at, it's almost as if any band that plays a synthesizer can fall under the "electronic" umbrella.

Plus, it's not like Moogfest doesn't get non-electronic acts. I don't know anyone who would call the music of The Flaming Lips or St. Vincent electronic music.

http://ashvegas.squarespace.com/journal/2010/8/11/moogfest-ticket-prices-are-steep-whats-best-way-for-ashevill.html

i only recalled seeing the $350.00 VIP pass, so that's what i was going with. my bad.

^ and dillydaliant --- sure, there were acts I wouldn't consider to be electronic... those you listed above + Big Boi the previous year. Those also happen to be among the handful of acts that appealed to me. (you also forgot Antlers, too, fwiw, who are certainly not what i would consider to be an "electronic" act).

the festival, however, is self-billed as an electronic music fest; i understand your point about the breadth and overlap of the genre, and acknowledged it earlier.

i think there's a quite a bit more variety in both years of the Hopscotch line up, and i would rather go to a festival like that, and that was my point all along.

I considered going to Moogfest and even like a lot of the artists on the bill, but figured I would get bored of hearing that kind of music live for an entire weekend. With Hopscotch, as had already been mentioned, there's a lot more variety in styles, not to mention the much cheaper VIP option.

I figured with guitar rock I'd get tired of hearing a Fender Telecaster over and over again; that's why I'm not going to Hopscotch this year. It's an instrument that certainly has its limitations.

ps you sound ridiculous.

^^I can attest to the fact that Moogfest is the exact opposite of boring. Sooooo much fun and I didn't find myself having any issues of repetitiveness of acts or anything either year.

EDIT: Also, to be clear, I'm not saying that Hopscotch hasn't been a whole lot of fun the last two years; it definitely has been. I just think there is a bit of missed potential in last year's lineup especially.

Anyway, how many bands did the average person see at Hopscotch? Pretty sure I saw less than 20 at actual sets (no day parties, etc). So when people mention value as compared to other festivals simply because there's more bands for the buck, that's pretty stupid.

A lottery ticket is a lot cheaper, and the payout is a lot better that 8 minimalist bands, 1 buzz band, 3 noise bands, 4 ambient loop bands, and 96 local bands. Garage psych. Don't forget garage psych.

I seriously hope no one would look at my stupid ramblings to determine whether or not to buy a Hopscotch pass, but I'm sorry for those who can't take the Internet for what it's worth. While jstpack above appreciates the presale passes, I do not. And that's the only serious message anyone should derive from any of my posts. As being the Wolf Web, things aren't meant to be taken seriously in my opinion. If that weren't the case, the seemingly anonymous presence wouldn't exist and we'd also have a major presence of those who booked the festival; posting with us throughout the thread. I was simply having fun with this thread, as I interpret the Internet as a place to have fun. I can partially hide behind my cloak of anonymity to most users, offer differing and majorly negative quips without fear of being judged to the point of it mattering, and even offer a differing opinion that doesn't involve the salty taste of a certain Grayson's balls.

Hopscotch is a good thing for Raleigh. Go, buy tickets. Be young adults. Have fun with your lives...

I'm just gonna wait this one out. there were tons of people selling their tickets for face value in the month leading up to it last year so I see no need to spend money I don't feel like spending right now. (not trying to deter others from buying though)

Gonna wait as well for the same reasons. I was thinking today about potential headliners that would definitely get me excited enough to immediately buy a ticket, and I saw that Spiritualized was announced for a festival date next summer...they would definitely do the trick. They're like top 2 or 3 on my list of bands I haven't seen that I want to (right behind Radiohead, who I'm seeing in March and is obviously too pricey for Hopscotch).
