It sounds like Edsall is trying to instill discipline in the UMD football program, and is being met with much resistance from the players.

If that's the case:
1) Good for him.
2) He obviously didn't know anything about the quality/character of a UMD player before accepting the head coaching job.
3) He deserves to coach at a better school, with a program who is ready to make the disciplinary changes needed for a team to succeed--on and off the field. (i.e., not UNC)

When asked Tuesday whether being limited to 17.5 practice hours per week instead of the usual 20 hampered the team’s preparation, Edsall said: “We have talked about that as a staff. Going into the season, I don’t think any of us realized how much of an impact that was going to have, especially when you are coming into a new situation. .?.?. That was something that probably had a bigger impact than what we anticipated.” On July 25, Edsall told reporters that “it’s not going to be an issue at all because we are not going to let it be an issue .?.?. it is not going to hinder us.” Edsall also spent a few minutes painting a picture of working in his office late Monday night watching with interest a television interview of New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft. Kraft was talking about “The Patriots Way” and how he talks to each player they sign and lays out expectations in no uncertain terms. “So I am sitting there and I am saying, ‘Wow, that’s all I am trying to do here at Maryland,’?” Edsall said. “And I said, ‘You know what, I must be doing something the right way because here is a guy, one of the most successful franchises in the NFL, basically saying the same things that I am saying and trying to instill here in this program.'” Edsall said he believes he “unfairly” has been criticized for instilling discipline with team rules in order to create an atmosphere of accountability. “Here to me is the misconception: I care about these young people,” said Edsall, who later added, “If asking people to be on time and do what’s right is wrong, then I was raised the wrong way and brought up the wrong way.” In the team house, Edsall said, one of the first things players see every day is a pyramid that emphasizes core values and goals. Called “Gaining Results Through Teamwork,” the pyramid at the top emphasizes wins, bowl games, championships and graduation. “But you just can’t go from the ground floor to the top floor without doing the process along the way,” Edsall said. “And the process along the way is about team, about trust, belief, buy into. That’s the foundation, the first level of the pyramid.” Mackall unlikely to return The Maryland career of defensive end David Mackall, who started the first seven games this season, appears to be over. Keys to the game for ncstate:

Offense needs to show up. It's been rare that the offense has showed up 2 weeks in a row this season. Otherwise this could be a long game like the Boston College one.

CBS has us playing WVU again in the belk bowl. This could start to develop into a rivalry if it happens. That is the 5th selection. I'd be hoping for the 6th selection to play Tennessee in the music city bowl.

The independence bowl sucks but it would be nice to get a shot at Boise.

I want to go to the Belk Bowl. It was for some odd reason the third highest bowl in attendance last year after the Fiesta and the Rose, and it's also only 2 hours away so I can go.

I'd take Independence if we got to play a team that isn't in the Big Least, though.

I guess the most important thing to remember is that Miami isn't going bowling so we already improve 1 spot in the standings. We have a hot streak going beating UNC, Clemson, and Maryland in the past 4 weeks.

The Maryland game was great for NCState. It solidified it's bowl eligibility in style like it does every year with its 'gimme' win over the terrapins.

It's just good to wrap up a 7-5 (4-4) year with the solid victory we got over Maryland like we do every season. We always find ourselves in this "hmm if we beat Maryland we are going to the championship game or bowling" and they just roll over every time and we cruise to the finish line in style.
