i'm enjoying your recent style of posting, very objective, and informative.
i have to think johnson will start shooting a little better, and hopefully harris will be good for a few threes off the bench, every few games. 11/28/2011 10:48:39 PM |

Johnson will be fine, he's probably still pressing trying to impress his new coach, fans, and team.
I love his ability to run the point. That alone makes it worth his playing time, letting Lo take time off. 11/28/2011 10:52:55 PM |

You kid, but Vandy actually outplayed Tyler for a stretch at the beginning of the game at RBC last year. I haven't seen Indiana play more than about 5 minutes all year, but if Zeller is as soft as his brother the physicality of our front line under Gottfried might bother him. If we want to keep that up, our bigs need to learn to play physical without committing cheap fouls.
Regarding de Thaey's three point shooting, I have no doubt he would not be taking them if our staff was not confident that he is capable of hitting that shot. It's hard to compare his international stats, considering he has had time to work on his shot since then and that is a further line.11/28/2011 10:53:30 PM |

I would obviously be ok with him hitting 35%. It would stretch defenses and allow Lobo (!) And Leslie to slash into the paint.
Anything lower than 30% from the college arc and the guy should just stop trying. Unfortunately, as you mentioned, we just don't have the outside shooters on the roster besides Wood.
Alex Johnson is kinda reminding me of Archie Miller, except with a much more suspect outside shot. 5'11" shooting guards can only do so much. On the bright side, Brown was outstanding as PG against Elon. 11/28/2011 10:54:13 PM |

Even with a win against Indiana, it will probably need to be a pretty impressive win for us to get some votes. We have a loss, and some voters would still see that one loss in our record and our upcoming games against Stanford and Syracuse before they commit to giving us a vote. I think we would need to be 8-1 heading into the Syracuse game before we'd get any votes. If we were to somehow win the Syracuse game, we would probably be looking at a 14-1 start heading into the start of conference play with Maryland at home, and be well entrenched in the Top 25.
There is a trap game though at St. Bonaventure. Thankfully that game is at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester rather than the Reilly Center on their campus. That place is an old school gym with the fans right on the court and can get very loud. Even with the game at a neutral site, we better watch out, as last season, St. Bonaventure played Virginia Tech in Rochester and took them to overtime before the Hokies pulled away for a 76-68 victory. The Hokies played St. Bonaventure in Blacksburg last night and beat them by 9 points, 73-64. St. Bonaventure's center, Andrew Nicholson, is a legit pro prospect that has been averaging around 19 points and 7 rebounds per game. In some ways I wish the game was at the Reilly Center, because the atmosphere would surely prepare us for conference play on the road, especially at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

I know that Florida State and Michigan State have been the better programs recently, but in terms of history and amount of people watching, I would think the Indiana game with us would be better for ratings. No one at FSU cares about basketball, and Michigan State always starts out really slow.
I want to be on ESPN dammit and not the Deuce! Oh well I guess it's baby steps in making our way up from ESPN 3. 11/28/2011 11:11:29 PM |

Wow some of you need to work on your reading comprehension. Note I said if we somehow were to beat Syracuse, that doesn't mean that I think we will. Personally I think we are going to lose that game and most likely the Stanford game. If we were to somehow win those though, there is no other team we should lose to until conference play. Maybe you could make a case for St. Bonaventure, but that is it. 11/29/2011 9:49:42 AM |

2-2 is the most likely scenario out of the 4 remaining name opponents.
Followed by 1-3, 3-1, 0-4, 4-0.
The probability of 0-4 and 4-0 are both so low that they are barely worth mentioning at this point (combined about 5-10%).
If we get to 2-2 we've set ourselves up for a shot at the tournament. What we need to avoid is 1-3 and the best way to do that is to beat IU in a near toss up and defeat St Bonaventure in what loosely amounts to a road game.
If we lose to IU we have to pull off a cross country road win vs Stanford or a home win against a top 5 Syracuse team that's playing great right now and beat St Bonnie. That's asking for a lot for a team that hasn't figured out how to defend yet. 11/29/2011 1:47:20 PM |

State opened as 1 point favorites. A bit surprising, but we have been getting a lot of media hype. I'm not going to bet against us, but IU should be 1-2 point favorites I think.
What a great opportunity for us to showcase our rejuvenated basketball program. It was basically one year ago today that we took the beating of a lifetime. 11/29/2011 11:20:12 PM |

yeah, i heard last year's team considered xbox practice. the only time they went to the gym was for scheduled practices ... and half the time towe and sid had to run the point in practice because enough players didn't show.

Now the Xbox thing is definitely true. Howell was just remembering how you could goaltend on NBA Jam when he jumped up for the ball at the end of the Texas game.
I can just see Lowe wheeling in a cart with a TV/Xbox - "Ok now see how I'm heating up? That's the state I'd like to see you in if at all possible. Now there won't be actual flames on the ball but you can always imagine if it helps." 11/30/2011 11:08:13 AM |
