They would be unbelievable if they got oden and he stayed healthy. Because he's been injured its easy for people to forget how productive he's been in the games he did play
Honestly a team like the heat who can cruise to a top seed without him should just bench him until the last 10 games of the season and then hope he can hold up for a playoff run. 12/5/2011 2:08:48 AM |

I'd be shocked if he signed with the Heat.
The Blazers have already extended an $8 million qualifying offer, and the best Miami will be able to come up with is mid-level money. Granted, the security of a multi-year deal could have its appeal. But I think going to Miami would only place his career under greater scrutiny, which I could totally seem him wanting no part of at this point.
I think I read Bill Simmons suggest this, but either the Suns or Pacers may be an ideal situations for him. The Suns have a supposedly magical training staff to save his legs and he's from Indiana, so couple a homecoming with a low-pressure, small-market and that could be a comfortable environment for him. If he's willing to take something for around the mid-level, then he wouldn't be too risky an investment for either team as the Suns plan for a post-Steve Nash future, and the Pacers have Roy Hibbert in case the injuries do prove never ending. 12/5/2011 4:03:56 AM |

Quote : | "players who have some name recognition that might get some $ even though they suck (Jeff Green,Spencer Hawes, kenyon martin, carl landry, nick young etc)" |
Carl Landry doesn't suck. he'd be a great first big off the bench for any team. though a bit undersized, he's one of the few guys in the League who can reliably score in the low post. you're assessment of him is especially laughable when you go on to praise the potential of Humphries, McRoberts, Dorsey, and Sheldon Williams.
Quote : | "Chuck Hayes and Reggie Williams provide value. If Dunleavy is healthy he could be a huge steal for someone if he regains form." |
I'm with you on Chuck Hayes. without having last season factored in, I've read that the Rockets have advanced stats that rate Hayes as the NBA's best post defender.
you're right about Dunleavy , too. if his body can hold-up, he could be a huge contributor to an already solid team. if the Hornets kept Chris Paul through the season, they'd be hugely improved with Dunleavy at the 2. I don't know if they could make it work with their cap situations, but he'd be a great addition to either the Grizzlies or Spurs. the Celtics could really use someone like him, too. he could play some backup point for Rondo and be a solid scorer off the bench.
Quote : | "Shannon Brown is becoming startable almost, great backup SG." |
he's neither of these things. he will never be anything more than a serviceable backup 2. he doesn't play good enough defense to compensate for the inconsistency of his shot to deserve anything close to starter minutes.
Quote : | "Mbah Moute will get someones attention if milwaukee doesnt offer him much" |
kills your team as a starter, but great defense off the bench.
Quote : | "Kirilenko is back to being an elite player when healthy, will be interesting to see how much he gets offered. he's a steal for $7m but not for max money." |
only thing anyone would give him max money for is to swap wives. if Kirilenko ever truly qualified as elite, he certainly isn't anymore. there aren't any all-star teams, or all-NBA votes in his future. still, he is a player with a lot to contribute. I could see him successfully playing a Shawn Marion for Dallas last year like role for any team on the cusp. if Prokhorov went after him, Kirilenko, Deron Williams and Brooke Lopez would a good enough grouping to get the Nets into the playoffs. and if they could somehow acquire Dwight Howard and retain a Kirilenko and Deron Williams, they'd be title contenders.
here's a question: what happens with JJ Barea? clearly, he was instrumental in the Mavs playoff success last year, but could he possibly hold nearly as much value for any other team? and with Beaubois on the roster, should Dallas just roll the dice on him and not clog up future cap space? for the life of me I can't figure out what a reasonable contract offer for Barea would be. to me, he's one of the most difficult players in the NBA to assess.

He can't carry a team to a title, but he can carry a team to 50 wins and a 3 or 4 seed, which is pretty much the best case scenario for Orlando and/or New Orleans should they lose their top guys. 12/6/2011 1:49:16 PM |

Gasol gives New Orleans, at best, a place in the bottom half of the playoffs and a first round elimination for the next 3 years. assuming they're biggest interest is building a championship contender, after losing Paul, the best case scenario for them is getting back young talent and expiring contracts. then they bottom out, hope to score big in the loaded 2012 draft, and if they're able to select a true franchise player, utilize their cap-space cautiously, but wisely, a la Oklahoma City.
I read this on some blog and thought it was a great idea: the single best asset New Orleans could get for Paul would be Stephen Curry. he's young, exciting, still improving, the next most likely heir to the Steve Nash throne, and the son of a former Hornet great. 12/6/2011 2:21:27 PM |

Yikes I'm giving the clippers a chop. Three years ago caron butler would be a great signing but after falling off and then outright sucking last year AND coming off an injury he is most likely completely washed up.
3 years $24 million???? There is a lot of young talent out there you could land significantly cheaper. It's a shame bc I expected the clippers to make the playoff leap this year but this makes it tough 12/8/2011 5:13:20 PM |

i think they would have been better off getting Tayshaun Prince, but its not necessarily a bad deal.
it only makes it easier to now package Aminu with Kaman for a quality point guard.
and if they do no deals, they could start Aminu at the 3 and make Bulter the 6th man and have a potentially great scoring option for the second unit. 12/8/2011 6:02:15 PM |

keeping Bynum as bait for Howard? 12/8/2011 6:21:57 PM |

You are really underestimating how badly Caron Butler fell off last year. It was a horrible signing unless he's back to his old self. He's about to turn 32 and he's coming off an injury. Wings tend to decline sharply after 30, only big men and point guards are typically still productive. Honestly his value should be closer to $1M per season than $8 million.
Tyson Chandler likely to the Knicks. That would actually make them competitive and if they got Chris Paul and kept Landry Fields somehow they'd be the favorites to win the title.
Dallas probably won't be able to compete for the title without Chandler. They are really old and likely trying to save cap space for next offseason. Haywood is a decent replacement though.
Sucks Chandler isn't going to Golden State. He'd make them a really strong team. 12/8/2011 6:30:16 PM |

with a frontcourt of Chandler, Amare and Carmello the Knicks would be looking pretty great. but how do they get Paul? I hear Stoudemire is who they'd have to deal for him, but why would the Hornets accept that deal?

Oden took Portland's 1 year qualifying offer for $8.9 million.
It makes sense. If he can stay healthy and have a productive season he'll get $10MM/yr from someone but as of right now people were too worried to offer more than MLE type money. He could always get that later even if he gets hurt again.
Dwight howard to LA, Gasol to houston, and Scola/Martin to Orlando? That is an awful deal for Orlando. Both of those guys are alright but nothing special... good deal for both Houston and a coup for the Lakers. Gasol is great, but Howard is younger and dominant.
WOW. Chris Paul headed to LAL but they are dumping Gasol & Odom?!?! Chris Paul is a top notch player, but I'm not sure they get better by losing two great players. Bryant will hate having someone overshadow him and always have the ball. Weird trade. Is Bynum for Howard next?
Battier and Mike Miller are pretty equal in terms of value but with Miller's injury troubles and Battier's flexibility on defense that's almost definitely an upgrade for them. They simply have to get a center though, so if the move keeps them from landing one it's detrimental overall.

between him, Wade and Lebron they've got the best perimeter defense in the league. and his ability to shoot the spot up 3 will be huge for creating more spacing on the floor.

at this point, Battier is much better. Miller is chronically injured and when he's actually been on the court he seems scared to shoot. also, Battier's defense is much better. Miller can create a lot more off the dribble, but the Heat don't need that. apparently, Miami is bringing in Eddie Curry to play center. if that dude turns into a player after a decade of disappointment, that'd be a pretty unprecedented reclamation project. still, if he's able to get on the court, he can't be worse than the Ilgauskus-Magloire-Juwan Howard trio from last year.

it seems crazy that just Bynum is the best they could get for Howard. if it was Bynum and Gasol, then sure, that's as much back as they can get from anyone. if Chicago is interested at all, they can put forth a much better offer than Andrew Bynum and a bunch of tomato cans.

This is just an absolute mess. People (not just Lakers fans) seem pretty irate with Stern for this shit. The NBA was insistent that they'd let the Hornets operate on their own without interfering, but the first big move they make the NBA immediately strikes down just because the small market owners get pissed (by the way, those small-market owners weren't getting Paul anyway so they've got no reason to get their pannies in a bunch).
This is why a league can't own a team the way the league owns the Hornets right now. The NBA has lost a lot of credibility in this whole debacle. I don't see any way that their rejection of this trade gets sustained; I think Chris Paul will still be a Laker on opening day. 12/8/2011 10:28:20 PM |

How can they say that deal got turned down for basketball reasons? That's a pretty legit return for Chris Paul. Nearly a competitive starting five for one player, they probably won't get a whole lot more than that from anyone.
Jordan would trade Chris Paul for Nick Young and a 2nd rd pick if he had a chance.
