Any of you guys/gals have an espresso machine?

I got this one last summer and I haven't touched my drip machine since.

Super easy to use and makes some great espresso. I tend to just drink americano's but will make the occasional latte

In the 90s I had one but a) it didn't have nearly enough water pressure to be worthwhile, b) it didn't froth worth shit, and c) it was a bitch to clean. I'm sure the home models they make these days are much better but I'm scarred for life

This thing is a total piece of cake, especially with the grinder and dual wall cups. All I do is have it set on the grind amount I like, push a button and it dispenses that much, tamper it down, run the water through, wash the grinds out.

Every now and then the clean me light comes on and you just use a cleaning tablet and send it through the cleaning cycle. I got the thing as a gift, can't see myself buying something that nice to make coffee with but I am sure glad I have it

just found a cock roach in some pre-ground coffee (Lavazza) that was given to me at work

Counter Culture Forty-Six FTW.

Some hipsters told me CC is garbage though and when I pressed them on it they said Back Alley is the best locally. I got a mixed order of their stuff and it was ok. Their Hambela (Ethiopia) was really good and blueberry-y.

Got some Yirga Cheffe (Ethiopian) and Kabum (Uganda) from Oak City Coffee Roasters - Kabum was really good but I still like the Counter Culture 46 Blend for a standard dark roast better. However, the Yirga Cheffe was excellent and had a similar blueberry/winey taste to the Hambela from Back Alley but it was a little more bold and dark. Highly recommend. I'll be adding that to my normal rotation.

Go to sweet maria's and get a pound of green beans for $7.

One of my friends took an old toaster oven and re-configured it to be able to roast his own beans.

He put a rotisserie spinner in it and buys the beans to roast online

What grind size are you guys using for pour-overs? I've had to really dial my grinder back to make a really coarse grind in order to get my extraction times down. It seems like all of the online tutorials say use a medium grind, similar to kosher salt, but if i do that my extraction takes forever and i end up getting an overextracted acidic cup of coffee.

I think I'd only do pour overs if I had a butler, or when I feel like standing at a counter and being judged with contempt from a Actor/Barista @ Intelligentsia. You guys must not value your time.

Also airpop roasting always tasted over done, even at lighter roasts, and the mess/smell is another issue.

^^If you have a grinder that's not producing a uniform grind - i.e. it's making a lot of dust - that really slows things down since it hampers the permeability of the filter.

Maybe try to find a 40 or 50 mesh sieve.

Does anyone have any suggestions that are similar to Magnolia Grill blend?

There's no Whole Foods within an hour of me, and it's not on their website. Counter Culture doesn't list it anymore. A Southern Season lists it online, but the shipped cost is getting pretty pricy. Similar coffees would be just fine.

I'm interested in doing pour-over to avoid boiling water in plastic with my current cheap AF coffee maker.

Can someone recommend a setup available on amazon? I already have a kettle.

^^^cheap kitchen scale, porlex or other burr grinder, Kalita Wave dripper and filters.

Chemex is great and a visually stunning setup. But for ease of use I have found the Kalita to be the best. It gives a consistent brew each time and I like the results more than my Hario V60.

Grinder - https://tinyurl.com/y8nnefpv This is the one i have, but i don't remember it being $60. You just want one with ceramic burrs. Hand grinders are cheaper than electric. If i was making coffee for more than just myself i'd want something bigger, but this has never failed me.

A gooseneck kettle makes pouring easier, but i poured many a cup with a standard stubby Calphalon kettle.

Personally i use about 24g of coffee and pour in about 380g of water for a 3:15-3:30 brew time.
50g - rest for 30 seconds
then pour in 75g increments over the next 2:30 to total volume of 380g. Then pull it out around 3:15.

^^minimal in my experience. But they also make glass and ceramic waves. I just like the stainless because it's lighter (compared to my glass V60) and easier to pack and move around.

I also preheat the wave and rinse the filter with boiling water prior to starting. Secondly, with incremental pouring the water is continuously mixed with the grounds and not just sitting on top of the grounds losing heat before filtering through.

Add a thermometer or a kettle with a thermostat to the list. Temperature control is just as important as grind consistency.

My Capresso ate a fucking rock last night. Some definite wear on the static burr, but the rotating burr actually looked ok.
