why does this thread describe Introverts like they suffer from a personality disorder? Is there a chart that explains why extroverts won't shut the fuck up or leave the bar before closing time? 12/14/2011 7:46:13 PM |

^because extraverts are thought of as just being "normal"
kinda like whites, Christians, heterosexuals, monogamists, the able, cisgender individuals, males, adults, and members of the middle class

So...snotty, self-absorbed introverts justify why they're better than boorish, uninteresting extroverts. Argue about how special you are, then compartmentalize and label yourself. Also, nothing can ever be described as deviating from the social norm, lest you reveal your latent bigotry. Ok, I'm tracking now. Thanks, thread.

jeebus, this thread is not knocking extroverts or anyone... it is just showing some of the tell tale signs of an introvert, and trying to explain that they are myths that don't necessarily have to define them.
I realized that once I identified with the introvert-type personality that I was more comfortable with myself, and I opened up a little more, just putting it out there so people could think about it. And if you don't identify with maybe you can see why some of your friends behave this way, not just being that way because they don't like you.

but enough talking about those other kinds of people; if they want to feel that they need their own thread to make themselves feel better, let them make it.
My wife is mostly an extrovert, except that she gets anxious about meeting large groups of people for the first time. Other than that, she is perfectly fine with accepting invitations to hang out with "friends" and subsequently lets me know the day of. Talk about anxiety. I don't do small talk, except with my dad. I like close, few friendships.
And you know what?
That's okay.

This is a combination of being introverted and neurotic. There are introverted people who are very flexible and adaptable, such as Bill Clinton.
There are extroverts who are neurotic as well.
The thing that determines whether you are intro or extro is whether interacting with other people tires you out or pumps you up.12/14/2011 10:35:07 PM |

It's hard for me to hold a conversation with someone about something I don't care about. The topics don't really have to bore me, I could be genuinely slightly interested but I still can barely bring myself to devote more to the topic than "oh that's interesting"
So on the flip side I automatically assume that everyone else is like me, so even if I care about a subject I generally won't talk that much about it with someone I'm not good friends with because I assume they would probably be bored by it. 12/15/2011 1:16:31 PM |

I can relate to a lot of those. I like being around people, but it does wear me out. Usually if I have a busy day, then I want to go home and be left alone. I usually try to talk to Peter though, to keep him happy.
Working in sales and living in a small town means I have to do a lot of small talk. I've gotten use to answering their little questions and acting like a care. It is neat when I find out I have something in common with this random stranger, like his is also from my hometown or something. My coworker is constantly talking to people, but it is mostly about things they probably don't care about. Does that make him an extrovert, introvert, or just socially awkward? 12/15/2011 4:05:35 PM |

my very first thread was in like 2007 or 8 and I posted about how ncstate should allow a graffiti art project to paint the 'ugly' parts of campus or somthing, it was lame as shit, people tried to be nice. AND THEN I posted about my stolen scoooter years later in grad school
good times

Myth #10 is actually true. I'm definitely an introvert, but I've taught myself how to be outgoing, sociable, work a crowd/room, etc. There's no way I would have ever survived the service industry and a career in teaching if I didn't learn how to be social.
My default preference is definitely being alone and I need time by myself to recharge after prolonged social interactions, but I've fooled lots of people into thinking I'm an extrovert because I know how to act like one. It's really not that difficult and it's honestly for the best. 12/6/2015 10:31:33 PM |

It goes the same way for people who are super extroverted and freak out and get anxious when they're alone. It's healthy to learn how to be apart from other people and have some independence, even if it's outside your comfort zone.
I honestly think the whole introvert/extrovert thing is overblown and that it really just comes down to personal preferences. It's like debating chocolate vs vanilla- no real point. 12/7/2015 3:31:28 PM |

Everyone should read this book. Even if you are not an introvert, you may work with introverts, manage introverts, be married to one, have children that are introverts, etc... and this book is very educational.
This book changed how we manage and review staff and also how we create groups and manage projects, it's a very good read
