^Sam Champion and his "Extreme Weather Team" are the greatest at that. I hate watching him blow stuff out of proportion every morning. Then the local mets have to polish or clean it up.

The Weather Channel's guilty, too, with this whole "naming winter storms" business, but that's not hurricane related.

^ Yup. Watched ABC evening news tonight; it's what inspired my post.

They were talking about 80mph gusts, but the graphic displayed as though it were sustained. Also, the chick (Ginger?) talked about "10 foot seas and DEADLY rip currents". That is not extreme. That is normal for a cat2 storm

Whole-heartily agree about TWC too...Jim Cantore runs out here every season fapping to his "this place is fucked and everyone's going to die" episodes. It's enough to make me rage, Lewis Black-style.

The arctic winds mashing with the tropical system in the northeast next week could be bad, but how the fuck can you tell? They're reporting on Sandy with the same fervor that they use for the most minor of tropical depressions, and the average guy can't tell when the proverbial wolf is there or not.

Weather forecasting is one of those things that I actually look to TWW opinions with genuine anticipation of insight. Besides that we have a few professionals and hobbyists scattered around, everyone in general is jaded and bitter enough to cut the hype and throw out a more practical analysis.

Yeah this is just a lot different than your normal hurricane scenarios. I am looking forward to watching how this whole thing unfolds. I dont think Raleigh will see many effects but the far eastern part of the state should have a shitty weekend.

I'm in Portsmouth, VA in a coastal downtown area that got nailed in the '09 nor'easter. I'm curious how this will compare. Will probably go for some walks tomorrow to keep an eye on the rising water levels throughout olde towne. Should be in a safe enough area that I won't have to evacuate, but if it rains continuously through Monday that might change things.

Power lines down in kill devil hills, Hwy 12 closed at Oregon Inlet. So far Wright Memorial Bridge is still open, may close if winds pick up. Ferries were overloaded yesterday so some people are stranded on Ocracoke. Roads washed out in Rodanthe... Again. Roads over washed in Hatteras at S curve. Roads over wash in Kitty Hawk, water under some houses.

Asphalt missing near S-curve and temporary bridge. Bonner bridge has a damaged railing, it wasn't clear from Dare County Emergency Management if this was related to the storm or an accident (not sure how the storm would damage a railing).

^Just saw the pictures. Really it was a matter of time for those, they weren't left with much protection after the last couple storms.

Well he didn't. He's human filth. I thought everyone knew this by now. This is exactly the kind of street-sweeper/sympathy-getter event every mayor hopes for. Bums will die, ghettos will be razed, boutiques will be built and a lovely memorial service will be held. This storm will do in 24 hours what a decade of expensive gentrification couldn't.

Flooding will probably be an issue in some of the bigger northeast cities that aren't used to it and probably aren't planned for this much water but beyond that I don't see what the big deal is gonna be.
