Got some folks from the astronomy wing outside my building now setting up some high powered telescopes with filters. I went down to talk to them a few mins ago and they had some ultra sunglasses too. I looked right at the sun with the glasses and it looked like a full moon, it was kind of weird. I could see some sunspots through the telescope too but Venus isn't visible yet.

do NOT use a telescope without a solar filter that goes around the FRONT of the lens. focusing the sun through your eyepiece is like holding a magnifying glass over a piece of paper to start a fire - it'll burn the shit out of your retinas and you'll be blind before you even feel the pain

I just became a hero to all of the tower folks here at RDU when I nabbed a pair of binoculars and made a projection outside. Everyone was coming out to see it and take pictures. [/nerd]

I used the pinhole mirror technique... took a 6-inch diameter mirror (my wife's)...covered it with electrical tape except for a 5mm x 5mm hole... Put it 40 feet away at the end of the driveway and reflected the sun all the way into the garage.. i am impressed it worked as well as it did... i was a little skeptical

Taped some welding glass to the front of binoculars. Worked great, you can even see what I think are sun spots (can someone smarter than me confirm this?)

Oh, yeah, and then I put my SLR on the end of the binoculars. It was a crazy setup

Yes, those are sun spots.

Here are my pictures using binoculars, a box, a phone book (to adjust angle) and another box with a piece of white paper taped to it.

That one was using the flash on my iphone, but it shows the sun spots here too.

Got out my 80mm refractor + solar filter and watched the beginning of the transit until the clouds hit

However, I did manage to snap a few photos from my phone's crappy camera, but I'd really like to get a decent dedicated CCD for my telescopes so I can start getting better-than-crap quality photos. Didn't think to get any shots of the sunspots, so I'll have to do that at a later date.

For anyone interested, I got this with 120x zoom via a 600mm focal length on the scope and a 10mm eyepiece + 2x barlow lens setup, taken through the eyepiece. Visually it was much more appealing



EDIT: The significant distortion/blurriness of the edges is due to my line-of-sight being over a hot black roof - just like looking over hot pavement, but 120x more obvious.
