Moved it to a different building that I don't have access to and refused to tell me where it was. I had to go walking through the building and looking in windows to find it, and I still don't have a key to go get it back.

Yep. I was working 40+ hours a week while I was a full-time grad school student. It sucked ass, majorly. I hardly ever had any time to myself. But I got my MS with a 3.6 GPA and 2 papers published.

A physical model I was in the process of refurbishing and modifying. Bastard stole it from my lab so he could have some undergrads apply for a grant to do the same work I was going to. So now I have to find something different to do, since that part of my project got fucked up by this thieving bastard. He admitted in an email he stole it because I was busy trying to get the paperwork sorted out for returning from a medical leave, so I'm fairly certain he's fucked (and hopefully fired).

Similar shit has happened to male students in my department and it has been dealt with in a timely manner. Because I'm female and registered with disability services they think they can pull shit like this all the time and I won't fight it.

and was the model your property or the property of the department? It sounds like the model was sitting around and nothing was getting done and so he had to get someone else to take over the project, hence the undergrads.

I'm doing a physics PhD at a school out west and man my advisor is a total asshole...he keeps setting me up for government jobs...i'm just not that into them. I think i'd rather teach.

On top of all of that he's using my research to help his own reputation. The shit is really starting to piss me off man...I put in a ton of hours in the lab with the rest of my lab team and we constantly have fantastic data/results.

WE GET NO CREDIT THOUGH...and he's trying to send my buddy Mitch home for lack of productivity...Mitch is incredibly capable and smart...total dick move.

Goddammit, My publication was already behind schedule (partly my fault)

but then my PI "pushed it through" department review so that he could get it submitted to a journal and it would show up on his CV which was being reviewed for tenure -- no big deal.

Now it has been rejected, I'm getting critiques and comments that I've either:

a)never heard from anyone before and am not sure how to address (scary)
b)knew about but couldn't do anything due to the design of the project (eyerolls for days)
c)Are impossible to do (No I can't present the data three different ways and still make it under the length requirements)
d)seem like petty personal taste stuff (formatting, word usage, etc)


So frustrating to think you are finished, only to have to go back to the same project, resurrect it and keep working. I was pretty close to sending the "take this publication and shove it . . . " email but have since stepped back and counted to 10.

Guys, I will be in my 7th year in the fall. FWIW, I am in organic synthesis. I have worked on 6 different projects, 4 of which were successful/publishable. For some unknown reason to me my PI refused to publish any of them but was more than happy to have me move on to another project. I was even able to get a really good postdoc offer. Then, I did something terribly wrong:

I volunteered to stay a semester extra so that I could finish/publish a project. My PI then pushed an entirely new project on me when he realized I was staying. Now he is saying that I cant graduate if I don't finish it AND I am trying to write my dissertation.

At this point, since nothing that I have done is gathering any interests in papers from the PI, I really don't get the point. I just want to walk away from it all.

What do you want to work on after graduate school? What is so important about the PhD that a Masters is not good enough? Some folks just want to finish it, which is understandable. From a pragmatic point of view, what are you planning on doing with your degree post-graduation?

My wife finished the research for a dissertation in 3 years and her advisor wanted to have her stay on for another 3 years to do a bunch of followon crap that had absolutely no additional value. She made her connections in her scientific field, got what she wanted out of graduate school, said to heck with it, called it a thesis and left with a Masters. In her current line of work in industry, the difference between a Masters and PhD is negligible.

However, it really depends on what you want to do post-graduation for whether it will make a difference or not.

Old post, but I'm going to challenge this / call this out. If you are getting an any master's degree, MBA or otherwise, solely to advance your career with your current employer, you are getting the master's degree for the wrong reason. Getting your employer to pay for the degree is a plus, but should not be a deterrent if you want to get a master's degree.

I have high ambitions of going into academia, and my PI knows this, which is why I got a good post doc with funding.

It is even tougher for me because I started out my degree on a project that was clean up for a guy that got a Ph. D. and a 6 figure job. That took about 6-7 months to fix.

WTH???? I've never heard of this happening to anyone, ESPECIALLY if they got reasonable results. Why wouldn't you atleast try, send it to department review and see what others think, etc? Have you asked for a critique from the PI or why its not publishable?

If the new project wasn't a part of the original deal then I don't see how he has a leg to stand on. I know PIs will use pressure tactics like this sometimes, trying to do more with less and using up a student that they know does quality work, but I really feel like you have a pretty good angle to sit him down and explain that your dissertation is priority #1. How can someone give you a project in your last semester and say "you can't graduate until this is done." Makes no sense to me.


what is your relationship like with the PI? Sounds like it might be time to have some frank discussions.

Banjoman: I finished up my PhD in organic synthesis last august. I ran into similar problems with my PI when i was trying to get out. I pretty much told her Im defending on this day and to deal with it. I knew i had done enough work to graduate and all my committee members were on board.

You've gotta put your foot down and tell your PI what you want. They are going to keep on taking advantage of you if you let them. Remember they will be replacing an experienced student with a first year who most likely wont produce anything till year 3+.

You've been there long enough and even though you havent published your work, it sounds like the work was solid.

Have you fulfilled all other requirements before defending your dissertation?


EDIT: ^ I would be very wary of going behind your PI's back. You absolutely need their recommendation when it comes to getting a job.

Happens all of the time...with older professors. My case is still a little unique though based off of the sheer number of things that are not being published, and I don't know why. I think that my prof thought that it was better to plant new fields than harvest the old. I bet all of these will end up being dumped into a low impact journal after I graduate...hopefully.

The advantage of working with older profs though is connections, so that is in my favor.

^ looked down upon in my field, don't know about others. Usually when the PI is left off of the paper is it very fishy smelling, and I would like to avoid that.

I have written them up and they were revised by others in the department. There is really nothing else that I can do.
