looks like they're about to sign Jones to a contract extension. good to see they are going to try to retain their talent now instead of trading anyone decent to the Rangers.

http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/orioles/blog/bal-adam-jones-orioles-in-serious-negotiations-for-longterm-contract-20120525,0,3256523.story

Quote :
"
The Orioles and the representative for center fielder Adam Jones are in serious negotiations for a long-term contract.

According to a source, Jones’ agent, Nez Balelo of CAA, has been in Baltimore for a couple of days and has met with Orioles executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette.

Balelo, Duquette and Jones could not be reached for comment.

The deal is expected to shatter the largest contract handed out in Orioles history, a six-year, $72 million deal for shortstop and former MVP Miguel Tejada before the 2004 season.

The largest contract extension tendered by the club was awarded to current right fielder Nick Markakis, a six-year, $66.1 million deal in 2009.

Duquette has said in the past that he would like to keep Jones long term, but previously did not like to conduct contract negotiations in-season.

Jones, 26, is in the midst of the best season of his seven-year career. He’s second in the AL in home runs (14) and total bases (110), trailing only Josh Hamilton of the Rangers. He’s also third in slugging percentage (.601) and extra-base hits (24) and fourth in hits (57) and OPS (.958).

Jones enters tonight’s game against the Royals with a career-high 15-game hitting streak, the longest active streak in the AL.

Fox Sports first reported the sides were close. It also reported Jones had a physical on Thursday’s off day. Physicals are protocol for the Orioles before agreeing to long-term deals."

there are rumors they might ne after oswalt too. it'd be a pretty low risk signing, but he probably wants to go to a contender seeing as how he's expressed interest in the braves, rangers and cardinals, and the o's don't fit that description unless they manage to catch lightning in a bottle like they have been for the rest of the season. I don't see where texas would have room for him though.

^i find it curious that you only post about the O's when they lose, and seem to find no joy when they win. yes they slumped for a 10 game stretch, but they haven't completely taken the yearly nosedive yet. maybe the team is figuring out how to win, finally.

good to see Brian Roberts back. going 3-4 is nothing to scoff at after missing as much time as he has.

sorry, been busy this week. I only follow the O's in april and may at this point, because everyone knows they peter out come june and july and there's no point in watching them anymore at that point. I'd love to be wrong, but let's face it, I'm probably not.

I saw an absurd amount of orioles hats at bonnaroo last weekend. Either the entire city of baltimore was there or wearing an o's hat is the cool thing to do or something

It's the cartoon bird.

People love the cartoon bird.

I was up there for the Royals game over Memorial Day and picked one up. My old one had seen much better days.

Their offense has been the worst in the AL for more than a month and they don't have the kind of minor league talent it'd take to land a worthwhile pitcher. At least matusz was banished to AAA

2 games over .500, 1.5 away from a tie with the Blue Jays for the cellar of the AL East. yeesh.

maybe they'll make a wild trade. they need hitting and pitching equally right now.

i think my general pessimism honed from years of being a State fan is leaking into my general pessimism from years of being an O's fan. When anything is going well, I just assume it's about to hit the fan somehow

In my formative years the O's were damn good...once they broke the team up, I figured it was only a matter of time before they reloaded and got back on top.

14 years later.......

yeah dude. you're so prescient. you were totally the only o's fan on earth who saw this coming. no one realized that this team was performing at a hugely unsustainable clip for the first 2 months of the season.

or it could just be due to the fact that the team has been horribly mismanaged since angelos bought it in the early 90s, and even the best attempt at returning it to a competent, respectable organization over the last 5 years basically resulted in complete and utter failure. trust me, it's not your pessimism as a state fan.

nice 10-1 loss to the rays today. if i were the guy in charge of sound effects or whatever at camden yards i think i would just run a sound clip of that scene from the wire where burrell says, "this is baltimore, gentlemen. the gods will not save you" over and over for the entire game, never stopping during batter intros or walk up music or the seventh inning stretch or anything. this would continue until the orioles won the world series, which is not likely to happen before the earth dies and the sun collapses in on itself

heard the o's might be looking at getting francisco liriano from the twins. i'd be ok with that if it ends up as horribly one-sided as the jj hardy deal.

they won't be moving Matusz, from what i've read

Joe Blanton is looking more and more likely to be an Oriole

Duquette loves trading with the Phillies

nobody would want matusz anyway. he's a disaster.

actually, if the o's traded him he'd probably end up exceeding the expectations people had of him years ago

damn how awesome would that be if they go through august and september like they did 2 years ago? too bad that would require brian matusz to not be broken

Britton is back, so that's something...plus 2 straight over the Yankees doesn't hurt. it's going to be stressful being an O's fan over the last 20 games or so. seems like they hover around being good enough to contend for a wild card spot, but never accelerate their play to just take one spot for keeps.

they never hover past june though. they could MAYBE get that 2nd wildcard spot if oakland cools down and detroit doesn't go on a tear or something. the fact that i'm even saying that is kinda i guess
