^I thought Tiny Furniture was seriously terrible, but I'm loving this show so far. It's waaaaaay funnier IMO. Tiny Furniture came off as a wannabe Garden State to me, which is just a weird thing to go for. But this show's been great 2 episodes in.

Quote :
"and I couldn't care less about someone's parents cutting them off, so that probably had something to do with it. Maybe I will attempt the 2nd episode to see if it gets better."

You're not supposed to feel bad for her that her parents cut her off, necessarily. That's missing the point pretty badly. It's (in part) an examination of the type of people that live off support from their parents/family. It's not championing living off your parents' money or saying that we should bad for anyone whose parents won't support them their entire life, it is simply a fresh, realistic look at a contemporary issue that's relevant in most of our lives. It's a show that doesn't take sides but just presents the situation as it is. You're not supposed to think Hannah is a saint; hell, you're not even necessarily supposed to root for Hannah.

None of that wouldn't matter if it weren't funny, though. And it is very funny.

I don't get the Garden State comparison at all, but this show is certainly an improvement on Tiny Furniture.

It's weird how this show seems to really be polarizing to most people. There doesn't seem to be much of a middle ground. Personally, I'm still undecided. I definitely can't relate to much that I see, but I don't necessarily have to completely relate to something to enjoy it. Still on the fence as to if I'm going to keep watching, but seeing TWW's standard group of pretentious douchebags ranting about people "not getting it" is really making me want to go towards the not watching it anymore side of the fence.

I didn't say I would let you asshats be the deciding factor. But you simply can't deny that the overwhelming feeling in this thread is that if you want to like this show, it really helps if you're a pretentious dickbag. And if you don't like the show, you're too dumb to get it. Neither of which are true.

The overwhelming feeling I get when reading the iPad thread is that if you want to like this product, it really helps if you're a pretentious dickbag. But I guess when you're pretentious about a product or brand rather than a show that's totally legitimate.

Feel free to show me examples in the iPad thread where people have been made fun of for buying other devices instead of the iPad and made to feel stupid because they "just don't get it".

If you don't like the iPad or this show, I could not possibly care less. But y'all are practically attacking people in here just because they don't like this show. It's great if you like something, that's what this thread is for (much like the iPad thread), but some of you are taking it way too personally when someone disagrees with your opinion.

And really? The I'm a fan of the iPad? That's the best retort you've got?

I haven't attacked anyone for not liking the show, I just pointed out that a certain poster didn't know what she was talking about when she made a baseless and irrelevant comparison. She even admitted as much after the fact. I have no problem with people criticizing the show, it's just that the criticism has to be based on something remotely legitimate not ignorance or a short attention span.

If we're being reductive, "you're pretentious and thus your opinion is irrelevant" isn't any more substantive.

And instead you should have given her an award for being the one millionth person to compare the show to SatC.

We get it. Some of you don't like that comparison. It doesn't make it any less valid. Dunham even said on Conan that if it wasn't for SatC, this show wouldn't exist. Obviously it's not a true spinoff in the strictest sense of the word, but the two shows obviously have more in common than your completely dismissive and superior attitude would suggest.

But hey, I probably "just don't get it".

For the record, I never said your pretentious opinions were irrelevant. Quite the opposite, actually. They actually make me lean towards disagreeing with them on the basis of their pretentiousness. That's pretty relevant, I'd say.

I haven't seen the Dunham interview but based on your account of it she could be referring to any number of things. Girls not existing if not for SatC does not necessarily make them similar shows(ibtWomenInNewYorkHaveSexSometimesClearlyTheSameShow). Scream would not exist if not for, I don't know, Halloween. Not the best example but I'm brainfarting on films that are responses to other films.

She also could be talking about the fact that HBO had such a successful girl show, so maybe doing another felt like a sure thing and therefore they greenlit Girls.

She could also be kissing HBO's ass.

And why would people not be dismissive of someone who declared the show a terrible sex and the city "spinoff" after watching <15 minutes of it? While having never seen Sex and the City anyway? Isn't that itself dismissive?

I don't remember her exact wording, but she basically said that her show (her life even?) is about what happens when girls her age grew up watching SatC and moved to NYC to be able to live that life. In essence she said that this show is her (or her generation's) version of SatC.

The fact that we're even spending 2 seconds debating the fact that the shows should or should not be compared means that it's a relevant comparison. The fact that SatC has been mentioned in just about every article, blog post, or message board comment about the show just obliterates the idea that they're not at least somewhat similar.

I don't think anyone is trying to say they are exactly the same. I know I'm not. But to deny any similarity at all is just outright silly.

I don't mean to deny all similarity. Scream and Halloween are slasher films. SatC and Girls are shows about women in New York City. However, SatC is about glitzy women in search of men while Girls is about girls who have no idea what they want or what to do with their lives.

Girls is not a terrible spinoff of SatC.

Quote :

This only makes me believe stronger that Girls is at least somewhat an anti-SatC.

I don't disagree with that. I guess I just see 'anti-SatC', 'this generation's SatC', and 'spinoff of SatC' as varying degrees of the same idea. Either way, the influence is there, for sure.

comparing the two shows is a lot like when talking heads in the sports media compare black quarterbacks soley on the basis of them both being black

in both instances it's extremely lazy and stupid

just because both shows feature women living in New York doesn't mean that one is remotely like the other

c'mon. of course they're "remotely" like the other if they're set in the same location and follow generally the same premise (following a group of girls in NYC)

Granted, I only watched 10-15 minutes of the episode the other night but I'm not sure what there is to "get" about this show. You either like it or you don't. It's not like there's some deep hidden meaning behind everything.

Aside from 4 girls in NYC show format, let's compare characters.

Hannah (Dunham) & Carrie (SJP) both writers, lead character, Dunham doesn't narrate though
Shoshannah (Mamet) & Charlotte (Davis) both pure, shoshannah with the added virgin effect
Marnie (Williams) & Miranda (Nixon) both seemingly with their shit together, kinda judgy of the other friends
Jessa (kirke) & Samantha (Catrall) the more promiscuous ones in the group

Girls, all fresh out of college & barely scraping by. Seemingly more "real" and relatable.
SatC, were in early thirties (forties for Samantha) and more established in their careers with an upper class lifestyle most only dream of.

That said I am a fan of both shows...writing and filming style is the biggest difference.

don't get me wrong, i didn't like garden state either. i didn't think it was similar plot-wise obviously, i just thought it was similar stylistically with slow-moving, vaguely artsy long takes that serve mostly to highlight the hero/heroine's malaise or depression or whatever. idk, i might be misremembering the style of garden state a bit, i haven't seen it in like 5+ years. i guess i just thought they were similar in the way they stylistically dealt with their main characters' deep-rooted sadness.

also, side note: this thread got super annoying in a hurry.

who wants to actually talk about the show?

one more thing: using "pretentious" as a synonym for "analytical" is the most annoying insult since "hipster" caught fire.

Tony Soprano and Ben Kingsley's Gandhi were both bald and leaders of men...I guess that makes them similar characters.

I know the difference between the two words and wasn't trying to use them as synonyms. You can be analytical without being a douche bag. Well, I mean collectively people can do that. You specifically, I'm not so sure about.
