American, but I've heard that it's essentially a shot for shot identical remake. It's by the same director. I like parts of it, but I didn't like the twist at all. I guess that's what Mr. Haneke wanted. But I thought it was retarded.

I like Haneke otherwise though. and the opening credits to Funny Games are awesome. And Michael Pitt's performance was pretty great.

I can't really speak to that but being a dialogue driven film I'm certain a lot of it depends on who plays peter and paul

both peter and paul in the original absolutely killed it

^ Agreed.

It also explains how the original supersedes the remake even though they are - as you noted - essentially identical in every way.

Also, it's possible that American crowds just don't take to horror that has depth as opposed to the standard slashing / bloodbaths the genre is known for.

interesting, I don't consider Funny Games a horror movie at all really. More of a thriller with a lot punches to the gut.

I use "horror" loosely. It's more psychological / shock.. but not shock in the grotesque way.

It's just good, dammit!

As I said, Paul in the remake is fantastic. I don't really remember Peter.

I like "Horror that has depth" and Funny Games is largely a good movie. I just wasn't a fan of the twist, which was likely intended to piss people off anyway. but I disliked it in a different way.

i don't remember high tension all that much, but i think i remember not hating it. the twist was just a little telegraphed, no? I don't know maybe not.

(15 and 9 year old funny games high tension spoilers alert)

but multiple personality imaginary bad guy (is that what it was?) is a whole different ballgame from the bad guys REWINDING THE MOVIE IN ORDER TO WIN.

end 15 year old spoilers.

that could be it, in the original peter is the most interesting and in my opinion most important character, I'm not sure what twist you mean as I felt it was all pretty telegraphed so I wasnt concerned about a twist as much as the interplay between peter and paul and the interplay between the sadists and the family

I feel like if I had watched the american version first I'd feel the same way as you, but if you had watched the original first you'd feel the same way as me, opinions and such

ah, I didnt check that because I thought it was a spoiler for high tension which I havent seen. I liked it since he'd already broken the 4th wall. The whole idea is that they were presenting that to the viewer and who wants to see the family win?

I think I like Funny Games because its so organic.

It's way deeper than face value.

I probably like Cabin in the Woods better. The problem is - aside from being an homage - Cabin in the Woods literally wouldn't be able to exist without every horror movie (good and [especially] bad) that came before it. So my love for it is quite paradoxical.

Wow, looks like I missed quite a bit of good discussion.

I've seen High Tension and both versions of Funny Games.

I wouldn't say the opening title shot of Cabin in the Woods (Screaming/hardcore music with blood splatter and "THE CABIN IN THE WOODS" after a relatively quiet scene) stole it from Funny Games -- if anything I'd say it was just paying homage to it, just like it does with a ton of other horror/suspense movies. Funny Games was the first thing I thought of when I saw that part.

In terms of original vs. remake of Funny Games, I honestly think that they were just about exactly the same. The only major difference was them speaking English vs. German.

I honestly didn't like High Tension that much. I thought it was kind of generic. I won't go into detail since one of you guys said you hadn't seen it yet, but the ending didn't really make sense if you think about it at all.

I fall onto the whooooaaaaa that's crazy!!! side when discussing High Tension.

Because it really could be explained away from the protagonist's perception of the plot. But I understand and accept the detractors qualms, as well. Doesn't stop me from enjoying the flick

ya, I realized afterward that "stole" was a horrible word choice, it was definitely a nod just like most of CITW is

i enjoyed this, but it wasn't very scary. good dialogue, loved the play on old tropes, enjoyed the cast. but i was expecting more. i guess i should be relieved since i'm not much of a horror movie guy.

i watched it with a date. she loves horror flicks, i do not. we both heard this was "great". so i was expecting to be scared and freaked out throughout. she was expecting to watch me be scared and freaked out. neither really happened. we enjoyed it, but had we known we would have chosen something else for our first horror movie together

Smath74, you should definitely watch it if you like tongue in cheek stuff. Cabin in the Woods is the most stereotypical "cabin in the woods" type of horror movie you can imagine. But it's entirely self-aware.

It's meant to be fun for people who A) like horror movies enough to know all of the stupid stuff that happens in every modern "horror/slasher" movie and will pick up references to well known classic horror movies, B) realize how ridiculous the typical, modern horror movie is most of the time, and C) can tell when something is meant to be taken seriously as opposed to staring straight at the audience and winking and grinning as to say "yeah, we know this is absurd."

They take every horror movie trope you can imagine, and present it in a way that smacks you in the face with how silly it is.

But it's true that a lot of people didn't realize that going in, or perhaps weren't familiar with Joss Whedon (who wrote it) at all.

It's a great movie. But it's not a great horror movie in that it's going to be extremely frightening... but are most "group of friends go off in the woods" type of horror movies actually that frightening?

If you expect some amazing horror movie, you will be disappointed.

Spoken like someone who thinks Saw 16 is horror. The majority of horror movies ever made have an element of humor in their core. People confuse horror with suspense and thrillers or dark psychological thrillers as netflix would say

wtf are you talking about? Where are you coming up with any of that?

Not that it matters, but just to point out how idiotic you're coming off... I actually don't consider the Saw series horror. I did like the first movie for what it was. I saw 2, and maybe 3 and didn't really care for them. And haven't seen any of the others.

But uhh yeah... what?

Edit: NM, i just went back through the thread. You're either trolling or you're an idiot and the movie went entirely over your head.

Disagree. Although a lot of great horror films do have comedic elements in them and pull of a great contrast of humor and horror (An American Werewolf in London ftw), there are plenty of classic scary movies that don't have any humorous elements -- Jaws, The Shining, Alien, The Exorcist -- to name a few.
