But I'm in a seriously low spot right now. I haven't been this depressed in years and the meds don't seem to be helping. I've been switched from Zoloft to Effexor for about 4 months now and I honestly think going back to the zoloft would be better. I dunno. I'm just in such a shit place. It takes everything just to get up in the morning and go to work, forget about taking care of things around the house or being social. I even caught myself tearing up for no reason the other day. Told the shrink and he's trying me on this abilify like shit, but I've only had a days dose in me at this point. Anyone have any experience with abilify when you're already in the gutter?" |

^^ exercise more. socialize more. better yet, pick up a hobby that involves both. read siddhartha and get into buddhism. or taoism. i'm sure you've heard these things before.
here are some good podcasts that might make you feel better:
http://mentalpod.com/ http://duncantrussell.com/
i listen to duncan trussell a lot. i'm not depressed usually, but he and his guests give out a lot of awesome spiritual advice. and he's fucking funny.

From what I've been able to tell from my associations with depressed people, "just exercising or socializing" isn't much of an option as they literally seem to have no drive at all
Easy for an average person to say just go do this or go do that, but going to do something is like a huge deal for them. That's kind of the problem with addressing depression from what I've gathered6/20/2013 1:42:38 AM |

no offense, but comments like like yours are completely useless and only serve to enable their behaviors. what you're saying is partly true, but only in extremely severe cases is it not an option.

yes, but it's better than being severely depressed forever. if you force yourself to do things, those things become easier.6/20/2013 7:40:30 AM |

Is it even possible to score "None" in any of the categories? I can only guess that it scored me slight-moderate on seasonal affective disorder because I answered that Winter was my least favorite season, but of course it has nothing to do with my mood or mental state, I just enjoy outdoor activities.
This is the kind of shit that will give people hypochondria 6/20/2013 10:37:00 AM |

i selected summer as my least favorite because i hate the humid heat of NC...it's probably the only reason i got "very slight" on risk of SAD 6/20/2013 10:39:40 AM |

you don't tell people to exercise b/c you think after long enough they'll feel good b/c they're in better shape. you exercise b/c exercising increases testosterone right now, and you feel the effects very quickly. and testosterone gives you drive to wake up and accomplish things.6/20/2013 12:59:42 PM |

SAD. People in northern areas are more likely to have depression due to lack of sunlight. It could be for an internal study though

^^I guess a few big things. I finished my Masters. I gave up beer/pasta. And I got put on a tiny dose of thyroid medication. Within a few days, I was able to wake up in the morning...after 10+ years of being terrified to sleep because I wasn't sure if I would wake up. It was actually an urgent care guy who caught the thyroid for me--I went in complaining of back and stomach problems, and he observed the other symptoms. My face was pale/puffy, my hair was falling out, my ears were really waxy, I had no reflexes, etc...for the most part, I just thought you were supposed to feel like garbage all the time.

AHA, I know...it's awful. And I consider myself a beer drinker too.
I mean, who am I?!?!?
Of course, I think I may take it up again some day since I don't really know if it's responsible for my improved mood. But I'm definitely not messing with anything for now. I'm basically superstitious about my mood--all present routines must be maintained.
And, in all honesty, Richard Howell was crucial through the winter months. He was my model for perseverance and excellence.

I drink liquor when it's really, really important for me to do so. Friends don't let friends get drunk alone.
And, no, it's not alcoholism. It's whatever you want to call it. I call it "my fucking business." 6/20/2013 5:55:40 PM |

imo socialization is one of the most important things, if not the most important, when it comes to mental health.
meetup.com has lots of groups you could join, depending on where you live
join a climbing gym join a mountain biking club join an adult sports league join a group like this: http://www.hackerspacecharlotte.org/ join a church (doesn't matter if you aren't religious. unitarian universalists accept everyone) volunteer. habitat is good. just sign up for a weekend build day and go from there. i've met people that way.
