^Mind saying a little about why DayZ over Rust? Rust seems like it currently has "more"--I guess? The building aspect is something I'm a sucker for, but DayZ has better atmosphere.

I think the building aspect is why I don't like Rust as much. I just don't care too much about the Minecraft aspects. And the atmosphere, as you said.

To each their own, though.

Is Rust still overrun with duplicators and hacker? At least that's what I'd heard before.

I'm thinking I'll probably get DayZ instead, since I know I'm going to get it no matter what AT SOME POINT.

My girlfriend gifted me a copy of the Standalone.... so I guess we'll see what that's about.

I'm playing DayZ standalone (Alpha) on Steam, and it's a lot of fun.

So is this the kind of game you get sucked into? I'm trying to sell a bunch of random stuff on steam to cut into the $30 cost....I know I should have got it during the sale. Is it boring? All the videos I see look fun but how often do you run into other people and do servers end up being lopsided with the people with weapons basically running everything?

There wasn't a sale on DayZ during the Winter Sale. It's fun and for some people obsessive. I think it's more like that if you have a squad you play with. In the old version (mod) it was very much a thing people threw themselves into. Right now, because of scaled back features, there's no quite as much to obsess over.

You don't run into many people if you actively try not to. It's really easy to stay off the beaten path. You very quickly learn the hot spots--and basically anything "end game" (best military tier loot) will always have people after it. That being said, you can still have really random run-ins with people anywhere on the map.

EDIT: People with numbers, experience, and good loot can definitely dominate unprepared players, and DayZ is definitely a game where you adapt to that, and likely never ever completely overcome it. You won't thrive at the game if you can't lose sometimes--because you will. You will be gunned down and never see it comes. You'll crest a hill and have a sniper bullet in your brain because you carelessly ran into the field thinking you were farther from the military base than you were--etc. It's still a military sim at heart, and people with better eagles eyes than you are always manning a sniper rifle SOMEWHERE.

I've been mixing it up a bit lately with minimal gear and all black camo.

my build:
very dark skin
black beanie
black leather gloves
no sun glasses, no gas mask, etc.
black tactical shirt
black tactical vest / or black uk assault vest
black cargo pants / or grey cargo pants
wellies boots

Since there's not a black backpack in game yet, when I get armed I ditch my back pack and carry just ammo clips and food in the clothing storage I'm allowed.

If using m4 I don't put anything on it except BUIS iron sights. ACOG or red dot is stupid to use in this game unless you're in complete cover or have an overwatch because it takes away the peripheral.

I tried watching about 10 different twitch streams of this game, but they were all people either playing in an inventory menu (for the entire length of my ~5 minute attention span) or people running through very repetitive woods for ~5-10 minutes with no action to speak of. It seems like there is little to nothing to do

there is currently an alpha release of a new standalone game, right? if that is about to be released, I don't want to spend the money on buying ArmAII and getting this mod. If the standalone is about to be released, I would rather wait and purchase that.

Make sense?

finally put some time into last night and today. This game is so addicting. Had one good character that was well equipped but got swarmed by 3 zombies in a house. Sucks that they're so buggy because I ran in the house and closed the doors but they glitched inside

If anybody wants to team up sometime add me on steam.
