I worked at a car wash when I was 15 or 16. Everybody there stole from the cars. You go through the change in the ashtray, center console, etc, and figure no one tallied that shit up, but if you grabbed a dollar an hour, think about that % increase in your wages. I was making $5.25 an hour back then.

One time a customer came through that must have taken toll roads or some shit. This guy had tons of quarters in the ashtray/console. I mean, it seemed like a lot back then, probably like $10, but they obviously needed money in quarters for something. I guess that at each station, people grabbed some (vacuum, car wash, interior wipe down, towel drying) and by the time the dude gets back in his car, there must have been a bunch of money missing. He fucking slammed on his brakes leaving the wash, turned around, and told the manager. We paid him out of the till, and then we got our ears burned about how stupid we were. I'm 31 and I still remember being like "fuck this, not doing that anymore." So I'm sure you have effected some change, just leave it there.

The only thing of value I leave in my car when it's being serviced is my iPod. And I always lock it up in the glove box. Just be smart of this sort of thing in the future.

Have you ever considered learning to change oil yourself? In a way, money is "stolen" from you every time you get your oil changed by a "professional" because they charge way more that what you could do it for yourself. Its really easy btw...

I'd rather pay 15 bucks and have them do it. The supplies to do it myself would cost close to that anyway.

The filter always gets changed. When they want to rip you off or they're really backed up and want to move the cars quickly they'll take off the old filter, put on a new filter, top off the oil, and send you on your way.

I change my own oil, but not to save money. You can't really beat these $15-$20 places in terms of cost. Not by any decent margin at least. It's a job I can knock out in 20 minutes, so I'd rather do it myself than drive to a shop and sit there for twice as long waiting for someone else to do it. Not to mention the possibility of someone stealing from you and dealing with the lying service managers saying your car needs some work that it doesn't actually need. The last time I had my vehicle in the shop they tried to tell me the trans fluid looked terrible and it desperately needed to be changed. I had changed it within 5,000 miles using synthetic fluid. Just to be safe I checked it when I got home and sure enough it looked perfect.

While true, that premium for a "professional" is also a warranty/guarantee on their workmanship/product. They crack your oil pan? Fixed free of charge. You crack your oil pan, have fun!

Sometimes the 5-15% premium is worth it.

In full disclosure, I used to change my own oil (never had any problems though).
