I'm curious if this will work with NOMAD on campus so you can walk around and it will automatically switch the next access point?

because of the way that nomad is set up...yes, it SHOULD, as long as your login token is still valid

If your phone's mac address is registered as your device on NOMAD then it should definitely work.

i'm just curious about the port process...i'm sure it's not complicated, but if i ever do it (and i probably will), i'd want to port my existing number

I may just stick with the new number and cancel my old one, but I've still got an old 252 number and I've been back in Raleigh for several years at this point. From what I've read the port process is pretty simple though.

it was pretty easy. my wife did it with no help from me (and THAT is saying a lot!) (jk )

but yeah it was easy... took maybe 24-48 hours to get everything completely ported, but this was back in the early summer on a different phone.

The echo on wifi calls is pretty annoying. I hope the January OTA update fixes it as promised. Wifi call quality is fair, but no where near crystal clear.

Yes, besides the echo the call quality is fair. The OTA update is supposed to fix the echo issue. I tried making a call while walking across campus this morning and it appears that I was able to connect to the next access point without dropping the call, but without testing it a few more times I can't be sure. As with any WiFi/VoIP call there are a lot of variables.

So my phone had this issue: https://community.republicwireless.com/docs/DOC-1437
I contacted republic and within 24 hours the problem was fixed. other than that, this phone is awesome. it's not the most tech-heavy phone and it doesn't have the best specs, but it works very nicely both on and off the wifi. my wife and I can also now have face to face jetsons-style phone conversations (using this app called "skype"... not sure how popular it is)

but seriously i'm in a wifi zone 85% of the time and the call quality over wifi has been better than the quality on Verizon, and i'm using bandwidth i already pay for

they are a part, but they rent office space in one of the centennial buildings

they'll probably move in with bandwidth when bandwidth takes over the red hat building

that's neat, though, that they're based here

they are offering a new plan... in addition to the 19.99 a month with a 249.99 phone plan they are offering 29.99 a month with a 99 dollar phone. (same phone)

^ yeah...and customers still within their 30-day return period can change their plan and get a $150 refund for the phone...

it works out to be even after 15 months...past that, the $19/$250 plan is a better option

if i decide to keep RW (which is doing better since they reset something on their end), i'm going to switch and perhaps "upgrade" to a better phone when they come out with one

^ i'm 99% sure you can't use a deactivated phone (the result of canceling an account or getting a new phone on the same account)

if they still have an active RW account, though, someone could take it over

i think that's supposed to change once RW is out of beta, but that's the way it is right now

^ theoretically, nothing...i think they reserve the right to drop you, but i haven't read of it happening

i suspect they're rely partly on your conscience to keep you from doing that...the other part of that, though, is that the sprint network sucks donkey balls, so you're likely going to get better service from wifi in many cases

at some point, verizon stopped using the tower nearest my parents (who live in the sticks) and their awesome signal went to crap...they can't even GET GSM service out where they live...RW has been great for them because, while they do get minimal sprint service, connecting to their wireless has made it much better

Should I expect results to be very different for speedtest.net between a laptop and the Defy XT side-by-side connected to the same WiFi (right next to it) and using the same test server? At work I can get about 40-50 Mbps on my laptop, but the best the phone could get was around 6 Mbps down.

Is this a general limitation of the phone or is something else going on?

how many times did you try it? did you use the speetest.net app on the phone, or the website? did you do them at the same time or one right after the other?

i'd suggest trying it again, use the speedtest.net app on the phone and the website on the computer, and don't do them at the same time

theoretically, they should get the same results, but i suppose it's possible that there's a hardware limitation that's keeping you from getting 40-50Mbps...though my wife's phone gets the same 15Mbps results that our computers (and my bionic) get at home

i was poking around on the RW blog and found a post from march that say they're releasing new phones (yes, plural), including at least one with LTE access: https://community.republicwireless.com/blogs/republic/2013/03/01/state-of-the-republic-v-1-issue-25

seems promising

^New phones sometime this year. We don't know what, when (except this year), or how much etc.

Also there is a referal program now. If you click the link below and sign up, we both get a $19 credit.

well, they did say "late summer"...i don't know if they'll hold to that, or not, but still have a better idea of "when"...the what and how much are up in the air, though

I've mentioned it to a few people, but unless they are tech savvy, low volume users, or need to save money fast I don't recommend it. The amount of internal memory on the Defy is terrible. Also there WiFi program will lose WiFi now and then and only a restart will bring it back.

I'm happy with mine and the money we are saving, but it's just not for everyone yet.

^ agreed about the internal memory...i'm using a little over 1GB of the 2GB on my bionic...but the folks who i've recommended RW to have little use for more than 512MB and, so far, have not had cause to worry about the limited space

i've not heard of any of the folks i know who use RW losing wifi and requiring a restart...my wife's phone has been fine after some initial issues (which, i think, were brought on by my rooting it and deleting some apps i didn't think she needed )

Can you make a call on Wifi and the make a flawless switch to the cell tower?

^ yes, it's supposed to work like that...and, in my experience, it works

the biggest problem so far is using it on a network that has multiple APs and requires a login (either an ID and password or an agreement to TOS) that times out

for example, at my work, you have to reaffirm the TOS every 4 hours...also, there are gaps in the wireless coverage it seems like the phone freaks out a bit and drops a call if you move out of range, then back into range, then out again, etc...the handoff works fine when leave the wifi coverage area, but it doesn't handle frequent transitions

the solution is to simply not sign into the wireless network

^ yeah, it does that...i feel like you might hear a tiny hiccup, but it's never been so noticeable as to be annoying (it just sounds like a normal, minimal drop in call quality using a "regular" cell phone)

I'm pretty sure it does not handoff from WiFi to Cell. It just dials the number back over cell.

^ well, huh...i've never had a call drop from what i thought was switching between the two, but that must not have been the case as a brief check of the RW forums indicates that they still haven't implemented a seamless handoff (it does what you said, drops and then redials)

^Maybe you were not connected to WiFi (because it dropped out like I mentioned above) and initiated the call over cell when you left your WiFi area.

^ it's possible, i guess...i (or, rather, my wife) hasn't noticed any wifi drops (and trust me, she'd complain if she had )

i suppose that, if you even just use it one place (like home), it's still $19/month for sprint
