his routine would have been fine during a random 7:30 slot at the convention, but not in prime time, right before the candidate accepts the nomination, and especially not after he was hyped all week as their special/surprise guest
it's all about context
not a great look for a party who has the reputation of being full of rambling old white men to actually have a rambling old white man during one of the most hyped/watched parts of your parties convention
those things are about the general publics perception

^^^Yeah, I just went and looked it up. He said "Yeeee-aaaah!" not "Woooo!" like I remembered.
But I think you're wrong. He was trying to pump up his supporters following his loss, which is pretty standard behavior. What made him "crazy" was that he was raising his voice over supporters that nobody watching at home could hear, and his voice cracked. The media have apologized for the way they played it:

AHA, I somewhat agree.
My point is just that that one moment was treated as a really big deal. So nobody should be surprised the this Clint Eastwood stuff is considered a debacle. 8/31/2012 2:45:09 PM |

I, for one, thought it was hilarious.
And it's like you people have never spent time talking with an old person to get upset about some of it. A little confused, but still telling it like it is, and still a badass in my book. 8/31/2012 2:49:36 PM |

I'm pretty sure he was trolling the GOP and probably doesn't care if it hurt Romney's chances. I'm sure he's no fan of Obama, but he certainly doesn't support a lot of the current "Republican Platform" 8/31/2012 2:57:02 PM |

Eastwood's an odd choice because he does nothing to help them court younger votes and he's pretty clearly not a huge fan of Romney. I don't get the decision at all. 8/31/2012 3:17:21 PM |

Yeah I thought it was fine. I mean it wasn't a polished political speech like Condi but I thought it was refreshing after hearing all the same tired lines over and over.8/31/2012 3:35:59 PM |

Democrats latching onto Eastwood like this is some kind of watershed moment is just another comical reminder of their desperation. 8/31/2012 3:49:21 PM |

I don't think people want to talk about it cause it's so awkward. But it's kind of an unavoidable topic.
But I just realized it's game day.
So screw politics.

uh who's desperate again? it's not like Romney is crushing Obama in the polls or anything. I don't think Democrats are brushing him off and thinking they've got the election on lock, but it's weird that you think Romney is the favorite right now...8/31/2012 11:57:29 PM |

what was so bad about it
It could have been more effective by a huge fucking margin had it been done by someone used to performing in front of live audiences but t he dude is over a thousand years old. give him some slack and if it helps you get over your hate, write the words he said down, then read them yourself. Its a good piece 9/1/2012 6:57:49 PM |

The chair thing was just a weird type of performance art, and Clint is an artist.
I don't hold the chair thing against him.
Everything you said was accurate, but it doesn't reflect poorly on Clint if he's not in lock-step with the GOP, and being out of place with them is mostly a positive thing.
The oddities you point out mainly come from Eastwoods centrist words (he did make statements where he viewed himself as outside of the dem/repub divide, calling for cooperation), not his performance for what it was.
If the democrats use it correctly, his performance could be viewed as a trojan horse almost. As odd as his performance was, it was still to the left of the GOP's platform.
