Philadelphia is awesome. Such an under appreciated city, and it's actually somewhat affordable to live there. 9/20/2012 2:20:52 PM |

Last time I was in Philly I remember there being shitloads of abandoned, burnt out cars all over the place. It was really strange. But that was also over ten years ago so I'd hope they got rid of them by now. 9/20/2012 2:23:30 PM |

It's had a very rapid turnaround from what I understand, but I didn't really become too familiar with the city until the last couple of years. I don't think the word is out quite yet to the rest of the country (and they probably prefer to keep it that way).9/20/2012 2:28:24 PM |

I've been in Alexandria VA for the past two months and I miss Raleigh. It's nice having Korean fried chicken and the Smithsonian stuff nearby, but not enough to justify the cost of housing.
Besides, at the rate Raleigh is growing, the food/culture should only get better in the next 10 years.

LA is terrible. I don't know how anyone would want to live there to be honest. But the Bay Area is amazing. I lived in Walnut Creek (which I believe is where UJustWait lives as well??) and I don't have a bad thing to say about it, save price. No pollution, great weather, balanced politically, 45 mins to the beach, 45 mins to Napa/Sonoma (less to Livermore), 2.5 hours to Tahoe and loads in between to do and see.
I consciously decided to move back to Raleigh though and don't regret it for a minute.9/20/2012 6:00:49 PM |

Ok, so most importantly, where in Cary can you get decent ramen? 9/20/2012 8:39:06 PM |

I'm going to be honest. Part of my decision to move was I couldn't find ramen. :
One place in Durham that has real sushi has it for lunch. Always too far for me to make it.

I have very limited first hand experience, though I can understand the draw to some regions of CA. But never in my wildest dreams could I find a reason to move there, as the state government is financially driving that state right off a cliff (with their foot to the floor).
Sure there are a few things I would change about it here (too fucking hot, shitty public transportation) but I love living in Raleigh. Of course, if cost and proximately to family weren't considerations I'm 100% certain I would not be living here now 9/21/2012 10:45:51 AM |

If things get too bad Apple will just buy the state.
I'm sure they have the cash on hand for all the governmental offices. 9/21/2012 11:55:11 AM |

When I first came to raleigh in 2002 for school, I really liked it. Now i'm ready to leave. The population is growing so damn fast its ridiculous. There are certain areas of raleigh I don't get near in the afternoon or friday-sunday. I realize there are cities with traffic a million times worse, but still.
Not to mention the number of rich, snobby people is getting a little annoying. I have nothing against wealthy people in general, there just seems to be a growing trend that if you don't have money or a great job you're a nobody. 9/21/2012 1:23:47 PM |

that's not my impression of raleigh at all.
so what you're saying is, you don't want to live in a city? raleigh doesn't even have a relatively high polulation. 9/21/2012 1:26:30 PM |
bellrabbit All American 2605 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah, I mean the population isn't actually that bad, it has just been the rate of growth over the last ten years. I'm not complaining, I realize city's are meant to grow and its a good thing. I don't hate raleigh, I just liked the 2002 version much better. 9/21/2012 1:31:07 PM |

Quote : | "Joseph Szabo, the head of the Federal Railroad Administration, visited Raleigh's warehouse district this morning to announce an additional $23.7 million in federal funds that will complete the cost of a a $60 million replacement for Raleigh's outmoded, dinky Amtrak station.
It's not new money. There is $15.1 million that was part of $545 million in federal stimulus (ARRA) money for fast-train improvements, announced in 2010. The $15.1 million was a small part of that big package that was not designated in advance for a particular project. And another $6.7 million that had been marked for track improvements in that same original $545 million package.
This money is added to a $21 million federal grant -- which WAS new money -- that Raleigh and NCDOT won in June. Plus $466,000 announced today, to help with preliminary engineering costs.
So the feds are covering $43.3 million of the $60 million cost to build the first phase of Union Station in the former Dillon Supply Viaduct Building near the corner of West and Martin streets, just a block from the planned Citrix Systems headquarters office. Raleigh has pledged $6 million. Triangle Transit is pitching in the Viaduct building and land, worth $1.4 million.
And the state DOT has pledged to cover the remaining $9 million, something DOT officials forgot to mention when I spoke with them this week." |

Some people like swimming in the ocean without a wet suit. SF is dirty as hell and a pain in the ass to get around some times, particularly if it's cold and windy, which is always. Good luck getting on a MUNI when it's raining. Thank god when I lived there I could afford Uber and road my bike.
I know SF != Nor Cal and I get it for some of the surrounding areas. I really like Nor Cal generally and wouldn't mind living in other parts of SF, but I understand why some people, my wife namely, hate it. 9/21/2012 1:57:34 PM |
